Okay I am seriously considering to buy FF XIV right now.. never been really an MMO person, but I am really tempted by the storyline and equipment and graphic.. the subscription fee isn't that pricey either..

I played it for a little and I'll give it this they've nailed that classic final fantasy class system feel. I didn't keep playing because I'm just not an MMORPG guy but it seemed like a good one to me.

Wow, that is one big and inconsistent setting. First you have what seems like old timey cars being stopped by guys in medieval armors with shotguns and then you see a guy fully clad in armor about to ride what seems like a Lamborghini batmobile. And the main characters seem to be wearing suits and whatnot IIRC. I am not sure if all of this is awesome or the makers simply didn't give a crap. The line gets blurrier with time I guess... Game still seems fun though.

Yeah, the medieval armors in the modern setting seem out of place.

Early story details and more game info are up now. Another game footage has been posted as well:

Final Fantasy VII will not use the Luminous Engine unlike FFXV, which is 65% done.

So it was supposedly 50% done at the beginning of the year right? At two thirds of the way through the year it's up to 65% So at this rate it will be 100% done somewhere in the neighborhood of holiday 2016 - spring 2017.

Wow, I thought FFXV was a little bit closer than that... I guess FFVII remake really is ten years from now. It'd probably be out by the time the next gen consoles are old gen. Or consoles as a whole are obsolete and we only use PCs.

I just need a release date update on XV. It looks great so far. Really liking the direction and art-style.

FF VII is a bit far off, though I do expect updates to come faster come TGS. I really hope they don't throw the same thing in our face. I don't want to buy the same damn thing with improved graphics. No Sir!

Agreed, times change and the game needs some updating. But the question is, how much? There is only so much they can change with the game still being FFVII. On the other hand just changing the graphics clearly is not the only thing they need to do. They have to change stuff but not so much that the game stops being FFVII. They need the game to be FFVII. I mean, if they completely change the story, gameplay and whatever else then they might as well be working on FFXVI....

On that note, I am not sure that innovation is what is needed to keep sales going nowadays. I have lagged a bit over the past few years but it kinda seems like everyone keeps making the same games over and over. I mean, why else would call of duty be so successful? Its basically the same first person shooter over and over again... Very few games seem to truly innovate nowadays. Of course, such a thing would get more complicated over time considering how many games there are now compared to any point in the past. Most of the time it seems like they are simply going for better graphics rather than actual innovative gameplay. Even though graphics as a selling point probably should have stopped being a thing since the PS3 game out. Right now I would argue that the industry's defining aspect is just how conservative it is. Unless call of duty: advanced warfare somehow made the concept of first person shooter into his bitch and redefined it into something new. As far as I can tell, the concept of first person shooter remains largely unbitchified.
The reply is coming out too late, but, it is not like the updates on the game haven't been sketchy, so I guess it's relevant:

I doubt they would completely change the story. The frame work would remain the same. But as I mentioned, they cannot please everyone and FF VII and XV are Japanese gaming industry make and break kinda games considering the home turf. Console gaming is breathing its final breaths there, so, they have to change it and make it accessible to everyone.

Well, I should have been clearer; Single Player games. FF outings are a product of SP (Single Player) experience. With Online or Multiplayer (MP) games like COD, you don't need that much innovation. All you need are online perks. With games like FF or any SP game, there should be at least something new for it to offer. Especially for a game that has been replicated so many times.

Never played a FF game in my lifetime, but I plan to once I get a PS4. FFXV will probably be the first FF I ever get, the graphics and little bit of gameplay look way too good for me not to get a game like this.

I'm not sure whether to hop on the FFXV hype train or not with FFIX being the last final fantasy that I truly loved (FFX was OK, but I didn't like it as much as the ones that came before it, yeah, I know I'm in the minority XD).

I actually was intrigued by the original concept when Nomura was the head of the project, but what's done is done and I won't dwell on that. The game looks promising with the return to exploration/airships...etc and Tabata sounds pretty dedicated and passionate about this game. Right now, I'm more excited about Persona 5 and Land of No Night (Nights of Azure), but I'll wait for the general reception on FFXV before buying it this time.
I'm with you on FFX and beyond.

As for Final Fantasy XV, I'm even more skeptical than you are. I believe it will be a good action game but I'm not at all sure it will be a good RPG. Nomura and Tabata both have kind of the same problem to me. They are action game designers, they really don't have experience with anything else. Nomura has a higher ceiling as the director of Kingdom Hearts, while Tabata's best game is probably Crisis Core(It's a little scary that most of his experience is in mobile games). But Nomura definitely has the lower floor as the director of Advent Children and a few other disastrous projects. So neither name fills me with confidence.

The FFXV demo was qite nice if you ask me. The battle system is really fluent and a lot of fun.
Then again the fighting was also a lot of fun in XIII and XIII-2 while the plot was over the top. Not as bad as XII but still bad.
Doesn't change the fact that Lightning Returns is probably one of my favorite FF games of all times... (120h+...)

Anyway. VII, VIII and IX truly were the best FF games Squaresoft has ever produced... Not that X was bad but the lack of a world map hurt a lot.

All in all I am not sure if XV will be decent as the plot needs to be really good. And I kinda doubt that it will be...

It's probably going to be going to be a fine game. I just doubt it's going to be what I look for in a Final Fantasy game or an RPG.

I like action RPGs. I had a great time with Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition(though Origins is still a better game) but I'm doubtful Square is capable of releasing an action RPG anywhere near that level unless that adapt the elements of what made the Squaresoft era of Final Fantasy games so good. The problem is I've seen nothing to indicate Nomura or Tabata understand how to do that. Even XIII-2 and Lightening Returns were directed by Motomu Toriyama.

Then there is the scary stuff about the writing. It's core story was written by Kazushige Nojima who is an architect behind a lot of the good and bad of the series over the years, more bad the good recently, and the scenario writer(who adapts the story into the game) is Saori Itamuro whose main experience is on the Dissidia games (not exactly renowned for their story). I'm not saying she can't do it but to going from Dissidia 012 to a massive open world RPG is a pretty big jump.

Thanks for crushing my hope then... :XD
If it will be as bad as the whole l'cie stuff which did just sound like they couldn't come up with something decent. The whole lore with gods and demi gods wasn't even bad as a source but the story of Lightning itself was so cringe worthy...

Final Fantasy needs tons of cities which you can explore and some nice weapons I can spend my ingame money on. At this point Tales of games are the better Final Fantasy.

Sorry. Hey, there's always a chance.:amuse

I think they'll get there one day, I really do. I'm just not sure it will be this game. With games like Bravely Default we see that Square does have talented people working for them and sooner or later those people will rise to the top.

In my imaginary dream world Nojima retires, I just don't think he's a good writer anymore, and Nomura should be working on Kingdom Hearts; that's what he's good at. For Final Fantasy I think they should draw on writing talent from outside of the company like they did with Bravely Default. Imagine how interesting a Final Fantasy written by Nisio Isin, Sorachi, or any one of like a hundred other talented Japanese writers could be?

And most importantly Square would do whatever it takes to get Yasumi Matsuno working on Final Fantasy again. A relationship they destroyed when they stupidly inserted Vaan and Penelo into Final Fantasy XII (Basch was the original protagonist).:facepalm
