THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Holy shit I have been saying this for AGES!!!!
Age Seal worked on EVERYONE in the south...that includes Wahl, Neinhart, Jellal and Laxus...
This isn't even a matter of Dimaria....she controls TIME.....regardless of her own strength as a mage, time is something that affects everyone..unless you have a counter to it then Age Seal then it pretty much works on you
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Not exactly Universe level...but definitely large enough to cover Fiore since even the people in the guild who were quite aways from the south had no idea what was happening in Dimaria's fight....I'd peg Age Seal to have AOE as big as Universe One or half of it
i have to disagree that Age Seal works against Laxus and Wahl... main reasons 1.Laxus is above Dimaria in every aspect..and why Dimaria is not the strongest if she can Stop the time in seconds and kill all the spriggans including (August and Irene)??? and how August or irene can defend against Age Seal when Dimaria can use it in seconds?

Hargeon's layout is relevant to Age Seal because there is a clock in town that stops (implied) while Ultear is talking about Age Seal. If we knew where the clock was we'd know if Laxus' battle was Age Sealed. We don't, so it's still a 2 horse race, but knowing the layout means it's possible that the clock can be in the port town, but still closer to DiMaria than Laxus/Wahl.
I would not use clock in that situation to measure that but Kagura (:clingy)
Just like you agree ( :teehee ) and @DiMaria Yesta pointed out if Dimaria stops time here :
Then it reaches also Laxus and Wahl battle because when the battle continues we saw Kagura ( And Erza :whistle) Reacting to it :
Kagura is still on the outside of Hargeon ( Judging from the ground ) and here clock returns if Age Seal reach town then it reaches Kagura position as well so it pretty obvious that she couldn't react for Laxus and Wahl fight while been stopped :true ( meaning they all stops :om ) < If Dimaria stops time in ch. 472 and it looks that way :blush

And I have to disagree here on that.
Let's go just like you said that Laxus is above Dimaria ( i don't wanna start holy war here by discuss it as well :P ) in every aspect but it didn't mean that Dimaria magic wouldn't have an affect on him either way.

We saw weaker mages affecting stronger mages with they magic :
Marin- Erza/Lucy/Jacob
Aria- His Metsu took out Makarov ( drain all his magic or something like that :P )
Meldy-She was able to link herself without problems with stronger mages than her
Freed-During Battle of FT
Evergreen-She petrified Erza during Battle of FT
Bickslow ( he was bellow Rustyrose during Tenrou Arc ) - Despell Rustyrose Magic
Libra- Her magic affects Kagura
Millianna- She makes Natsu/Lucy/Erza unnable to use they magic during ToH
I could find more.. Just because someone is stronger it doesn't mean opponent magic can't affect them.

Kagura is still in the outside of Hargeon ( Judging from the ground ) and here clock returns if Age Seal reach town then it reaches Kagura position as
She could still be on the battlefield and be outside the reach of Age Seal. It really depends on whether or not Kagura is close enough to DiMaria, and the shape of her Age Seal. The clock for example could be closer to DiMaria than Kagura, and Kagura could still be out of town (if Age Seal is the shape of a circle, and Kagura is running South of DiMaria while Wahl is East). We do know for a fact that if Kagura is caught in age Seal, then so is Wahl/Laxus.

If we knew the layout of the town better we'd be able to prove it. I'm not sure how accurate the maps are, and Mashima's cover wasn't consistent with Warren's. The cover shows Wahl is beaten first (and the cover has Wahl as the eastern Spriggan), but it's a cover so doesn't mean much. I still think DiMaria can freeze time on Laxus, though I don't think it happened in ch472.

Oops. I guess I got carried away by MangaPanda's translation :P

I have checked chapter 474's Japanese raws. This is the page in which Warred reported the condition in Hargeon Liberation War.

Warred said "12の反応は一つ減ってる。誰かが倒したのかもしれねえ" or "One of Twelve's signals has disappeared. Someone might have defeated that Twelve, though I don't know exactly what's going on".

This makes me can't estimate Age Seal's AoE. It is pretty ambiguous. Randi has proved my thoughts wrong :)

@Brandish guess who's back :clingy

Okay Hargeon looks like that ( take a look at the forest that is around LS and MH )
Here is second shot of how Hargeon looks like (it's 2 day ) I have marked a place where MH and LS have clashed with Alvarez soldiers it is also a place Dimaria jumps into to strip some girls :emocat
Another shot of where MH and LS clash with Alvarez start of second day ( forest isn't that far away :P ) :

Place Laxus and Wahl took place was further in the city not around the windmill ( my first screen ) cause of big numbers of building surrounded them ( Gray MVP :cookiearf)

Judging for how battlefield has looks like and the clock was stopped as well ( it Localization would help out but it isn't around the windmill as well:P ) and what way from the battlefield Kagura and Erza need to take there no way of them escaping Age seal in the battlefield if it affects something so something in town << Just my opinion ( I go read Laxus vs Wahl maybe on random building I will spot Clock :whistle)

Also, I think that Dimaria shape of Age Seal is a like that ( just on much bigger scale ) :

with this logic Dimaria is strongest because August or Irene doesent have feats to react in seconds against AGE SEAL....

@Vici Here is my new and improved scribble from out PM...

Black Circle = Wahl and Laxus
Yellow Circle = DiMaria/Wendy
Pink Circle = area where the clock could be
Blue Circle = Neinhart
Red Arrow = Erza/Kagura (heading towards Neinhart)

So that is where I think these people are, within the boundaries of the shapes.

Age Seal's AoE certainly covers DiMaria and the clock. But as can be seen, it's possible that Age Seal doesn't seal Wahl or Kagura. Likewise it's possible that Age Seal takes all of Hargeon. I still don't think there's enough evidence for certainty on the subject... though the cover of ch 474 is probably the only other bit of information that needs to be considered (if it is information).

@DiMaria Yesta You said that Dimaria's Age Seal affected all of Hargeon including Laxus, Wahl and Neinhart right? And that she was the one who went down first? Well then, I think I refuted your entire argument with one pic ;) This pic proves Wahl went down first and remember Dimaria stopped 'time' at the same time (heh) when Laxus and Wahl started fighting

EDIT : Oh darn, @Brandish ninja'd me :( Well at least I showed the proof :P

And there will not enough evidence to prove either side right my dear ( let the shipping begins :zomg )
We need to wait for Dimaria second battle then maybe we got more Panels of Dimaria surroundings and that would also provide us with the answer and end a discussion that hasn't ended since Dimaria fight :teehee

with this logic Dimaria is strongest because August or Irene doesent have feats to react in seconds against AGE SEAL....
I follow just the material we have been getting in the story so far and that weaker mage magic was affecting stronger ones without any drawbacks on it effectiveness especially : Millianna and Erza case , Makarov and Freed and lastly Marin and Jacob case.. << all of these mages was tiers bellows they targets yet it didn't stop they magic from working

@Brandish

This panel, I'd assume it is as conspicuous as Wall's shot, yet no panel of someone/some people being shocked was drawn.

What's your thought on this? :)

Let's assume Brandish is watching DiMaria attempt to fight :) And she uses Age Seal against Wendy/Sherria/Carla. Brandish is about 100m away, just on the edge of Age Seal (90m radius for my example).

If DiMaria has the same fight she did in ch 474-76, then all Brandish will see is DiMaria click her teeth (474) and then a moment/second later she will see DiMaria defeated while Wendy goes to help Carla. Brandish will not see the nuke because it's within the seal, she'll never see DiMaria go into Chronos takeover. Just the before and after, like how we saw Kagura's kimono get ripped up.

So the AoE of Age Seal would be bigger than the nuke. But of course if DiMaria freezes all of Hargeon's time then no one would see it.

Invel said in 498 that's he's the purest of ice mages, I take his word for it cause his magic is pretty dope even for something as plain as ice. Just look at what he uses:
  • Ice Magic
  • Ice Slave
  • Snow Magic (the snowstorm he created)
  • Ice Lock
I like how versatile he is with it, able to freeze people's hearts and stuff. He really does remind of Ansem from Kingdom Hearts with all the darkness talk too :D. Pretty good durability too since he endure the ice demon sword attack from Gray. He doesn't base his fighting style off of power like God Serena does, more like tactics and that's dope to me

Going to throw up a theory... please shoot it down :) Anyway I am thinking that the Spriggans all have DARKNESS. Note: When Crunchyroll translations come out I will add to/edit this post.

There's been a question about the magic power of the 12 - how/why are they so strong?

The 12's relative MP level:

  • It seems that Isghal's best wizards were a fair way below the 12. Hyberion, Wolfheim, Warrod and Jura were outlier wizards from Isghal, and together they were still outclassed by 1 Spriggan level mage. This mage was from Isghal (Serena), so Isghal produces one but Alvarez 11?
  • Within Alvarez there seems to be a huge gap between a shield and their subordinates. Marin is probably the best of the subordinates, and he isn't exactly a stud. Why is there such a gap? Isghal doesn't have a gap that is so glaringly large. For example compare Laxus to Erza, or Hyberion to Jura..

What can possibly explain the immense magic power of the 12?

Invel said this in the most recent chapter...

  • Invel says Gray can be a comrade. Edit: CR has it as the potential to become one of us
  • Invel calls darkness a fearsome power
  • Darkness (a quality of the heart) is a seed to black magic
  • The line where Invel references the power to the Emperor is a little weird (I will await the C'roll translation)... but Gray's response to that is "you know you're bad guys". Gray thinks darkness = bad guys, which Invel corrected. But from Gray's reaction he said 'you' as in the 12. This implies that the 12 are also dyed in darkness... which is what Invel is hoping will happen to Gray after he kills Juvia.
  • Edit: CR has this line from Invel as "the root of his majesty's power" (talking about Black magic).
In short..
I believe that the Spriggan's are so powerful because they are black wizards, or they have been taught how to harness the power of darkness. Zeref is the leader of Alvarez. He's the legendary Black wizard. And he assembled the 12 to combat Acnologia.

Possible uses of black magic/darkness in the 12 (just throwing these out there)

We know that Zeref uses black magic. He's able to summon this magic with no real change to his body, though his eyes do change somewhat when he gets angry. If Gray's Black marks are some what related to darkness/black magic, then we see his skin going black. So with these in mind, here are some possible displays of darkness/black magic...

August: Is this him using his darkness?

God Serena: Is darkness used to harness the power of 8 dragon slayer lacrima?

Neinhart: Remember these eyes? (lol)

DiMaria: What is Ultear implying here? That DiMaria did something dark maybe?

Awakening Darkness

Invel said this that Gray's darkness will awaken after he kills Juvia. He also said that his slayer magic is eating at Gray's soul, and that the darkness is on the verge of spilling out. So how did the S12 awaken their darkness?

  • Irene did something terrible in Isghal, or something terrible happened to her
  • Neinhart perhaps a history tied with Irene's/Erza's and it's a deeply emotional one for him
  • God Serena... nah he just wanted more power :)
  • Brandish with her mother being killed, and maybe Zeref told her that Layla killed Grammi.
  • August, Larcade and Invel... I think they were able to awaken darkness on their own under the tutelage of Zeref (ie no emotional trigger)
  • Jacob had a really bad experience with a girl

Darkness as a magic concept

1) In Tartarus arc, Mard Geer said that curses were a new path for magic, fueled by negative emotions. He also said that Gray 'demonised' when he used the Black markings against Momento Mori. Perhaps darkness and curses are a similar form of magic. This is supported by the idea of a heart being dyed in darkness which in turn grants fearsome power... sounds similar to the notion of negative emotions fueling curse power.

2) One of the few times magic (One Magic in particular) was discussed was on Tenrou when Hades was defeated. Precht, someone who was taught the basics of magic by Zeref, said that the true nature of magic is darkness...

Precht might not be right. But his knowledge of magic is almost unrivaled. Adding in Invel's statement (a more new and relevant one I guess), then darkness is likely a path of magic. Similarly, light can be a path too...

So how are FT able to fight them?

Invel said that darkness is in everyone's heart. And we know that through this whole manga, emotions and magic power have a connection. So if darkness can be a fearsome power (as an emotional driver for magic power), then light can be considered another way path of magic. This is probably obvious anyways, when there is dark in a narrative, there is light to balance or oppose it. So the Spriggans have darkness, and FT has light/friendship/PoF (whatever).

This is to a degree supported by Fairy Tail being stronger than most (inb4plot). It's not just FT, but anyone who embraces light/bonds/nakama type stuff. At the GMG, Mavis knew Jellal wasn't a FT member, but could sense his soul was the same as the guild members. So this at least supports the idea that the guild members souls are somewhat special, because they're dyed in light.

It should be noted that FT/good guys have produced wizards of comparable strength to the Spriggan 12. So if light is more or less the same as darkness in the context of magic, then it's quite likely that they yield similar results as a magic power.

Fairy Heart

Also, when Lumen Histoire is first mentioned, we have Ivan calling it the darkness of Fairy Tail. The Mavis calls it light. This points out 2 things... 1) That there is light and darkness in terms of magic, and 2) depending on perspective, one might see it as darkness and the other as light.

In conclusion, the 12 use Black magic or walk the path of darkness, and this is why they're so strong magically. FT and others from Isghal walk the path of light. The simplest way to view it is to look at Zeref and Mavis on design alone.

@Brandish first tell me how time you took to finish this post?Yeah i completely agree with your views. As they devoted themselves to the dark magic they are strong.Choosing Dark side of Force makes you temporarily strong but it will ultimately lead to your defeat. So this Sith lords(Spriggans) are using Dark side for their benefits.Natsu(Anakin Skywalker) turned to dark side and created curses when he was END(Darth Vader).Lucy(Padme Amidala) will clean his darkness and free him.In the same way Mavis will free Zeref and other Spriggans from their darkness.

Honestly, I love this theory. It seems too legit for me :P consider me sold hehe

Also to add to this, Acnologia said to Irene : Considering your magic is directly learned from the Black Wizard, you're fairly impressive - which may indicate something related to this as well.

Good theory fam @Brandish. Not hard to believe that Zeref harnessed his own darkness and embedded in the minds of all the 12s, they all have it manufactured to a certain degree depending on their personality. I have been noticing alot of dark elements with the 12s and their magic, Hiro said in the afterword that they're a reason why there is 12 of them. Invel talking about darkness is deff interesting, I need that crunchy TL though cause stream kinda made the sentences sound weird.

Gray won't get demonized and turn into a actual demon like how dragon slayers turn into dragons after while but Invel is literally talking about the true essence of uses a dark magic like his Ice Devil Slayer Magic. It still consumes your heart, look at Silver for proof. I'm interested when we find out the meaning behind the 12

Reading this theory Zeref truly did make Alvarez to counter Ishgar, FT, and Acno. They just feel opposite from FT and Ishgar in everyway, I would buy this was main reason to it. Zeref said FT's weakness is that don't kill their enemies, while Alvarez is they're overconfident something FT is more humble about

Haha it took a little while finding the chapters, but the post itself didn't take too long. The darkness stuff has been in the manga for a while so it was really only last chapter that I had to think about.

.Choosing Dark side of Force makes you temporarily strong but it will ultimately lead to your defeat.
That's quite interesting, maybe Hiro is a big star wars fan? It could very well turn out like that.

Also to add to this, Acnologia said to Irene : Considering your magic is directly learned from the Black Wizard, you're fairly impressive - which may indicate something related to this as well.
Yes this is true too and I might add this to the post I made. The CR translations isn't much different - Acno basically says that Irene is impressive for someone trained by the black wizard.

Yea I would like to know why there are 12 specifically. I wonder if Hiro abandoned this idea because 3 of them are dead.

CR translations are needed for a few lines. Hopefully it isn't too different.

Gray won't get demonized and turn into a actual demon like how dragon slayers turn into dragons after while but Invel is literally talking about the true essence of uses a dark magic like his Ice Devil Slayer Magic. It still consumes your heart, look at Silver for proof. I'm interested when we find out the meaning behind the 12
The one difference is the antibodies in the dragon slayers preventing dragonification, while Gray doesn't have this. Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if he can simply control the darkness through his own positive emotions. Imo this is where Juvia might play a role, in not letting Gray fall into darkness. Not going to speculate a great deal on that in this thread, might make a post in the Gray thread another day.

@Brandish Excellent post, I am thoroughly impressed by it :)
Although if I may add on to it, I think that if each of them have darkness in them, that might be a reason why Fairy Law isn't an option for Mavis in this war...like, she learned Law from Zeref himself....and once she had learned it she called herself 'Black Wizard Mavis'...
I think that Zeref may have given the Spriggan 12 the immunity against Fairy Law with whatever means he used to teach them their individual magics

@Brandish Considering these whole light and dark side and unlocking dark potential ok we have seen characters like Lyon/Kagura/Jellal/Minerva that could be considered at the dark side (that stars wars Vibes are strong in that one :zomg) but couldn't unlock the full potential of it but nevertheless shouldn't they grow significantly stronger after the change of hearts ( My long-lost theory about Kagura getting power boost after forgiving Jellal throw in trash bin :emocat)

I pretty much agree with most you pointed out cause I have always said myself that Wizard heart and emotion determine how powerful or how restricted magic is on certain person.. << My explanation in some thread that Kagura grow weaker against Erza because of her emotions and everything while she wanted to kill Erza her heart saw Erza as an ally that once saves her life ( Like Freed told : You can't fool magic/heart :P )

The light and Darkness stuff was always in this manga but in current Arc we have reference to that on every step :
-Zeref and Mavis confrontation in GH
-Black and White Sword / Angels
-Alvarez is shown/told as devils/dark while all Fiore is considered as Light
-Sherria ( Light ) mentions that her magic exist to kill malicious/corrupt Gods like Chronos who doesn't love humans
<<< Could find more i think :whistle

Anyway, rest of members are now like that ( I included :P ) :

This convo on the 12s' darkness is interesting to me. Especially after hearing that Zeref trained/taught Irene how to do enchantments, so who is to say he hasn't did the same with some, if not all of the 12s,except August? This arc is centered around Mavis and Zeref, dark and light, so I'm interested in what Zeref and the 12s specific counter to Acno will be when they get FH. I would love a Ginyu Force type of nuke between all 12 of them
