TGS trailer had a lot of FF XV's mythos references. Really enjoyed it.

Also, saw KG. Infinitely better than AC, that's for sure. 8.5/10 for me.

^that alone killed my faith in the game. XIII gave us a 20 hour tutorial and the worst characters in the series so I guess my expectations shouldn't have been too high to begin with lol. Unless of course the 72 hour boss fight is straight up fake (anything beyond an hour is too much and an hour and a half warrants going liam neeson on the developers) and the whole pushing the car thing was immensely exaggerated. And the tutorial is no more than 8 minutes long.

I wouldn't take his appraisal too seriously. Conan isn't a real videogame reviewer. Which is what makes seeing him react to something as absurd as Final Fantasy so hilarious.:XD

-------------------------------------------------------

As Shadan cited earlier there is a lot of preview coverage for Final Fantasy XV out there now. Most videogame podcasts have had people on discussing at least their impressions of the first 15 hours. And it sounds like it's pretty much what people think it is. For better or worse.

Expansive open world. Arcade-y action combat. Impressive environmental design. Character design that appeals to some and repulses others.

Even this close to release I'm honestly not sure if I'll pick it up or not. I'm leaning not because there is a lot about it that I'm not into. The whole 4 guys on road trip thing just doesn't appeal to me. The combat system doesn't appeal either.

The only thing that could bring me in at this point is word that the story is really really good from a reviewer I trust. Or some unexpected elements. Like if there turns out to be really good love story in there somewhere. Or as the game progresses if Noctis and pals turn into something that appeals to me more. But all indications so far are that it's more or less what it's advertised to be and that's not something I'm interested in.

I am pretty sure that 4 (or more) guys on a road trip is literally every final fantasy game ever. I can tolerate the bad story if the game is fun to be honest. As long as I can skip cutscenes so I don't have to tolerate the story. I haven't really read much about the combat system but I am willing to be open minded about it. I do have to say though, the character's names are objectively stupid.

Not like this.

I mean, supposedly there is no fast travel(at least early on) and for the first while you can't drive the car. Which is intentional. They want you to feel like your on a road trip. Just four dudes wearing a whole lot of black leather sitting in the car looking out the window and chatting it up while you are driven to where your going. Then you have to rest and eat to level up and avoid status aliments(Hunger/Fatigue). So they are going for a lot of immersion elements relating to the road trip thing. That's something I don't think any other game has done but whether that's a good or bad thing is yet to be determined.

The combat system, as the previews tell it, is basically about about weapon switching and teleporting. And plays somewhere between Kingdom Hearts and DMC. With a few elements like combo attacks with party members and consumables thrown in there. Magic has also been reduced to a kind of consumable with a kind of crafting element to it. Nobody that I heard talking about it had any concreate conclusions on that stuff yet but it doesn't really sound like my cup of tea.

I guess the road trip could conceivably work. If the dialogue is top notch and the characters are not assholes. However if we consider FFXIII we'd need hell to unfreeze for that to be the case (2016 convinced me hell is currently frozen). On the other hand if you have poor dialogue and on top of that a herd worth of leader then you might as well end every single sentence in that thing with #nohomo (or #allofthehomo, I don't know their deal). I wouldn't mind a kingdom hearts type of combat but the teleporting sounds weird.....

Yeah, I don't know.

I hope it's good for the sake of everybody whose been wanting this game. At the very least it's got to be better than Final Fantasy XIII narrative wise. That is a hurdle so low it's buried underneath the ground. Not clearing that would require a shovel and a strong sense of determination.

----------------------------

The problem it's going to run into no matter how good or bad it may be though is that Square gave it a brutal release date. In the United States we've got Black Friday on the 25th, Cyber Monday on the 28th, and Final Fantasy XV is going to release on Tuesday the 29th. So basically every video game platform is going to be having their biggest sales of the year the weekend before the game releases.

Retailers, Steam, PSN, Xbox Live, Origin, Uplay. They are all going to be having huge sales.

That's the weekend where people pick up Mass Effect Trilogy and most of the other huge collections for $10, games like Doom and Dragon Age Inquisition GOTY for like $5-15, and god only knows what on steam. So that is not the week you want to release a new $60 video game IMO. Dedicated fans are going to get it no matter when it comes out and those who have a preorder are locked in. But your average US gamer that might be on the fence has very little disposable income left on that Tuesday and have the next month or two of their gaming lives already spoken for.

I'm sure Square didn't have a choice because this is the end of the last fiscal quarter. So this is probably as late as they could get it and still have it's sales count toward this fiscal year but it still sucks for them.

It's the same thing that they did to Just Cause 3, which released on December 1st that very same Tuesday, and it killed that game in the US. Naturally Final Fantasy XV will do miles better than it did because it's a much bigger game with more dedicated fans but it's still going be rough.

Final Fantasy XV Teases An “Astral-nomic” Surprise In Hollywood For The Game’s Launch

At this point, I'm more amazed by all the publicity this game is getting rather than what I've seen of the game itself. I too would've been excited if it weren't for my bad history with S-E that makes me very skeptical and hesitant to get it.
I find it really interesting just as a curiosity more than an actual game. Like I have no real desire to play the game but I'm very interested in how the game turns out.

We should know pretty soon because I'm reading that a bunch of South American retailers broke street date. So the full game is out there in the wild now.

It's also being reported that, despite what Tabata said suggesting the delay was to avoid a day one patch, there is a huge day one patch that weighs in a 7.2gb. So that was load of crap.

Final Fantasy XV reviews embargo will lift on November 28 at 7 AM PT/ 10 AM ET:

Yeah, that's when the review outlets that got early copies directly from square enix are going to release their reviews. Kotaku, IGN, Gamespot. Those guys.

But anybody who may have gotten a copy express mailed from South America don't need to obey any embargo.

A lot of info about FFXV has showed up on places like Neogaf now. I was reading through a bit of it. Highlights seem to be.

Consensus Pros
- Environmental design is great.(the dungeons in particular)
- Soundtrack is really good.
- The characters are well liked.

Consensus Cons
- The car sucks.
- Camera is an issue, especially in tight areas.
- Side quests are mostly of the "MMO fetch quest" or "kill _ number of _ monster" variety.

Facts & Impressions
- With minimal playing around with side quests the game is about 25 hours long. Completionist playthrough is somewhere around 35-40.
- There are only 2 major towns in the game(Lestallum and Altissia).
- There are 2 difficulty modes easy and normal.
- It starts pretty quickly. Lets you do the open world thing for about the first half of the game then changes drastically in that it drops the open world feel in favor of something more linear and narrative focused.
- Initial opinions on the combat system are divided but I'd say more positive than negative. The positive side are saying that when things are going well it looks and feels good. The negative side are saying that it's too simplified and the extra elements are too clunky. Specifically the magic and summons.
- Initial opinions on the story are... complicated. There are a lot of differing opinions on it but I'd say the most common seemed to be that the fundamental story is fine but the way it is told is not; and there isn't as much to it as people were expecting there to be.

Guess we aren't going to really have a firm idea of what to expect from the story and gameplay until the professional reviews come out on Monday. Since opinions are kind of all over the place on both of those. Overall, people seem happy with it though even if they found some areas of it disappointing.

Professional reviews won't give you an idea of the story either. It's not like they have a background in literary criticism. Their opinions always appear to be worthless to me.

First review is out. Not a big reviewing site, but it's a review nonetheless.

Score: 8/10

Pros:
  • Great combat
  • Strong characters
  • Flexible progression
Cons:
  • Vague story
  • Unremarkable music
I am not going to take the argument on the story seriously, but the rest of the review was solid.

I was only referring to their criticisms having merit. The general information they provide does have a lot of value.

I find reviews useful for deciding out whether a game is worth taking a closer look it. So I give some merit to both the criticisms and the information. What I've always found though is that what really matters are finding reviewers with similar tastes to mine.

Like for me IGN's Vince Ingenito carries a lot of weight. I respect his opinion on games a great deal but some of their other reviewers not nearly as much. Same applies to youtubers and such. Like Angry Joe and Colin Moriarty are two critics whose opinions I personally always want to hear.

Stuff like the Metacritic score is interesting too but only as a curiosity.

---------------------

That review itself sounds fairly close to what I was reading on Neogaff, the review was maybe a little more positive in some ways. The music criticism is new, but the rest I've heard people talk about.

That's one of the reasons I want to hear somebody like Vince Ingenito break down stuff like the plot. I mean, the things I've heard about the story on Neogaff aren't great. But they aren't simple either. They are kind of unusual issues, so I'm very curious what someone with a lot of experience reviewing RPG stoylines has to say about it.

The REVIEWS are rolling in. I will just keep on editing this post to inform those interested in reading more opinions. The Embargo has lifted, hence, expect more reviews in the coming hours.

Gaffers run on outrage agenda and what not. They have no background in analyzing the plot or literary criticism. All I have read from there are stupendously idiotic phrases like "hot mess." If that doesn't raise red flags about their credibility in offering criticism, then I don't know what does. Their opinions are as pointless as anyone else's. In fact, I put them below YouTubers in the dreaded internet tier of "where opinions matter." It's always better to form one's own opinion by gleaning information from various sources. Putting that much faith in Gaffers of all the people isn't the way to approach this.

Playing games or JRPGs doesn't make people an expert in analyzing stories. Both of these things are not even remotely analogous to one another. It's best that you should play this yourself. Unless you have inhibitions about buying this, then that is another story.

Verdict (no score):
Certainly as an opener, Final Fantasy XV is ticking all the right buttons, boasting production values that put many other AAA releases to shame, while being unafraid to break from the restrictions that JRPG convention dictates. Of course, that’s a double-edged sword, and long-time fans of the series may feel that this is a step too far away from the well-loved turn-based combat that is Final Fantasy for many. Personally, this is a world crying out to be explored, and one that brings the series phenomenal CG cutscenes and fantastical gameplay closer than ever before.

Verdict (no score so far):
This troubled history is one of the reasons Final Fantasy 15 is so difficult to pin down. For a series universally known and loved for its emphasis on storytelling, can I recommend a Final Fantasy game despite its unsatisfying story? Instinctively I'd say no, but even as someone who prized the narratives of previous games I still found myself going back to 15's early stages to seek out new challenges after I'd concluded the main campaign.

And it's clear that Final Fantasy 15 benefits from a vision, one that emboldened its developers to try new things and reinvent a series while reclaiming the scale that its most ardent fans are used to. In chasing that scale the bigger picture can sometimes get a little obscured, but importantly Final Fantasy 15 retains that love of smaller stories, the ones that often prove to be so much more memorable.

http://thisgengaming.com/2016/11/28...-experience-for-a-first-time-player-xbox-one/ : Important reminder - this one was released outside the Embargo and doesn't factor in the patch for Xbox. Take the performance issues with a grain of salt, then, as the PS4 update was released early.

The consensus seems to be about an 8.5.

Vince Ingeneto was the one who reviewed it for IGN
http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/11/28/final-fantasy-xv-review

He settled on an 8.2 and basically saying that it's a game with a strengths in it's character dynamics, well realized world, and visual style. Weaknesses in it's poor story and thin combat.

The REVIEWS are rolling in. I will just keep on editing this post to inform those interested in reading more opinions. The Embargo has lifted, hence, expect more reviews in the coming hours.

They are people with game impressions. Obviously you take them with grains of salt but frankly anyone is entitled to their opinion and a lot can be learned from listening to peoples opinions. What makes a reviewer special is that they are able to explain their opinion better.

I mean, what I'm hearing from these reviews is still about the same thing as what I was hearing from Neogaffers days ago. It's just that professional reviews are better at explaining it.

As for me buying it. I'm not going to. The experience it's offering with those character and that combat doesn't really interest me. It's just not my kind of Final Fantasy game.

One of the reasons I was looking at reviews was to see if there was some hidden dimension to it that might change my mind. Like a really story or something like that. Doesn't sound like there is though.
