Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

• For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
• Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
• Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
• We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

1. Shanks v Mihawk
2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
3. Zoro > Luffy
4. Zoro v Sanji
5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
6. Mihawk's rank within the story
7. Law having CoC currently.
8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

@Pirate Queen already posted the translation. 3 guys are talking in a bar about who the strongest swordsman in the world is and they're debating between Mihawk and Zoro, they consider Vista, Ryuma and Shanks but then conclude that they aren't anything that special (they even outright say Shanks didn't seem that impressive) and the debate is really between Mihawk and Shanks.

The average person in the one piece world considers Zoro stronger and a bigger deal than Shanks. And I'm not surprised, most normal people in the one piece world don't even know who the yonko are. Heck even Nami and Judge's Son didn't know anything about them until Garp told them and those 2 are probably more knowledegable than 90% of the people in the one piece world. The Yonko's fame is restricted to the grand line.

Its not the average person. Its marines who have no idea and are responding based on what they saw. They didn't see Shanks fight so the don't thinks its a big deal. Whereas one saw Zoro cut Pica and another saw Mihawk cut a tsunami. Both look like huge feats but are average feats for anyone Low Top Tier.

And again, this can't be used as fact as it is outside canon

Lord Whis completely took that Zoro story out of context to fit his narrative as usual. Its not about Shanks vs Mihawk because they didn't actually see Shanks use his sword to do anything but block. Whereas Mihawk and Zoro used their swords offensively. Its a great side story about Zoro's renown growing among the marines. Not a power scaling thing at all.

Wano is an isolated country, the Marines or anybody else outside of Wano would have no idea of who Ryuma is.

And why would anyone compare Zoro with the likes of Shanks? As far as the rest of the world is aware, Zoro is just one of the many pirates with a 300 million bounty.

I'm basing its non-canon status on the fact that Oda was not involved in this particular piece of work. Whereas something like the Ace Novel had Oda as a somewhat consultant. The author needed to include Oda so that the work wasn't giving us off the wall information.

I mean if low level marines saw Luffy defeat Crocodile back in the day and compared Luffy to other Shichibukai like Kuma or Hancock we'd all get a pretty good laugh.

Zoro being compared to Shanks and Ryuma could only come from Marines who have no idea what they are talking about lol

Nah, they see Zoro as more than that, but still nowhere near Shanks's level, especially when they barely see Luffy as the fifth emperor. Most of the world likely sees Zoro as a scary underling of the son of Dragon who fought in the Marineford War. I wouldn't be surprised if Zoro's name is more well-known than Mihawk's, who seems to not bother anyone and is a niche type of pirate.

He's been surprising allies for a long time with his own power and often made them think he was the captain or wonder what kind of a man Luffy is to have Zoro under him. I would not be surprised if he and Sanji were just as big of names as Luffy and Jinbei.

In Dressrossa even that 500M Bounty old man was surprised that Garp' grandson has someone like Zoro as his subordinate.
Just like "Dark King" Rayleigh, Beckman, Yassop and Rou, Luffy's top 3 or 4(if someone like Yamato joins) commanders will become infamous and feared on their own name

But it's randos who had just witnessed Zoro cut Pica and yet have never witnessed Shanks being serious, if at all. Of course they're more impressed by Zoro.

I never said he was stronger than Shanks yet. I’m just pointing out that the average person in the one piece world thinks that.

I think its fanfare, since i couldn't find any reference of it elsewhere, correct me if i am wrong. It also says chapter 3: Zoro, which was the title of the 3rd chapter title, pirate hunter Zoro.
if its fan-fare, then its a decent job, but like you said already, at best its non-canon..
