I'll only say that being the official English translation definitely doesn't make it necessarily a good translation. Zolo being the best example of that.
My biggest gripe would not be the romanization changes, I can easily fix these over myself, it would be the full name changes. The german and english ones have some pretty wild ones and I always get the feeling the translators want to add their own touch over someone else's work.

In a series that uses multiple languages for unique names, it is best not to translate them at all, else you break the immersion. Oda at least frequently also uses English, German, Spanish, French...
Only titles should be translated, character names, place names and attack names should be left untouched and any puns be explained by notes.

All of Oda's creation holds kinda deep meaning compared to other works, meaning in regards to meta constructs that then guide you through what this story is actually all about. The Laugh Tale one being the most obvious example as that didn't even work out in Japan, a country used to twist foreign words to suit their script.

I'll give you one worse: in Spain Usopp got called Usuff, and for some reason was given both a middle eastern accent and "backstory", going so far as to say Arabasta "reminds him of home" (despite how we know what his home looked like...).

I can understand translating puns, because most objective readers will just be people looking to laugh at the names or dialogue naturally, without having to read notes, which is supposed to be the proper experience. Speaking from personal experience: when you study to become a translator you're basically taught every note you have to add is a small defeat (that's if you're translating something like a novel or a comicbook, it would be different if translating other forms of text like an academic text, some form of study or anything like that).

I do agree with you, though; I also prefer reading everything tons of notes and trying to understand everything as originally intended by Oda, including the intended names and romanizations, which is why I prefer reading from the Manga Editors most of the time.

I hate Zolo. I never notice the L and R patterns until this year.
I don’t understand that one. His poster literally says Zoro, and that translator at Manga Plus still insists on Zolo

Reminds of that asshole at the anime team who was gloating about auras (tho it seems Toei started cutting on that shit)

I don't know, my first reading experience was pretty much Asterix, which granted has most names adapted in the german translation, but of course the latin phrases are untranslated and the entire comic conists of you reading notes every third page or something.

I think these studies are all very backwards oriented and haven't really adapted to fiction in a globalized world. Most people are two fingertips away from an universal translator and we are naturally exposed, almost flooded thanks to advertisments, with many languages every day.

In a series where only english and fantasy languages exist, okay, translate the english, but in a series were names are drawn from so many languages, they should clearly be distunguished from normal talk. Most people's names in the real world have some kind of meaning, too, but if we'd always translate them, we would talk like fantasy cavemen. I wish tranlators would learn to just base their translation on what they are going to translate, obviously immersion is key for any kind of fantastical setting.

Comics are also a much different medium from books. Obviously, in a book, notes below crunch down the text space above, thus reducing readability, or if you use an appendix, it is a pain in the ass for the readers, too.

But in a comic you have space below every panel, and it is also consumed panel by panel, making information much more comprehensible because units are smaller, while still containing the information of entire paragraphs of text. It's a dramatically underrated medium that goes much more back to what writing originally was, and studies suggest a huge effect on literacy development in children that read comics from an early age onwards. I wish it would be taken much more serious as a medium.

One of the Urkaine government official twitter quoted One Piece. And I don't even remember this quote. I am not sure what kind of strategy is this hmmm. Some anime news source cover it.

I don’t remember Luffy ever saying something like this. Looks more similar to what BB said at Jaya, but somehow got amended

It's not "that translator", it's Viz editorial. In long-running translation projects like this, it's common practice to value consistency over accuracy or convenience. Same reason they always use "king of the pirates" and abstain from "pirate king" even when it makes more grammatical sense to use the latter.

That asshole gloating about the auras was doing that solely to troll, he didn't have personal power over that design decision. Again, that focus on and now away from the ridiculous auras comes from Toei editorial, not the person with the pen. Dude was just sick of getting personally dogpiled.

You can barely see the Rocks Pirates's Jolly Roger in the manga, these could easily be horns

Would it make sense for someone to have the Nika fruit in that ship? Kaido was very surprised by its ability, clearly he never saw it before

Nika fruit hadn't awakened in 800 years so it wouldn't make sense.

Still an interesting similarity.

The imagery itself could have been passed down through the centuries is what I was thinking. I'd like it if Rocks had no idea what the jolly roger meant, but knew it pissed off the WG for some reason so he just adopted it for himself.

But yeah I do agree it's most likely just horns or something. Just a fun piece of break week mania I found floating around the internet.

I think we should revaluate how we split One Piece into sagas to make it more fit into the narrative.

I think Thriller Bark isn't really a saga, as the majority of its core characters reappear in the following Summit War Saga - Moria, Perona, Kuma. Absalom is also revealed to have been involved, while Hogback is hinted at (the prepped Zombies in Marineford), Lola afaik reappears in a concurrent cover story, Little Oars Jr is a follow up to Oars, and most importantly, the whole Blackbeard vs Ace fght that is the intro of the Summit War saga happens before Thriller Bark.

I also don't think that anything we had in the New World so far belonged to a different saga. The fight with BM and the Jinbe and Caribou plotlines kick off in what we have called the "Fishman Island Saga", but most importantly, Kinemon and Momonosuke join in what we call the Dressrosa saga. The kid Hawkins alliance appears in snippets throughout, Drake appears in the Caribou cover story... All in all it culminates in everyone fighting it out in Wano country.

Imho this is the most logical split up of One Piece:

1. East Blue Saga
  1. Romance Dawn Arc
  2. Orange Town Arc
  3. Syrup Village Arc
  4. Baratie Arc
  5. Arlong Park Arc
  6. Loguetown Arc
2. Alabasta Saga
  1. Rivers Mountain Arc
  2. Whiskey Peak Arc
  3. Little Garden Arc
  4. Drum Arc
  5. Alabasta Arc
3. Skypea Saga
  1. Jaya Arc
  2. Skypea Arc
4. Water 7 Saga
  1. Long Ring Long Land Arc
  2. Water 7 Arc I
  3. Sea Train Arc
  4. Enies Lobby Arc
  5. Water 7 Arc II
5. Summit War Saga
  1. Thriller Bark Arc
  2. Sabaody Arc
  3. Amazon Lily Arc
  4. Impel Down Arc
  5. Marineford Arc
  6. Goa Kingdom Arc
----

6. Wano country Saga
  1. Sabaody Arc II
  2. Fishman Island Arc
  3. Punk Hazard Arc
  4. Dressrosa Arc
  5. Zou Arc
  6. Whole Cake Island Arc
  7. Levely Arc
  8. Wano Arc
7. Current Saga
  1. Egghead Arc

I think this makes a lot more sense. One can notice the similar size of segments (well, except Skypea), and also other similarities.

For example, excluding East Blue which is different anyways, all sagas start with a villain or problem completely unrelated to the later main villain or problem:

1. Alabasta Saga with Laboon at the center of Rivers Mountain Arc (Vivi only reveals herself and motivations in Whiskey peak)
2. Skypea Saga with Bellamy and Blackbeard
3. Water 7 Saga with Foxy and his Davy Back Fight
4. Summit War Saga with Gecko Moria
5. Wano country saga with Hody Jones

Have to look a bit more into this, but I really think this is as it is intended to be perceived.

Hopefully it will end those debates about Luffy’s lineage

It won't. Now the discussion is about Dragon being really Garp's son.

It will at least stop the "Luffy came out of an egg".

Well for 2023 let us get some Sanji with Advanced Conqueror's Haki and some being able to surpass 1st Mate Level along with Zoro and some major proper recognition from the One Piece world for his strength.
A new Devil Fruit for one of the original members (apparently Oda kind of debunked my whole no devil fruit for A sniper for example with Van Auger)

-Yamato officially joins and sets sail with the crew
-Hancock joins the official crew
-Bonney joins the official crew (not Grand Fleet)
Preferably mainly Yamato and Hancock joining.

Some new strong enemies that are not joke characters. More Navy forces and World Noble, as new Characters, for the Strawhats to fight that are at least Yonko top Commander Level.

-Some new weapons for the straw hats (even Yamato becoming a sword user and having the second Kitetsu and Zoro mixing his kitetsu with a devil fruit).
The Haki specialists listed by Oda in the Monster Trio (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji), getting unique abilities in their specialty that no one else in One Piece has, that can be used in battle.
(Technically if Oda felt he could without throwing of the time of completing his story, he could really turn Haki into Devil Fruits where there are different types of Haki that are completely unique to users. A more expanded system, unless he already has that planned it would probably take time to create like that)

And I'll leave my wish list at that.
And some good health for Oda as well.

Big Mom, Kaido and BB have had islands that they called their home base (Totto land, Onigashima, Hachinosu).

So, if the SHs had a home base, which island would you want it to be? An island they've already visited? Or one that's yet to come?

Being logical, it would have been Wano, which they just "took" from Kaido.

I mean they’ve basically ‘taken’ every island that they’ve liberated.
Fishman island, dressrossa, alabasta. Why’s wano the ‘logical’ option?
