It's possible that until the World Government's corruption/crimes get revealed, Luffy will be seen in the same light as Roger among people that have not met Luffy.
Thats all what the series will end up to be about... Even with all Pirate King, or all the wealth, fame and power, Roger wasnt strong enough to overthrow the world govt... The story is being built up for Luffy to do just that....
It also fits WB's last line very well

We know that Roger killed Squardo's original crew. That does not make him evil, since that was a fight between pirates. But it is a huge distinction towards Luffy who never kills anyone.
Thats something else that's been bugging me... Squardo claims Roger killed all his crew, but it could depend on the scenario too... It could be that Roger just beat them and turn of events led to their death and Squardo feels like Roger is responsible for their death. Although Roger killing people isnt surprising considering that he rated protecting his loved ones above everything else... Garp mentioned that he'd fight even if he were to lose.. Perhaps killing Squardo's crew was the only way to protect his crew.... Or squardo and his crew made fun of someone from his crew (Buggy maybe), and Roger wiped out everyone...

Don't think Roger went there, I think it's more a case of the perception people had of him because they didn't know anything besides him being Pirate and Pirates are written off as evil in general and more so with him being the most notorious.

Places that haven't met with the SHs may have 2 things to contend with when trying to come to an opinion regarded whether he's evil or not. There's the fact he's done so many good things and evidence of it. The Fishmen are taking up the SH Jolly Roger and they will likely comment on how helpful they've been despite being Pirates. Dressrosa and Prodence might also speak complimentary of him too as may Alabasta. They will have to take all this facts into account and determine if these are the doings of an evil individual.

Unlike Roger, there weren't people in high positions of power to speak on his behalf to give the world food for though regarding who Roger was, Luffy has that going for him.
Exactly, and same thing can happen to the Straw Hats. It's not like they've been to every island or know so many people that that the majority would know better than to believe the propaganda against the crew. Plus, it's not like Fishmen Island, Dressrosa, and other places will go around telling people what a good guy Luffy is and what the Straw Hats did for them.

Debatable. What if the World Government threatened to wipe out kingdoms or kill those who spoke up for Roger? We mainly saw Roger be criticized as a horrible person few years after his death, when Ace was about 5-7. Do we know how many people felt about Roger during his lifetime?

Roger was known by few individuals, Luffy is known by Individuals who lead countries and and the populace. As seen in Dressrosa, the people willingly and of their own volition went out to help Luffy escape. No one can change their opinion of him after what he did for them, they're forever greatful.

Even Gan Fall 22 years after Roger's death remembers him as a good person because he met him, those who didn't hate him and therefore can only hate him because they will believe the Propaganda and more so being that he's a Pirate who never did anything to be recognised as heroic nor did they get to know him. For Luffy, it's the total opposite.
But the difference is, we saw what the majority thought of Roger years after his death, whereas with Luffy, it's all in current time. What if hundreds of other people on Skypiea knew Roger was a good person after meeting him? What if Tom and Kokoro weren't the only ones who were on good terms with Roger, but enough time passed that the others who knew Roger either left Water Seven, passed away, or kept quiet in fear for their lives? I mean, the World Government was killing babies and pregnant women who could have been with Roger.

I mean, Luffy likely won't be thought of negatively because he's going to topple the World Government and started on his quest to become the Pirate King at a young age, whereas Roger decided to conquer the ocean few years before he died when he was 40+ years old.
Roger didn't stop the civil war in Skypiea for a reason, there was no Enel putting the country in Jeopardy for the Skypieans and Shandians to fight and subsequently unite in order to defeat him. The only reason Luffy could stop the civil war in Skypiea was because when he went there, the Skypieans and Shandians had a common enemy. If these circumstances weren't present, there's no way for Luffy to have united both tribes together. It's not even that he wanted to, it's more like coincidence that things just turned out this way and this is the case in every arc where he's been able to win the hearts of countless countries. If Roger had all these coincidental circumstances where he could have helped, he'd also have had a huge following as Luffy currently does.
There could have been other ways for Roger to stop the civil war. Hell, he could have stopped it temporarily, but it started again for one reason or another. Again, we don't know how huge Roger's following was when he was alive.

As for Roger not doing anything in Fishman Island, he clearly wasn't a friend of King Neptune and it's only really after the Pirate Age that Fishman Island became riddled with Pirates and that's where Whitebeard stepped in. Prior to Roger's death, it wasn't the age of piracy.

The Sea Kings only remember Roger because he heard their voice and he shouted back implying he could hear them which surprised them, but besides that, he didn't do anything in Fishman Island other than probably read the Poneglyph there.

Roger never had those opportunities to be heroic which would have cleaned up image/reputation, Luffy has that despite being a Pirate.
How do you know he wasn't a friend of Neptune or that he didn't do anything in Fishman Island? Neptune was likely closer to Whitebeard than he was to Roger because of what Whitebeard did for him, as well as having been around longer.

Luffy is already regarded as a hero and seen in a different light as Roger, all that's really needed is for his reputation to grow further. He's already surpassed Roger in that respect. Roger had to set things up the Will of D behind the scenes, Luffy will realise the Will of D in the open for all to see . Luffy has been gaining momentum regarding his reputation from the start of the series:
  1. Defeat Morgan which saved the village and liberated the Marine base.
  2. We have Cocoyashi village whom are indebted to Luffy for taking out Arlong and Nezumi the corrupt Pirate.
  3. There's Drum Kingdom who are indebted to him for Wapol's defeat and the return of their doctors which saved the Country.
  4. Alabasta is another case.
  5. Water 7.
  6. The 1000s of people saved at Thriller Bark.
  7. Fishman Island.
  8. Dressrosa.
  9. Wano soon.
I'm not sure if this is entirely true about Roger. Again, we don't know much about him or opinions of him when he was alive.

It really can't.

Dressrosa even have a statue of Luffy as their Hero and they may very well speak well of him at the Reverie as may the others who are indebted to him. The fact they may need to speak about the Shichibukai system more or less implies they will have to include Luffy being responsible for their countries being saved.

Thanks to Fujitora, the world already knows that it was Luffy that defeated Joker. Fujitora also told the world what Joker did, so it is well known that the SH is the reason Dressrosa was saved. Maynard helped in televising the fact that Joker turned the Country into toys, destroyed it and then was saved by Luffy only for Fujitora to kowtow and confirm all that was said.

Luffy has a resume of achievements and Roger didn't.

But the difference is, we saw what the majority thought of Roger years after his death, whereas with Luffy, it's all in current time. What if hundreds of other people on Skypiea knew Roger was a good person after meeting him? No, Roger was always hated because there was no other impression people could have of him because they didn't know him.

Luffy is in a completely different position.

There could have been other ways for Roger to stop the civil war. Hell, he could have stopped it temporarily, but it started again for one reason or another. Again, we don't know how huge Roger's following was when he was alive.
Not at all. He probably wasn't even aware of it.

There's a reason why Luffy has a reputation, without there being conflict for him to intervene in, there'd be no opportunity for him to become a hero. This fact is why Luffy is considered a hero.

How do you think Joker became King of Dressrosa? It's because he created conflict which the King was blamed for, and that's how he became their king and here. It's the same thing with Luffy, but in this case, the conflict is always there for Luffy, and that allows him to save said country and perform his acts of heroism.

If there's no known or understood conflict to intervene in, there's no way to become a hero.

Roger wasn't even friends with the Shandians, he only knew Gan Fall. He only really knew Gan Fall. Gan Fall heard his name and made comments; The Shandian priest didn't react most likely because he was never acquainted with Roger.

The civil war in Sky Island didn't really climax until the SHs arrived at that very moment which is why the SHs could save them to begin with.

I'm not sure if this is entirely true about Roger. Again, we don't know much about him or opinions of him when he was alive.
We do know enough, he was hated and the fact he'd been to places like Skypiea and did nothing proves he didn't help them because he didn't have that opportunity or know the people there or their history to do so. He only really knew Gan Fall. Gan Fall heard his name and made comments; The Shandian priest didn't react most likely because he was never acquainted with Roger.

Robin read the Poneglyph and stated it had finished its role. The leader of Shandia didn't know this. If Roger knew and had informed them, that could also have potentially ended the Civil War - all he really needed tell them was a few words and he could have potentially ended a 400 year war but he didn't know much about these people.

This was a source of their hostility towards the Skypieans and part reason they continued to fight and hate them. There's also the fact Roger probably didn't even know the History of the Shandians and the reason the bell needed to be rung to end the war. He did find the Bell, he just never rung it because he didn't have the history the SHs did about Norland and Calgara.

Roger wasn't a bad person, he wouldn't have left a country in civil war if he could have helped.

Only reason this scene could have happened was because Luffy defeated Enel which united the Shandians and Skypieans, then Robin was able to read the Poneglypg and relay the message. Without the unity of both tribes, this scene couldn't have happened.

Garp already told us, while he was alive, he was hated; past tense (saw) meaning when he was alive, he was hated. And this is even more justified by the fact he had no acts of heroism to give him the benefit of the doubt. The only Legacy Roger had was finding One Piece, that was it.

@M3J & @Hannibal Psyche : Enel, the catalyst that made Luffy aware of the desperate situation in Skypeia wasn't there for Roger. It's probably why Roger passed through there mostly as an adventurer.

Crows/ravens (apparently the same, didn't know that either) are the supporters of those stories who often bring about good things. So I think that you guys were spot-on saying that mythological crows are the thing to look at. The things we've seen the crows in OP do so far, like transporting news and people and stealing the enemy's swords to protect people fit very well with the things I've seen in the crow myths. Thanks for clearing up that misunderstanding for me! :D
Not sure if someone already said this but crows and ravens are NOT the same thing

I know this may be obvious, or maybe not, but I was thinking about “One Piece” the treasure. I’m willing to bet it’s a large phoneglyph, likely written in common tongue, or possibly some kind of Rosetta Stone style deal, that has the entire history of the “lost century” from the phoneglyphs all together, or in “one piece”.

It actually is but it seems not many realise it, lol.

  1. 4 Road Poneglyphs read to Raftel.
  2. 9 of the Poneglyphs on Raftel are the Real (due to Japanese phonetics, pronounced as Rio) Poneglyphs which is the actual One Piece.
  3. The remnants contain information about Ancient Weapons and a bunch of other pieces of information.
Kaido aimed to get this information without going to Raftel, thus the reason he tried to extract information from Oden who has the information of the 9 Poneglyphs (the One Piece) located at Raftel.

Small potential plot hole. There are many members of Gol Rogers crew still alive that were with him on his trip to Raftel(Buggy, Shanks, Crocus the doc, and Raleigh that I can think of off hand). Now I’m sure more people than the Strawhats are aware of this, and other than Raleigh they aren’t impossible to reach. (Not saying Raleigh can’t be reached, just that it would be seriously difficult to the point of “not worth it”, especially since he’s not talking about Raftel to the general populace.) So that means that they are aware of the void century and the true history. Since there are people out there that are trying to fill in the blanks, like Kaido, wouldn’t it be WAAAAAY easier to just capture one of them and extract that information?

Is it official that Shanks and Buggy were on Raftel?
They were part of the crew but they were just apprentices.

Buggy definitely didn't learn about One Piece, he doesn't know what it is, he thinks it is just treasure in the sense of wealth. More so, if Buggy went to Raftel, he'd know how to find Raftel and we know he doesn't which further implies this. I can't say for sure Shanks knew either, seems more like he got informed after he became a renown Pirate and more so since he met with Rayleigh. Shanks and Buggy probably didn't make the trip to Raftel either. It seems only a handful of the crew were privy to this, the higher ranked members. So, if Kaido were to go for any of the remnant of the crew, it'd be Rayleigh & Crocus for sure and maybe a few others.

No one besides the top-ranks with the Roger Pirates definitely know about the Void Century because they're the only ones who ventured to Raftel, thus the reason Kaido tried to extract the information from Oden. Whitebeard was also someone who was very likely informed by Roger in his last days which is why he's so knowledgeable about what would happen when One Piece is found.

Crocus also lives inside of Laboon iirc, so he wouldn't be easy to find for sure. Oden also didn't inform his vassals about what One Piece was, so I doubt Roger would also have endangered the young ones of the crew with information this sensitive to avoid them being targets.

Ok, so we definitely know that Raleigh and Crocus were there. Other than the fact that they haven’t said anything, there is no reason to believe that Buggy and Shanks weren’t there also. I’m perfectly willing to believe that they don’t know the way to Raftel, it wasn’t their job to know, but I think they were there. Shanks probably hasn’t said anything so as not to make himself a target, and other than Buggy saying he wants to be the pirate king I don’t remember him saying he wanted one piece, though I may be wrong.

there is no reason to believe that Buggy and Shanks weren’t there also.
There is.

Why would Buggy need to look for One Piece if he already knows where it is? It's because he never went to Raftel.

The claim to be Pirate King is more or less the claim to find One Piece, that much is a fact, those 2 things are inseparable and are one & the same thing.

If claiming to be Pirate King isn't the same claim as finding One Piece, then why is it that after Luffy said he'll be Pirate King... Buggy responds with the World's treasures will be his? It's because they're related and finding One Piece is the same as becoming Pirate King.

He said all of the world's treasures will be his. One Piece is the greatest of treasures.

Buggy even attempted to double-cross Roger. He stole the Devil fruit and tried to switch it with a fake so the crew would think it really wasn't a Devil fruit. This was a scheme he pulled in order to sell it because it was worth 100m.

Buggy's motivation is treasures. If he'd been to Raftel, he'd definitely know where it was. He's cunning and would do anything for Pirate, even cheat his comrade.

I’m perfectly willing to believe that they don’t know the way to Raftel,
That's just an excuse. Doesn't have to be their job to know, they would simply know because that is where the One Piece is. The World's greatest treasure.

If they were there, they'd know the way and Buggy would already be Pirate King.

One Piece could be actual treasures and information on the Void Century, the Ancient Kingdom, and everything else. Perhaps the actual treasures are gold and stuff from the Ancient Kingdom that's very valuable, but there's definitely information there. The Ancient Kingdom should get quite a bit of coverage as well, given that citizens of the Kingdom wanted to write their history and the truth of what happened on Poneglyphs.

That is weird, given Krieg was trying to get Zeff's journal so he could navigate through the Grand line, but not even the Yonkou are interested in going after the remnants of Roger's crew. It's weird, at least when it comes to those who aren't Shanks and Rayleigh. Buggy's weak, and I think that's a global knowledge, so there's really no reason for them not to go after him, unless he's good at hiding. Rayleigh definitely hid well, while Shanks acquired power that going after him would be a Pyrrhic victory, most likely. Crocus would be well hidden as well, as mentioned. Perhaps the rest of the crew have hidden so well that for all anyone knows, they could be in plain sight and no one would even know it. Some might have even passed away.

Also likely that Buggy could be under Shanks' protection, whether or not he knows it. Shanks does seem to have good feelings for Buggy, and he cares more about his friends than himself.

Do you think Luffy, Zoro, Carrot, and many more will know how to reach Raftel after they find the OnePiece?
Even Sanji, Usopp, Jinbei or any other smart charatcers you wanna list may not learn how to get there.

And I forgot, Friday's spoilers from now on? like last time :/
you mean without Poneglyphs or assistance?

If so, then I can only see Nami and possibly Robin and Sanji knowing how to get there without assistance. Nami definitely would have to learn or know as she's the navigator.

Yes 9 set of Poneglyphs just like the Road Poneglyphs are 4 sets as shown.

But i mean, One-piece is just the story/knowledge of the dark age explained in 9 poneglyphs?

I think the Ancient Kingdom is One Piece itself. It was always interesting to me that the Ohara Professor was shot before he could get the name of the Ancient Kingdom out. Seemed to me like it's a name the WG's afraid of people knowing and there's nothing the government fears more than One Piece. But on a side note, Raftel must be the mother of all hard-to-find places if nobody's even just accidentally found it in 800+ years.

Oh. Was just conversing and thought you were talking about getting to Raftel. And you apparently were, so we're on the same page?

Portugeese are weird though.

I hope Oda allows Sanji to be redeemed in Wano. Given the strength of Kaidou and his crew, if Big Mom is any basis, there's no reason for anyone to not go all out. Jack alone should be one hell of a force to deal with, especially since he was fighting two groups of minks nonstop for days. Wonder if he'll be Marco's or Zoro's. I'm excited, actually, and I hope Odada delivers.

That's just an excuse. Doesn't have to be their job to know, they would simply know because that is where the One Piece is. The World's greatest treasure.

If they were there, they'd know the way and Buggy would already be Pirate King.
One Piece is possibly not a conventional treasure though. Buggy likely consumed the fruit early during his time with Roger, he already had it at Edd War. Later during Roger's Execution he cries in tears, showing that he was incredibly attached to Roger. So if he knows One Piece he wouldn't sell it out. Buggy not wanting to become Pirate King is also quite likely since if he claims to be the the one after finding Raftel, it puts him at great risk of being killed by the Government or other pirates since he has no strenght to back it up and we know he is afraid of his life. The original Buggy Pirates didn't even make it through all of Paradise before Buggy got captured.

This is also how I interpret Buggy's boast towards Luffy. He knew the actual Pirate King, so some East Blue brat without a ship let alone a proper crew claiming that he wants to become Pirate King was ridiculous, even insulting to him.

We already know what it is.

Roger told the world it's treasure, therefore, that's why they're all going for it. Not everyone cares about history and such. If people cared about history, they'd all be studying Poneglyphs. They're only going because they think it's wealth.

This is why Roger is very intelligent, he called it treasure. Most Pirates think it's just gold and wealth because Roger was rich, but it isn't that, it's the history of the world.

Buggy consumed his DF in the early parts of the Grand Line, in Paradise which is why the crew aren't too sure DFs are a real thing. DFs are rare in paradise, they're not in the New World.

Buggy did say he wants to become Pirate King, thus his response to Luffy being, if you're going to be Pirate King, I'll be Pirate God.

Being Pirate King is about acquiring the World's greatest treasure which is why he says all treasure belongs to him which includes One Piece.

Even though he cried at Roger's death, it doesn't change his motivations. He's seeking to be Pirate King like every other Pirate.

But i mean, One-piece is just the story/knowledge of the dark age explained in 9 poneglyphs?
Well, that's literally what the Manga says.

There are only about 30 and 9 contain the history of the world.

Each Poneglyph is a cube meaning it has 6 faces and there are 9 important ones meaning potentially 54 pages worth of content at the best. If we assume the top and bottom are empty, it means 4 faces meaning 36 pages worth of History. Either way, the One Piece is those 9 Poneglyphs.
