Rewatching Bakuman, the protagonist within the first episode said that the Japanese population (especially the younger demo) is shrinking. Which meant they probably cannot reach the number one status as a mangaka, while citing Dragon Ball and One Piece as the gold standard.

People had said shonen jump sales decline after Dragon Ball/Slam Dunk ended. I do wonder how strong was the competition when One Piece joined the fray (since I am not particularly known all those old series). But being an assistant to Rurouni Kenshin series. Oda must have seen what the summit is like since that is the series that is top of Shonen Jump post Dragon Ball/Slam Dunk era.

And how quickly did One Piece rise up. One Piece came out in mid 3rd quarter of 1997, and by the 4th quarter of 1997 it reached the number one status, knocking down its mentor series Rurouni Kenshin to number 2. And then basically reign as number one since then. 2005, Naruto barely squeak in the number one status. I split that year in 6 parts. They tied for 1st once, Naruto take the top 3 times, and One Piece 2 times. So it actually pretty close.

Since then, many series had taken the number 2 and number 3 spot. But One Piece is still at the summit of Shonen Jump.

I have been tallied the ranking in my own system to find new series that I have missed in the last decade to read.

Definitely agree that they did the Drums of Liberation justice by making it a full theme song. It's actually very fitting of the cartoon theme that Nika get's his own background song that people can start to hear when he's around just like in classic cartoons.

I absolutely hated episode 1071. They had all the time in the world to make it a memorable episode.. to make Gear 5 have the impact it had in the manga.
What do we get instead?

Just as much aura bullshit as ever, the same literal fucking animation OVER AND OVER of Luffy bouncing on the roof, sound effects that don't line up with the animation AT ALL, and the animation is so choppy and all over the place it's actually much harder to tell what the fuck is going on than it was in the manga. WTF.

Most of my complaints are in the editing and sound mixing, but Kaidou noticing Luffy before getting grabbed sorta flattens the scene's tone in the manga where he's completely taken by surprise. And if I hadn't read the manga, I'd have legit had no idea wtf was going on in the Boro Blast reflection scene. The choreography was so clean and clear in the manga and they just had the camera going completely coked out flying around for no real reason when Luffy was just lifting the ground up.

I do admit I was smiling and laughing like a child most of the time so they definitely got the feel right.

I didn’t like it to much, they went overboard again and made it confusing. Also, Luffy laughing by himself like a maniac for 5 minutes straight while bouncing was cringe.

The animation of Gear 5 was great. The pacing of the episode sucked. Direction was so so.

Someone pointed this out on another forum, but the manga kept Luffy's full form hidden until Kaido himself saw him. Here, they couldn't wait to show him off. I like the build up of the transformation for the most part, but they killed the intrigue.

Also, once again, the anime has an odd habit of misunderstanding abilities for some reason. I don't know why they still insisted on having Luffy blow up his arm to enlarge it. Gear 5 makes it so he has absolute freedom over his body, so he doesn't need to do that.

My biggest complaint is they just suck at padding episodes now. Worse than before. The bouncing animation on the roof was reused, frame for frame, three times. Then we get a long flash back from… the previous episode.

Also, I do have a friend who only watches the anime and he actually had to go read the chapter because he couldn’t really tell what was going on with the bouncing Kaido’s breath back. The zooming in was a bit ridiculous and makes it hard to tell what’s actually going on if you didn’t read the chapter.

I’m happy for those who enjoyed it but the episode didn’t come anywhere close to meeting my expectations. I feel it should have been as high effort as episode 1000.

I'm truly baffled by that choice. Almost everything else can be brushed off as stylistic choices or editing blunders but wtf where was that dope Awakening theme at?!

I have mixed feelings about this. So i think they nailed to some extent the goofy nature of Gear 5, but the pacing is off and they really killed the suspense by showing it before Kaido being manhandled by Luffy

They kept reusing many bouncing scenes which I hated. But I did like the OST used during the scenes when Luffy manhandled Kaido. The Boro Breath counter scene was horrible. You couldn’t even understand the action

I think they also massively screwed the drum of liberations and made it into a fucking orchestra song, while it was very clear in the manga that it is a drum

Overall, they went extra and they just ruined one of the manga’s most iconic scenes.
