Re: Translating Woe's

Thank you for taking the time to translate that. As I am learning I can go back to that and see how you extrapolated that from the Kanji/Hiragana. Should be fun! :)

I used the first issue of Tenchi I picked up while in Japan 10 years ago. It had Furigana so that I could easily find the Kanji in my dictionary lol.

Re: Translating Woe's

Haha, yeah I still have some old school copies of Sailor Moon I got when I was like 15, which I still read often for practice. It's great. :)

Re: Translating Woe's

One thing I don't understand after looking at the guide posted above is this.

見つける - means discover, come across

According to the guide u-verbs ending in る should be changed to つた。

However, in the example I posted its changed to たわ。

Why is that? It makes learning this so much more complicated lol.

(also as a side question, how can you find look up something like 'discover' above when it has been altered due to the change of the tense? I looked all over the dictionary I had when trying to translate it and could not find it anywhere.)

Thanks in advance for any help, I know I'm asking a ton of questions.

I believe I found the answer to part of my question.

The word discover was dictionary form so る is changed to た。

But that doesn't explain why わ was added. I see tradedaemon said it was to add, I guess it was female emphasis to the sentence?

Just trying to understand it all. Hope I'm not bombarding you guys with to many questions.

Re: Translating Woe's

Yeah, 見つける is a ru-verb so it just changes る to た for past tense.

As for わ , its just a sentence ending, similar to other sentence endings you've probably heard (like よ or ね) that adds emotion. And わ is feminine, don't think I've ever heard it used by a man.

For a dictionary like you explained, one of various dictionaries I use is a program called Wakan (http://wakan.manga.cz/),if you type a verb into it even if its past tense, negative, etc, the first verb it will give you is usually the correct verb (in dictionary form).

Re: Translating Woe's

わ is just a . . . some kind of faminine ending of the sentence (don't really know how to explain it) So, yep, just as tradedaemon said.

And . . . it's kind of hard to explain, but . . . if the polite form (-masu) ended with "-rimasu" (plain form is "-ru") then you have to add the small tsu when changed to either ta-form or te-form. If it's something like mitsukeru, which is when the polite form didn't end with "-rimasu" but plain form ends with "-ru", then you don't need the small tsu.

Sorry, can't type Japanese with this computer, so I just leave it as romaji. :p

First translation done, need som criticism

I've done a translation of Yotsubato! Chapter 22. Motivation behind this choice was purely based on convenience. I happen to own volume 4 of the manga, it was the first chapter of the volume, and it seemed to be something good for a beginner to try.

Now, I started out with writing the japanese side by side with the translation, but found the language switching a bit too much so I stopped around half-way or something. Next time I'll try writing down the entire japanese script before translating and see if that works better. I did however manage to get my hands on a raw: Click here

Re: Translating Woe's

Again thank you both for your help. Emily that link is amazing, I'll be DLing that as part of my program package.

It's fun learning how to read Japanese, frustrating at times but fun. :)

Re: Translating Woe's

It'll always be frustrating until you understand everything.
And that day never comes (lol)

You just make due. In time, you'll get a sense for what things mean even though you can't explain them well...

Hoop Men Chapter 01

Man! long chapter, hope somebody's got energy enough to look this over. I've been experimenting with charactization and such, but I don't know if it worked out that well. This is my second translation, it took quite some time, but I'm quite happy with it.

I think my style of scripting should be generally self-explanatory. *If something is written like this, then its smaller text within a speech bubble*

I'm having a huge trouble with sfx. I'm not a native english speaker so I can't really decide what to translate them into when I understand them, but the bigger problem is that I don't understand more than half of the different ones. There are also som writings of words and slang I can't find in Jishos, which worries me. Any advice would be helpful!

EDIT: Almost forgot! You kind find RAWs of it here on MH: Hoop Men

Thanks for taking your time. It was generally the things I thought were sketchy that were noted upon, so at least I'm going the right direction.

Re: Need help with English-to-Romaji phrases

Thread title is misleading. Romanji isn't the problem. It's more of translating it to Japanese.
Once you have someone to translate it to Japanese you can just simply write out the romanji part of it.

Like the following (romanji - hiragana - katakana)
ga - が - ガ

Also inform the translator to write out the hiragana for the kanji to make it easier for you.

Like fire kanji is 火
the reading of it is 'hi' which is ひ is hiragana.
Obviously combination and usage of the kanji can give you an entirely different reading, which is why I recommend you to ask the translator to write it out all in hiragana.

Recommendations

What are some recommended manga for a beginning translator to practice with? I've attempted several and they have been very difficult at best. Either I can't find the kana (or one that looks close enough to what I see in the book) or the programs I have give me nothing when I que up the words I've transcribed.

So whats a good, easy to translate Manga?

I've attempted Peach Girl, there seems to be a LOT of Katakana and Kanji in that one.

Bamboo Blade doesn't have Furigana which really cripples me right now.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations you give.

Re: Recommendations

Well . . . I don't know if I can give any good suggestion for which manga is the easiest out there to translate, but I would say just start from something you like first, like shounen or shoujo (since usually seinen and josei tend to have no furigana . . . -_-")

Tbh, I've just look through Peach Girl, and I don't think that's hard. You're bound to encounter the similar level of those two in other manga anyway (I mean, just IMO . . . >_<") So, I'd say, if you like that manga, you might as well start from that one.

Sorry if it's not a really good suggestion. Basically, I just want to say that if you want to start translating something, it would be best to do something that you like and possibly learn from it rather than asking for the easiest one you can translate.

Re: Recommendations

Think about trying something that already has a translation available here so you can check your work. It's a great way to learn and pick up common expressions. Peach girl may not be that hard grammatically, but there probably are a lot of slang expressions that don't show up in dictionaries. But whatever you do, have fun with it.

Re: Recommendations

Peach Girl isn't a Manga I'm familiar with honestly. It just caught my eye.

Let me give an example of what I mean by not finding certain kana by using Peach Girl as the example.

Example one: Peach Girl Vol 1. Page 8 - The very first panel, the very first kana.....I could find one with those accent marks in my Hiragana and Katakana list anywhere.

Example two: peach Girl Vol 1. Page 9 - Very top of the page, the words in the quotes. Couldn't find some of those Kana either.

I'm not sure if the style of lettering is just different and it makes them difficult to find or if there Kanji (which I don't believe they are).

The main reason I am attempting to do this.....because I'm not really at a translation level is to learn the Kana. My efforts are paying off because I can recognize some Hiragana by site now and one or two Kanji. I seem to learn better as a Visual, Hand-on learner.

Thanks again for any help. You all have been great in giving me guidance in this area. Many thanks to those who have taken the time to assist.

That one is "za" (katakana)

Look at the Daku-on-Katakana 2nd row first kana. ;)

"Kitsusou" "Namaiki" "Asonderu"

I actually would say . . . you should try to at least be able to recognize all the katakana first before attempting to translate any manga. The easiest manga possible . . . ever, is probably Doraemon (if what I heard about it is true), but I bet that even in that manga, you'll find the katakana anyway . . . >_>" (but again, I never read Doraemon. What I've heard about it is that since it's the manga written for kindergarten - elementary students, it only has some very basic kanji, and all the rest are easy kana words . . . >_<")

Re: Recommendations

I agree with Ju. Before you start translating a manga you should at the very least be able to read the Kana and have a basic vocabulary. But I understand what you try to do, I also learn better while figuring out text - yet, it's very frustating with manga because of the huge amount of symbols to learn.

Let me give you a quick guide to Kana because I had to learn them within three days for my Japanese intensive course. I tell you how I felt the most comfortable to learn them quickly and still intensive enough to keep them in the long round but feel free to jump over everything you feel uncomfortable with:

  • First, go to the free material section at mlcjapanese and download:
    * HIRAGANA and KATAKANA Work Sheets (674 kb)
    * HIRAGANA and KATAKANA Work Sheets - Answers (PDF, 717 kb)
I own several expensive Japanese Learning books and none of them can compete with these worksheets to learn Kana. They're perfect.
  • Additionally, if you want more 'practise by writing the Kana' you can also download the worksheets at Kanji-Step which would be the Hiragana Steps and the Katakana Steps (click on 'practise' to get the printable sheets). I learn best by actually writing them down, so these helped me greatly.
  • Secondly, go to nihongo-dekimasu and download:
    * Japanese Children Books Part 1 and Part 2 (PDF's)
These are short books telling Japanese Folklore for young children entirely written in Hiragana. The stories are very simply with grammar and wording being on kindergarten or early elementary school level and with a little basic vocabulary and a dictionary understandable for beginners.
  • At last, get yourself a free Kana flashcard software. Personally I used Kanatest but I'm a Linux user and I assume that you work with Windows which can't install this freeware. Though, there are plenty of other solutions, e.g. a online Kana trainer such as Real Kana.

That's all. Now simply take the worksheets and start with the first Hiragana line (a, i, u, e, o) by filling out the sheets. Speak the Kana while writing them, it helps the brain.

Then take a little break and use the Kana flashcards. Only select the line you learned and repeat it randomly till you're able to go through it without mistakes.

Now follows the second line (ka, ki, ku, ke, ko). Again use the worksheet and the flashcards but include the first line too during the drill! Again repeat it till you're free of mistakes... and so on. Step by step learn a new line and always keep the previous ones when doing the flashcard drill. Depending on your learning pace, this will take a mere day up till a week. The more slowly you do it and the more often you repeat the better it will stay in your brain but a speedy (one afternoon) is possible too.

Concentrate on the Hiragana first and when you're through with them try reading the children books with the help of an dictionary. You will be surprised how much Hiragana you recognize and - how much not, despite the good drill results. Reading text is very different after all. You don't need to understand much, correctly reading and collecting up some basic vocabulary is the main focus.

After a few days of working with the sheets and the children's books you'll become pretty secure with Hiragana and lots of simple vocabulary will already come along. Then simply repeat the same with Katakana just don't forget about reading Hiragana regularly (it takes a while till it sinks safely into the brain).

You may find Katakana-rich texts online or just try the first manga. Teenage manga such as Naruto often use Katakana for names, sound effects and 'powers' while the normal text is usually Hiragana or Kanji with little Hiragana beside them (Furigana). Since you're already familiar will Hiragana and some vocabulary you'll feel safe soon and won't get tired so much on figuring out stuff.

That's also the point where you should start on reading grammar lessons and look up kanji. The above links (mlcjapanese, kanjistep, nihongo-dekimasu) provide you with all you need. Browse them a little or google for other websites. Learning Japanese has become really popular and naturally plenty of websites popped up. Just find the one that fits your learning habits best.

Re: Recommendations

Thanks Ju-Da-Su, I really only attempting to convert the Kana and Kanji into romonji (?spelling) and If I understand the meaning after that.....well cool. :)

Like I said its really only for practice in learning Hiragana and Katakana.....in recognition skills. I find that by converting them I learn them faster. <shrugs> I'm weird like that lol.

I'll try the one you suggested. Again, thanks for the help. Also, thanks for translating those words for me.....Ill look at them and see where I went wrong with finding the Kana on the list. Ill also book mark the site you linked. The list is pretty good.....I was using Tae Kim's Japanese guide and could not find 'Za' in there at all.

Edit: Sorry Eni didn't see your post before I added this message....let me read yours now.

First of all.....WOW! Thank you all for the wonderful posts. Eni I would like to thank you for those great links as well. I'll take your advice and start studying like you suggested. Its worth a shot and I'm motivated enough that I'll practically do anything I can to learn Japanese in all its forms.

I get a bit gung-ho when I am really excited about something and its easy to try and do to much at one time. Its a big help when you have those around you that will 'ground' you so to speak.

I'll keep you all upto date as I progress.

Just on a side note. Ju......that first word you translated on page 9 for me....I had it translated as Sutsugoo. Man was I way off......thanks for helping. :)

<bows> Domo Arigato Gozaimasu

So far so good. I've learned from a - so.......its interesting to do it they way you suggested Eni. Seems to work pretty well too. :) I'll keep it up and hopefully soon I'll know them well enough to tackle those children's books.
