Oh yeah, another thing about the next rival: any ideas what his specialty could be?
Youzan comes across as a physical golfer, so he's like Tiger Woods. What other types are there for golfers?

I think someone who goes against the standard would be good. A risk taker, or miraculous shot maker. Or someone good at scrambling like Seve Ballesteros. This type of golfer would be different to both Youzan and Robo.

I don't think there's much of a real classification like there is in some other sports, but there could be someone who is great at putting and merely above average otherwise for instance. Maybe someone else is really good at controlling the spin on the ball. Maybe yet another player could be great at reading the wind and be largely unaffected by hazards, so he'd just play the shortest distance to the hole instead of trying to avoid them.

I'm pretty sure there's gonna be two players that are quite close to Youzan and Robo respectively at some point as well. But overall I think we can't just move on the power-control-spectrum the entire series, that would probably not be too interesting.

Pretty soon I'd guess? If we look at Kise in KnB, he first appeared in chapter 6. So I think we'll get two or so chapters of Robo joining the golf club and afterwards the next rival will appear. Here's something to consider though: is one of the rivals going to be in Robo's own club? I don't think Shintarou is one, but the captain doesn't necessarily have to be the strongest player.
Maybe the captain will be most experienced but once Robo joins, I think he's gonnal be the most naturally talented. But again, experience(hard work) between talent if talent doesn't work hard enough, so he's not going to immediately be the best at the club. Maybe there'll be another obstacle there; a student who can do something Robo can't, but I think any other big rival will come from other schools/clubs.

Oh yeah, another thing about the next rival: any ideas what his specialty could be?
Hmmm maybe a really long distance putter, and like you said in your previous post, someone who can read wind direction. Dunno what else but I'll try to think more or maybe it'll be clearer once we meet one more rival.

Very good chapter. Now, we see more new characters but the highlight is Robo wanting to join the golf club, finally!

And that extra chapter was hilarious. XD
It's okay Tadatoshi-senpai that they almost look alike,
your drawings are still one of the best. :D

So Robo wanting to see the outcome of his match with Youzan will be the motivation for his improvement and joining the club. But I think it'll be a long while before he gets to face him again; afterall he has to establish himself before playing in the pro circuit that Youzan is on.

I think in Souta we have Robo and Youzan's future rivals. I actually didn't expect to find a rival at the club that'd be better than Shintarou, but I guess he being the captain is more than just him having the best score card in the club. Souta reminds me a lot of Aomine already; that lazy but exceptionally talented player and we have also a player similar (in design at least) to Midorima; Gen, who seems like the pragmatic one of the group.

Who of the 4 regulars do you think will play Roboto?

The extra chapter was a lot of fun ; seeing the mangaka acknowledge and make fun of the similarities between his works.

Nice chapter. Thank you Tomoya for pushing Robo in the right direction.

That Robo logic could make him a formidable golfer.

I do wonder what will happen after he plays Youzan.

Who of the 4 regulars do you think will play Roboto?
Rion for me, coz he has the worst score and his reaction on the last page.

I think these two points are pretty strongly connected. Specifically I find it noteworthy that Robo's goal is merely to have another match with Youzan regardless of the final result. In other words, this rematch might even mark the end of the series. Of course there are some other possibilities such as Robo getting motivated anew from the rematch, but I kind of like the idea of Youzan being the actual final goal.

I could also imagine that either one of them falls into a slump at some point, e.g. either Robo getting overconfident and needing to be taught a lesson or Youzan losing his tenacity after getting destroyed by a top pro or something. Then the other one could recognize that and demand a match to set the other straight again. But neither of those would count as the rematch both of them want.

I think in Souta we have Robo and Youzan's future rivals.
That's not unlikely. One of the kanji in his name translates to "crow" or "raven" I believe, so he's got the bird theme going on. There's also that he wants Youzan to acknowledge him, which fits with what the reporters said last chapter, as well as him losing to Youzan a while ago.

Souta reminds me a lot of Aomine already; that lazy but exceptionally talented player and we have also a player similar (in design at least) to Midorima; Gen, who seems like the pragmatic one of the group
Not sure I agree with the Aomine comparison. It's true that Souta seems very talented, but he didn't come across as lazy to me as far as golf is concerned and one of Aomine's defining characteristics was his ego which Souta doesn't seem to have either. If anything I got more of a Kiyoshi vibe from him. Gen - Midorima might fit though.

Who of the 4 regulars do you think will play Roboto?
I think it depends on the outcome. I don't see Robo replacing Souta, Shintarou or Gen at this point, so if he ends up winning, I imagine it would have to be against Rion. But if Robo loses and has to work his way up from being a normal member to the regular position, I feel like Gen is the most likely option since he definitely doesn't believe in Robo's abilities right now (although Souta isn't far behind after their rooftop encounter).

Of course there's also a chance they all decline the challenge or something. But either way, I've added a poll for this question.

I think the end of the series would be too long to make readers wait in order for Youzan and Robo to face each other. What I find more likely is the bolded part of your text and thus gaining a new perspective in sports and competitiveness; the desire of facing talented players in order to improve and reach Youzan again. I'd like for this to happen quite early on in the series, as bring out Robo's competitive edge ASAP.

Good point actually; in that if they were to take his challenge and the position of regular was up for grabs, then Rion is the likely replacement since his score card is the worst of the 4. I mentioned Souta because of their previous encounter and him inviting Robo to join them.

It's likely too soon to have Robo be part of the regular 4, so he might play one of the two we mentioned, lose but still remain in the club because of his goal to face Youzan again. I really don't see him facing anyone else because they're 3rd years and captain/co-captain of the club. Plus Gen seems like the douchebag type to reject this proposal because of his position.

I do agree that Youzan's vs Robo is a fitting final stage.

For me personally, I would like Robo to develop a love for the game. Like his father did.

I do agree, it would feel too quick for Robo to become one of the regular 4. He's got so much growth as a golfer, which was emphasised in the chapter by Tomoya, and with Youzan previously.

I guess Robo will let it slip that he played Youzan recently, and wants a rematch, and then only way to achieve that is to become a regular. That alone would get one foot in the door.

Btw dear Guests, you are more than welcome to participate. Don't think I don't see you.

What I find more likely is the bolded part of your text and thus gaining a new perspective in sports and competitiveness; the desire of facing talented players in order to improve and reach Youzan again. Wouldn't "early" be, well, too early? There are two reasons for that in my eyes:
  • Youzan will only accept the match once Robo has become his equal. But if that's supposed to happen early on, Robo's development would be incredibly quick. Not only that, it would somewhat clash with your other prediction that Robo won't make the regular team right here and now.
  • Youzan will only accept the match once Robo has become his equal. In other words, Robo will be at the top of the high school golfing world alongside Youzan at that point which means that, unless the majority of the series is really about Robo as a pro, there isn't really anywhere to go after that since only Youzan would still stand above him.
I also feel the narrative you're looking for would benefit more from the rematch happening later as well. Otherwise Robo's unique perspective will likely turn into regular competitiveness rather quickly whereas him not having that is one of the things that sets him apart.

I guess Robo will let it slip that he played Youzan recently, and wants a rematch, and then only way to achieve that is to become a regular. That alone would get one foot in the door.
That's quite possible. In that case I would expect Souta to take him on over Rion though. I feel if Robo does indeed let that slip before the match itself starts, Souta would want to see what the guy who supposedly beat Youzan has to offer and not just watch from the sidelines.

Btw there are two other things I've been wondering about:
  • On the score chart, it said that someone with a total stroke count between 60 and 70 is considered to be among the "best of the best" and that 55 is the lowest score ever recorded (the record holder is a guy called Rhein Gibson for that matter if anyone's curious). Souta's best is 62, Gen's 66, Shintarou's 68 and Rion's is 70. So what about Youzan? You guys think he broke 60 already or not quite yet? And what do you think Robo's best is gonna be? What if he played against Souta for instance, lost, but got a 69 total or maybe tied Rion at 70?
  • What do you make of Souta balancing the ball on his club like he did on the roof and subsequently sinking it into the basket? I doubt the school's rooftop is as big as an actual driving range, but at the same time Souta seemed to have great accuracy over this shorter distance. Do you think he might be specialize in approach shots?

I'll guess 61 for Youzan. Unless some other factor comes into it, like course difficulty that the regulars best scores come from, Youzan should have a better score than Souta.

Having a great best round can be an anomaly as well, so it's not a great metric for determining who the better player is. For this manga's purpose so far, it's the stat that matters.

Robo will hold the record one day, 50.

That's a good prediction at this stage. Would give a theme to Souta's rivalry with Youzan, power vs finesse.

I wonder what Youzan thinks of Souta? It might only be a rivalry for Souta.

Technically that is true, but it's an easy way to assess a player's overall abilities at a glance. I think that unless stated otherwise, we can safely assume that these guys manage to get near their best pretty much every time. Actually putting it like that, it wouldn't surprise me if one day someone showed up with an even lower score than Youzan (or at least equaling his), but then it turns out he just got insanely lucky one day and isn't actually that strong.

Also, 50 is quite a bit lower than 55 - are you implying that multiple players will break the current record then?

I wonder what Youzan thinks of Souta? It might only be a rivalry for Souta.
Yes, indeed. I think that's partially why it's such a big deal that Youzan publicly declared Robo as his rival when a bunch of other players want to be acknowledged like that as well.

Just Robo. I think with his laserbeam, he has the potential for a stupidly low score. It might only happen when conditions are perfect for his theoretical play, and on that day he'll make several eagles.

That first page looks awesome! Welp, I'm more interested on Robo vs Rion though. Can't wait for the next chapter already.

That was funny. Robo's outfit for example. I like Rion, thought he might be that standard cocky/arrogant type who Robo beats quickly. But this doesn't seem to be the case for now. A 2-on-2 with those jerks should be enough to get Robo into the camp in one months' time.

Nice chapter once again. I wasn't really sure what to expect from Robo's challenge last week, but I quite like where this is going. If you think about it, with this we're pursuing at least four goals:
  • Robo will probably make progress towards becoming a regular by getting a recommendation for the training camp.
  • He will get to show his skills to one of the current regulars without either of them experiencing a set-back.
  • Since they're on the same team, Rion can teach Robo a little while they're playing.
  • We, the readers, will get to see the skills of one of the Eiai regulars.
I also feel that Rion might become Robo's primary rival/contact in the club for now. Although that in turn makes me wonder if Rion will really be the one who ends up getting replaced by Robo in the end. Maybe having Robo go after his spot will make Rion improve too in the next month.

It was a nice chapter.
The captain was right, Robo was thinking about challenging his rival first, and challenging the team to enter that same team was not very appropriate, teamwork comes first, personal challenges, later. Fujimaki always create good captains (Hyuuga, Akashi, Nijimura...). The funniest part was that cosplay, though :XD
Robo has a raw talent, but there are still many things he can learn in team (and as a person). He seems tacless when the subject is comunicaticating with people and it will probably bring him many problems, but from the ending of the chapter the teamwork will probably develop a bit, Rion musn't have any problem in working with the bold Robo.

I do wonder how strong those two guys really are though. Rion made it sound like they're pushovers, and to a certain extent that's probably true, but at the same time I wonder if they couldn't still be a challenge for Rion and Robo, especially if Rion has to educate Robo a bit along the way.

Well, the reason why he did that though is because of what Souta told him on the roof. He only said Robo would have to beat one of them to get the spot (and in fact Souta was even about to accept Robo's challenge after Robo mentioned Youzan), so while you could say Robo was acting inappropriately, with the information he had at the time it was the logical course of action.

Do you think if Robo is good enough to become a regular, they'll expand to 5?

If I had to guess, I'd say they're pushovers and Rion x Robo will win easily. It could work out that these guys are actually decent golfers, but have lost their way. Their behaviour was terrible, and they went against golf etiquette by being loud while someone is teeing off (etiquette is something Rion will educate Robo on).

Fujimaki always create good captains (Hyuuga, Akashi, Nijimura...)
That's good to hear (never read KnB). I like Souta, and want to see more of his rivalry with Youzan. It might just be as Gen said, that Souta wants acknowledgement.
