Here's one theory I've been having for a long time. The Goddess clan asked Ban to kill Mel right? We assume that they did it out of revenge, or because he's a serious threat to them, which he was 3000 years ago, enough to dissuade them from attacking the demon clan.
But what if they knew he grew weaker and didn't have all his power, and more importantly that he had broken a few decrees? To ensure that Mel got his power back and free of the decrees they wanted him dead.
Or knowing that he's linked to the demon king, and being afraid of the latter taking over his body, they saw that it was better for all the clans as they have said if Mel were to die.

The Goddess clan did nothing wrong.

Meliodas was stricken with Charity and Piety either in this recent battle or way before in the past. During the time they ordered Ban to kill him, he was free of those both, as he could both move and lacked affection toward the demons.

The only problem with this theory, is how come nobody has noticed yet?
I would have assumed that most of the ten commandments would have known about the amazing magical power they were searching for 3000 years ago, and since all the clans wanted it, it was clearly powerful.
The question here is, was it a case of being all around Britannia and just in the atmosphere at the time, or did someone back then have Sunshine as well and simply didn't show up to fight in the war? As it stands, i could see this power being linked to why the magic in the atmosphere has decreased over the years.

I also had another theory that Escanor was not entirely human... or perhaps, he is not human at all? I mean, if we think about what happens to his body and the explanation Gowther gave on it, it is actually his genetic code that causes his body to buff up with the rising of the sun and make him more powerful? So what if Escanor is actually a hybrid between two clans, or his power has given him said attributes of multiple clans? The reason people call him a monster is simple because you cannot classify Escanor as any of the clans and thus that is the easiest way to categorize him?
I mean... even the commandments are calling him that, so yeah... XD

That's all good and all, but Mera said that no one had that power 3000 years ago. So if one of Escanor's ancestors had it, then it would have been recorded and logically he should have used that power to fight the demons, like his descendant is doing now. It's a matter of survival, humanity faced extermination and still does.

Well it's not like we know where his power comes from anyway.

Well, the commandments clearly are not copy and pasted from the biblical ten commandments. Inspired, yes, but not the same. It is a pretty big stretch to suggest estarosa's or zeldris' commandment match those commandments anyways. You incur estarosa's commandment by feeling aggression towards him.... And zeldris' by not facing him. If anything you'd need to invert the those two commandments to make a tad more sense. The adultery bit does not match with purity either. And ban did not fall under moonspiet's commandment when using his hunter fest against estarosa so odds are his commandment does not relate to stealing. And selfishness and not being envious is a bit of a stretch as well. The author is clearly using christian imagery here but he is Japanese so it wouldn't be strange if he is using Buddhist precepts as well.

On another note, I have been wondering about gowther... As far as we know gowther was a commandment until he fell prey to it. And he remains under its influence until today. However the implication so far is that he might actually remember who he is. The commandments are not just weapons for demons but also the means to keep the 10 in check. Even meliodas made the point that he got rid of the commandments by dying (and also he got the ability to resurrect from them as well). Which means that gowther eventually will have to free himself from the commandment and the only way to do that as far as I can tell is to die or have the demon king take it. I guess we can look forward to gowther dying and them resurrecting free of the demon king.

And another thing... We know it is thanks to the demon king's commandments that meliodas is able to resurrect. However none of the commandments we know would actually help meliodas achieve that. Love, piety, faith, truth... None of those help at all based on the effects we know. And realistically speaking a commandment allowing a resurrection would be the exact opposite of the purpose of the commandments considering they are also the means by which commandments are controlled. So I have a crackpot theory. Meliodas resurrecting is not the result of his own curse. Hear me out on this one.

3000 years ago meliodas betrayed the demon clan and in doing so killed two other commandments. What if the death of those guys is not an accident? But rather the death of those two was part of mel's plan to die and resurrect? So he creates a situation where he falls prey to both commandments and the combined curses make him as he is today. Then he dies and is free from the demon king.

Then we have two other possibilities to consider. Did those two aid meliodas intentionally or unintentionally? There is the possibility that meliodas tricked those two into a situation where both their commandments would be activated and then mel killed them. But there is also the possibility that they also betrayed the demon clan and came up with this plan in order for meliodas to be able to fight. They would have sacrificed themselves for their friend and future. Of course, there is also the possibility that meliodas getting the ability to resurrect was dumb luck from when he fought those two rather than a plan.

To add to this.... gloxinia, who seemingly inherited the commandment of one of the two commandments mel killed 3000 years ago, is the commandment of repose... repose.... death.... there is a slight connection there. I guess we will know once we learn of dolor's commandment and its effect. And gloxinia's effect as well of course.

Huh the commandments decrees in the manga are actually inspired by the regular 10 commandments but also by the Buddhist 10 commandments.

1. Thou art well advised not to take the lives of living beings.
2. Thou art well advised not to take what is not given.
3. Thou art well advised not to engage in sexual misconduct.
4. Thou art well advised not to commit perjury (speak falsely when questioned as a witness).
5. Thou art well advised not to speak divisively (separating those who are united).
6. Thou art well advised not to speak harshly (offensively).
7. Thou art well advised not to speak frivolously.
8. Thou art well advised not to covet.
9. Thou art well advised not to harbor ill-will.
10. Thou art well advised not to hold wrong-views.

Suzuki is Japanese, and it makes sense he would be inspired by Buddhism which is historically one of the religions of Japan.

So if we take some of the buddhist commandments like "Thou art well advised not to harbor ill-will", that's exactly what Estarossa's commandment is. Those who harbor ill-will to him and prolly others end up breaking his decree and become powerless. Clearly one of the commandments that is missing in the Buddhist ones is Zeldris' piety. That one is only found in the Jewish/Christian 10 commandments.

So it's not as clear cut as some think, the way Suzuki is using the commandments, he's being inspired by more than one version of the commandments, from more than one religion.

This arc? There's only 13 chapters left. Or are you suggesting they'll all be dealt with in the very short amount of chapters left till the 200 chapters mark, which is approximatively when the second major arc is supposed to end? Doubtful.

Estarossa and Zeldris are still alive, if they had been taken down already it would have been feasible, but now not anymore.

In general I'm just so tired of seeing their faces, I hope they all rot in hell.

But who knows what Suzuki has in mind...for the exception of Estarossa, and some of the less relevant ones like Gray Lord, I think there's a few that are interesting.

1. You shall have no other gods before Me
Still the same, Zeldris with Piety is the one that fits the best without a doubt. Everyone that turns their back on him is forced into obidience, as he’s the substitute for god aka the demon king.
2. You shall not make idols
I’ll go with Melascula the Faith for this one again, for the same reasons. Losing faith in your important person even for a second and your thoughts wavering to something or someone else activates this commandment’s curse.
3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain
As you said, Monspeet with Reticence fits this one the best probably. He interprets Derieri so he does talk a lot but he always says it properly, almost elegantly, without ever using any bad language or anything. He’s careful with his words, thus this commandment is probably him.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
Gloxinia, Repose. There’s not much to comment on here. It’s about resting and Gloxinia’s commandment is about resting.
5. Honor your father and your mother
Now that I have the kanji for Estarossa’s Charity I think it’s this one. A commandment against violence or at least symbolizing love.
6. You shall not murder
Obviously Grayroad with Pacifism.
7. You shall not commit adultery
Derieri with Purity. Just… purity. Especially with the latest chapter where we saw her losing it against the goddess because of how badly they fucked up, killing their kids, it seems she’s someone who has very strong bonds with her friends and family and thinks rather about those than about adultery. Just… pure.
8. You shall not steal
Gowther aka Fraudrin, Selflessness, is this… Maybe? Either this or the 10th commandment but I think Drole fits the 10th a biiiit better. Easy, if you’re selfless you don’t want anything so you don’t steal anything. A selfless person also worries about others before they worry about themselves so stealing something from someone for your own needs and hurting someone else in the process… Is not something someone selfless would do.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
Obviously Galand the Truth
10. You shall not covet
Drole, Patience. I can’t really explain why I think Drole’s commandment fits this. I think it’s about not wanting anything and if you’re patient you can go on without things others have. You will get through and do things your own way, that’s maybe longer but you still arrive at your goal - if you even have one.

Besides Piety is "Honor your parents".So Mera's is "No other gods before me".

It's pretty clear by now that Suzuki isn't using only the Christian 10 commandments.

Alright here is my somewhat definite version of each commandment and their corresponding decrees:
1-Faith: Mera's commandment. It's supposed to be "Thou shall have no other Gods before me".Only found in the Christian version.

2-Love: Estarossa's decree. For the Christian commandments, it's derived from the Great commandment "Love thy neighbor as yourself" which is actually related to "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor". But the most logical and perfect source of inspiration comes from the Buddhist commandment "Thou art well advised not to harbor ill-will". Those who harbor ill-will break his decree, you can't be more literal than that.

3-Piety: Zel's decree.This commandment is only found in the Christian version.It's "Thou shall honor your parents". The demon king is Zeldris' parent.His commandment in general is about reverence, and of course filial piety is part of it.

4-Pacifism:Gray Lord's decree. It's present in both the Christian and Buddhist commandments. The Christian commandment is "Thou shall not kill" and the Buddhist one is "Thou art well advised not to take the lives of living beings."

5-Reticence: Monspiet's decree. It can only be "Thou shall not take the name of the Lord in vain" for the Christian commandment and the "Thou art well advised not to speak harshly/divisively/frivolously. Basically anything that has to do with talking.

6-Purity: Derri's decree. It's "Thou shall not commit adultery" for the Christian one, and "Thou art well advised not to engage in sexual misconduct" for the Buddhist one.Pretty self explanatory.

7-Truth:Galan's decree. It's "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighboor" since false witness=lying. This is for the Christian one, for the Buddhist one it's "Thou art well advised not to commit perjury".
In law especially, perjury is when someone is a witness and he lies at the bar, that's when he commits perjury.

8-Selflessness: Fraudrin/Gowther's decree.It's "Thou shall not covet" for both the Christian and Buddhist commandment.Coveting is lusting over something, or someone.That is the direct opposite of what is to be selfless, as in not coveting or wanting anything for yourself.

9-Repose: Gloxinia's decree. It's "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy" for the Christian.I can't find an equivalent in the Buddhist ones atm.

10-Patience: Dolor's decree.As crazy as it sounds, this is imo the "Thou shall not steal" commandment. Let me explain why.
When you're impatient,and want something to be done quickly, or just want something now, you might be tempted to "steal" it. And that is what being impatient is all about.For example, instead of reading a whole book for your assignment in literature, you might be tempted to look for a summary online, or even look for someone else's summary and use it as your own(or just get some ideas out of it). And that is pretty much stealing.
Thieves for the most part are people who don't want to go through the trouble of earning the money and means to get something, and instead are being impatient and resort to thievery to get what they want.
So that is why Dolor's decree imo is "Thou shall not steal".

Of course we'd have to know how those decrees work, that could be another hint as to which one they're supposed to represent, like with Estarossa's decree.

Can't believe Doler and Glox are that powerful wonder how strong there are without demon blood. So Zeldris is the strongest Commandments after all really looking forward to seeing what his God magic can do. Galan without his critical over is the weakest power level wise and Fraudrin is the weakest overall. Not that surprising since he just a replacement for Gowther.

Even though this thread is rather dead I'm going to post this here anyway. Please understand this theory isn't finished yet.


This is my personal theory on why Meliodas betrayed his clan and who Elizabeth really is.


After the recent chapters we have learned that the goddess clan had betrayed their pact with the demon clan and killed their children. In the most recent chapter (188) Derriere questioned why Elizabeth was there, the only way for Derriere to know Elizabeth is for her to have been born before the demon clan was sealed.

As we already know Elizabeth is the reincarnation of Liz, Meliodas’ former lover meaning it is possible for her to have reincarnated more than once. As of the most recent chapters we’ve also learned that it is possible for a goddess to possess a body. My thought is that 3000 years ago Meliodas met the first incarnation of Elizabeth and fell in love with her, this would be whilst the war was still taking place. During the war Elizabeth was the leader of the goddesses and was the one who had issued the order to kill the demon children, this could explain why Derriere remembered her and did what she did.


Due to Meliodas having fallen in love with the goddess, and the goddess eventually returning the feelings he turned his back on the demon clan and was cursed by his father (The Demon King) to be cursed with eternal life. Meliodas then fought alongside the goddess clan to seal away the demon clan which proved successful in the end. The goddess wanting to spend the rest of her time with Meliodas possessed a human before the goddesses lost the majority of their power due to sealing away the demon clan.


Goddesses are shown to have a longer life span than that of a demon which is only 1000 years, Nerobasta the goddess that was recently revealed is over 3000 years old. This could be an explanation as to why the goddess possessing Elizabeth hasn’t died yet, however, due to the human body only lasting around 90 years the goddess has to keep reincarnating into a new body.


Lastly, a promise is constantly mentioned in the series between Meliodas and his lover (Elizabeth/Liz) this could be a promise he made to the first incarnation that he would break his curse so that they could die together. Which is apparent when Meliodas has stated that he will break the curse and how it is done.


Also just a very small theory as to why Gloxinia and Dolor serve the demon king, Zeldris the sin of piety takes control of anyone who turns their back on him. This control stretches to the demon king making them listen to all of his commands.
