Gang of thugs appear and hold your entire family hostage all holding guns.
They request you draw out $10,000.
Do you withdraw the money hoping they'll be true to their words knowing they may (meaning you can't be 100% certain) take it and still kill your family OR do you just say fuck it, these guys are criminals, no point giving them 10k they're going to run away with after killing my entire family?
Oden may be silly, excessively naive, and he may have made decisions that are questionable, but what he is notis a bad character. Oden is wonderfully written.
He definitely is not as good a character as one makes out to be, and likely not as bad a character as I say he is, given the divide. He still sucks though, and I think a lot of people are making stuff up to make him look better because he's another Luffy. You're a gallon of wrong here.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the adult Momonosuke is like. At least it'll be easier for Sanji to ironically hit him for being a perv.

I can guarantee, anyone who at least loves their family and is a moral human being would do what the hostage taker said even if the odds are unknown and against them.
In a hostage situation, you have to do what the hostage taker says, otherwise, you lose a 100% chance of a good outcome.
If the most notorious murderer held anyone here's family hostage and asked for x-amount of money even if the odds of getting the loved person back was 1/1000, people would do whatever the hostage-taker said assuming they didn't hate their family with a passion and wanted them dead to begin with, or are just straight up psychopaths. When you're doing things for loved ones, you'd risk even a 1% chance.
The irony is the person who doesn't listen to the hostage-taker is actually the biggest idiot because you're more or less making it 99% more certain that the family member gets killed.
Oden is no different to a a person trying to save a loved family member from a hostage-taker. In the case, the hostage is Wano and he loves Wano like he loves his child or family.
When you love someone like your own child, you'll risk 1% to save them even when the odds are completely against you and you're at the mercy of the criminal.
And this is what most people don't understand about Oden, he wasn't being naïve:
Wano was taken hostage.
He loves Wano like he loves his child.
He had to do whatever the hostage-taker demanded he do to get the outcome he want.
And just like Wano was his child, he risked the odds.
Huge difference between being naïve and taking a risk when you're completely at the mercy of the hostage taker. I think people forget that lives are precious because this is a Manga, or simply can't empathise which is pretty frightening to say the least, lol.
The thing with oden and orochi
Trusting them to just up and leave wano when they had no incentive when he had relinquished any chance
It was vivi level naivety but somewhat more disappointing from a very very experienced and well traveled warrior
Oden then really realized it was time to act when his family came under direct threat
Which you know other families were in the same situation

Also, Oden, Toki and the Scabbard are the ones who made the mistake. If he had stayed in Wano a little longer, like Roger remarked then things would be different. Oden even said he noticed something strange was happening to Wano and still went out to sea.
I mean would this have even been an issue if you had:
Oden, Hyougoro, the scabbards and then on top of that you suddenly have the assistance of Roger, Rayleigh and Scooper and the rest of them. So Oden made the error here. And his scabbards asked him not to leave. But Toki forced him them to stay silent. Yet if one of them spoke out then maybe it would be different. Apparently they'd been suffering 5 years plus the year he spent with Roger. So them being silent about it instead of running out Kaido then letting him go on his voyage was the issue.
Makes you even wonder if Toki is secretly an agent who was sent to keep Oden out of Wano and this was all planned somehow. Even if not, the fault is on Oden, Toki and the Scabbards.

Personality-wise he is. I remember having that impression when I was reading the flashback, he reminded me too much of Luffy minus being an idiot who believed the enemy.

IMO all Oden stuff was not well written. The story didn't fit. No one asked for help, no one came to help. The samurai were not that impressive. It could definitely be better

Killer's bounty in 2 years... only went up by 38m... From 162m to 200m. Kid Pirates weren't very successful compared to the SHs. Kid also got most of the credit of the Kid Pirates given that his bounty went from 315 to 470m which is just a 155m increase which compared to 99% of Pirates that aren't the SHs and Blackbeard, it's impressive.
Zoro acquired a 200m bounty increase in just a few months; Sanji acquired a 253m bounty increase.
It is. Kaido was killing people secretly from the castle + Orochi had people inside the castle. They said if Oden continued to fight them, they'd kill the people taken hostage in the castle and the people standing around the castle. That's a hostage situation.
Like I said, huge difference between believing and just obeying them.
When a hostage-taker has your loved one at gun point, if there's nothing you can do, the only thing you can do is obey. Disobeying means death of loved one.
If you can't do anything, you're really going to disobey? when you can't do anything?

At that point, Kaido was the only real link to the outside world. Oden only found out about Roger's death thanks to Orochi, who probably got the paper from Kaido.
As for Oden's inaction, he chose the path that kept his people safe. Even after discovering the hostage situation, Oden did intend to fight, before realizing that Orochi would've literally been fine with taking the whole country down with him since he saw everyone as responsible for his clan's demise. What's the point of fighting if the thing you're fighting for is going to be used as collateral intentionally by the opposition?
So he swallowed his pride to not only save the current hostages, 100 of which would be freed for each dance he did, but to protect the people who were not even kidnapped yet.
He literally kept the peace by doing his dance. And seeing as how Orochi seemingly kept that part of his bargain up, I can see why Oden eventually grew to believe he'd keep the other part up after 5 years.

It baffles me that people don't understand this, people make fun of Oden and call him an idiot or compare him to Luffy, lol.
And just generally, we're told every time Oden danced, 100 people were released from prison weekly for 5 years. 52 weeks in a year, 260 weeks in 5 years. 26,000 captives were released from prison in 5 years. People don't quite register this.
If Oden's dancing is saving lives, of course he'd continue I wouldn't say it's so much that he trusted Orochi, he literally had no choice but to do as they requested.
In this situation, I'd say he was hopeful and desperate. Anyone would be hopeful. Any of us could be held up at gun point by 100 people, and if we had the chance to call the police even if there's a 1% chance of being saved... we'd take that 1% chance. It's not naivety or trust, but hope and desperation.
I don't mind him, but he's not interesting. Just seems like a cheap replacement for Ace, but with no substance and all crying. Even though he only cried in what? two or three panels out of at least ten pages? We didn't need an Ace Jr, tbh
Can't like someone you don't know properly or at all.
Sabo's a character who hasn't had much screen time, so it's difficult to like him unless you like what you've seen of his character and his looks.
People are only beginning to like Ace due to the Ace Novel, the Boichi rendition of the Novel in Manga form and SBS/Vivre Cards where his character is a lot more developed.
I liked Ace ever since his appearance on Alabasta, and I know many people that liked him before Marineford. You can like or dislike someone you don't know properly, especially when first impression is a thing.
