The consensus seems to be about an 8.5.

Vince Ingeneto was the one who reviewed it for IGN
http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/11/28/final-fantasy-xv-review

He settled on an 8.2 and basically saying that it's a game with a strengths in it's character dynamics, well realized world, and visual style. Weaknesses in it's poor story and thin combat.

They are people with game impressions. Obviously you take them with grains of salt but frankly anyone is entitled to their opinion and a lot can be learned from listening to peoples opinions. What makes a reviewer special is that they are able to explain their opinion better.

I mean, what I'm hearing from these reviews is still about the same thing as what I was hearing from Neogaffers days ago. It's just that professional reviews are better at explaining it.

As for me buying it. I'm not going to. The experience it's offering with those character and that combat doesn't really interest me. It's just not my kind of Final Fantasy game.

One of the reasons I was looking at reviews was to see if there was some hidden dimension to it that might change my mind. Like a really story or something like that. Doesn't sound like there is though.
Gaffers were berating and nitpicking every single thing about this game from the get-go. It doesn't come as a surprise that they won't think too highly of the game. The consensus should be around 8.8 as the 9 scores are above 12 now.

You seem to like TB combat more. So, yes, I do not think this was aimed at you.

That doesn't really reflect what I read. What I read was a lot of people loving the game but not loving the story. Naturally mixed in were some people hating on it and some fanboying it up. Most seemed to be genuinely wanting to share their experience though.

I was just using the meta critic average which is now up to 8.6. Was 8.5 before. Not that that means much of anything.

Yeah, I do. Though I like action games too, this specific type of gameplay doesn't appeal to me.

Though the greater problem for me was always the characters. It sounds like this game does a great job of doing is letting you get to know the main four dudes and really capitalizes on those relationships. Problem for me is... I don't really want to do that.

I have been following Gaf for a while, and yes, their absurd vitriol for this game was something else.

Get it when the price goes down. If not, then it's your choice at the end of the day. Personally, I have never been a fan of FF games, hence, this is a step in the right direction for me.

Does anyone have the game yet? My brother got it since Saturday though he hasn't started playing yet due to 1) being sick, 2) the game's getting updated, and 3) he can't get the DLC codes to work yet (we think it's because the game hasn't officially been released yet).

I can forgive a poorly told narrative if the characters are well-developed and charming and the setting is immersive. For example, Skies of Arcadia had a simplistic story, but the characters and the world is what makes me come back to it. Based on the reviews that I read, what worries me the most is the combat and the side quests. I think I'll play the Last Guardian first and then I'll see whether I want to get this. Persona 5 also won't come out until April (interestingly enough, around the time Magi is ending)
The combat has been almost unanimously praised ...

Metro's review is out. It's a tabloid news outlet. Not sure if it should be taken seriously. But still, a review is a review. I will keep updating my post as reviews keep rolling in.

Square Enix has posted a roadmap of future updates planned for FFXV.

Having an avatar system would be fun. I would spend a lot of time designing a character though :XD

Some interesting stuff in there.

Got to hand to to Square Enix they are being really proactive in trying to support the game. I still have no intention of actually playing XV but all the stuff they mentioned sounds like positive(and kind of ambitious).

That being said, the only bit the moves the needle for me is the long term goal of...

"We will make important characters that appear in the main story of the game available to use as playable characters."

It's probably unrealistic to think they could come up with more full featured companion characters at this stage. But, if they could do it, and get some characters in there that would appeal to me more. The odds of this being the first main line Final Fantasy game I don't buy would fall significantly(I'm not counting sequals).

Maybe some DLC clothing options that would allow me change the other characters style too. That seems like easy money. God knows I'd pay to not have Noctis pals dressed like...that.

Maybe the added characters will be involved in the post-ending?

Oh, someone made a recipe from the game, and it looks really good :drool

LOL at the fact that the cook pretending to be Ignis and the video game control inputs.

Now I wish there is a cookbook. >.>

Haha, that's great.

Though I feel like we should have seen some kind of HP damage when he added brussle sprouts to that beef stew because they are so very nasty. Everything was going well until he did that.:amuse

Yeah, my mom said she would skip the Brussels sprouts if she makes the stew.

The first DLC episode has been announced as well as some updates for FFXV (though it's Japan only ATM for the latter).

Getting to be about time for the first real indicators of sales figures to come out for FFXV in the form of December's NPD. I'm really curious how the game did.

We got some stuff early in the month that was the general PR speak. The whole "fastest selling game in the franchise" thing they were throwing out there(which...they always say that). And 5 million "units shipped" thing, which just means that's how many physical copies they sent to retail. The number of units actually sold is referred to as "units sold through" and I have yet to see anything about that in the west.

In Japan it definitely did good but not great. The weakest sales there for a Final Fantasy game since Final Fantasy V but definitely not bad.

Looks like Final Fantasy 15's sales are about 6 million units at retail and digital.

So, unless they do something big with dlc expansions, lifetime it should probably hit 7 million units sold or at least get fairly close. So it's on pace to come in a little under Final Fantasy XIII. Pretty good. Nowhere near that goal of 10 million but pretty good.

NPD - FFXV experienced the best console launch month in franchise history:

"Although a Call of Duty has now topped the December sales chart for the ninth consecutive year, Final Fantasy XV was the best selling game for the PS4 during the month," said Naji. "Final Fantasy XV was the second best-selling title for December 2016... Final Fantasy XV experienced the best console launch month in the history of the franchise selling 19 percent more new physical units than Final Fantasy XIII in its launch month and 54% more in total dollar revenue including digital full game sales."

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...are-battlefield-1-lead-2016-us-game-sales-npd

This puts XV at 1,573,000 million sales this month, not including digital, may be 1.8 million to 2 million if you include digital.

We may never know the answer but it's going to be interesting to see if it can pay for itself. It did well. If it sold the reported 6 million plus copies that's 360 million total. A big cut of that goes to retailers as well as Sony and Microsoft as well as physical manufacturing. But it's still got to be easily in the 200-250 million dollar range. That's a nice chunk of change.

But development costs for a game that took this long to make have got to be huge and the marketing budget on this game was not small either. Then there is King's Glaive, the Brotherhood Anime, the huge released date announcement event. That is a lot of money.

Square Enix has a quick survey about Final Fantasy. It mostly asks you what character you would like to play and what world/area/city you like to be in and why.

I suppose it may be better that way. It's a waste to have a simple turn-based, command-based game for a console like PS4, unless you can do it as pretty as Persona 5. On another note, those screenshots are really nostalgic. I had only played a few games on PS1 when I first started playing the original FF7.
