Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Decades long series losing sales is nothing surprising. The audience they are directed to simply cannot easily get into it (and no, despite the editor's claims, Wano is not a good way to "get into One Piece", and no one is jumping into a series starting from the 90th volume), and the long time fans start losing interest in it as they grow up (or they just simply don't feel like the series is as good as it used to be).
If anything, One Piece holding up its sales for so long, and even managing to reach its peak after more than a decade in the running was the surprising part.

Long running series can still be appealing to the new generations (although with Japan's declining birth rates they are never going to reach OP's heights), but not 20 years in the running series. Kimetsu being a short investment helps it being picked up by all sorts of demographic, some of which would normally find a potential 10+ years investment too intimidating.

As for potential claims of "OP only losing to Kimetsu due to corona", considering Kimetsu has already outsold any 2017-2019 full year OP volume before the half year mark, I wouldn't exactly give them any credit.

I don't think it's a worthy question to pursue, because the coronavirus just completely wrecked most industries.

You might as well just write 2020 off, with a few exceptions.
Nice, another excuse to add to the list with fujo and npc.

Conan? That has always been in the decline. Unlucky for Sunday, it is their sole bestseller now.

While I do also feel that is a bit extreme I would also like to see more darker new jump series come out kind along the lines of shonen magazine manga To you the immortal/attack on titan or even some more horror/thriller manga like the Promised Neverland
When TPN ends, we atleast need an puzzle thriller replacement. Mann I gonna miss TPN so much, even tho it had his downs in the last arc

It's not an excuse. I'm just not convinced that covid-19 is *only* affecting OP, and it's not just on a downward trend regardless of the pandemic.

I feel demon slayer should run a little longer considering there are still some plot holes and it’s selling insanely well for shonen jump
Nope nope nope. It wont
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also around December 2019 shonen jump has made a mobile game which includes characters from demon slayer for mobile devices
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

They could just use the jojo bizarre adventure approach and maybe use a new villain, hero, genre, battle system, and setting each part
I'm still pissed about jump force. Why couldn't they just remade J-star, hoe can they degrade the development of jump games so much.. also the license issues are just big excuses for just money grabs

As much as I do like seeing demon slayer sales I do wonder if one piece sales has been staying consistent this year or if it had fallen off compared to previous years
One Piece have sold about 4.5m copies this year so far so it's not as good as last year, but not as bad as 2018 either.

I think it’s really hard to gauge the affects of covid-19 in the manga industry because volumes are still being released and selling week to week. With other industries like film and anime, works which have been delayed or postponed however we haven’t seen any examples of this with manga volumes (to my knowledge).

@MrDropCombo Thanks somebody gets me. While I don’t hate gag series I feel like jump is just doing to much with them I just want to see more serious battle series (more in the same vain as d gray man, demon slayer, or hunter hunter), thrillers, and or maybe even a new horror serialization. That is the main reason I have been excited for TOGW because it seems like a more serious than the ones that we have been getting this past year.
Yeahh i get you completely, but i guess WSJ always have to fill the void of certain genres like romance, gag and sports when their established series comes to to end.

If you haven’t already, I recommend checking out JJK, great action manga (in my opinion) with cool characters and a story which isn’t afraid of tackling darker themes. If the art is up your ally, the action scenes are as badass as the raid movies.

And yeahh I had hopes for guardian cause the premise and art was nice but it’s just been okay so far. I feel like there’s cool characters but the current pace of the story hasn’t given us time to connect with them individually, it’s kinda just been run, action, run, action

2018 was one of the few years where OP only released 3 volumes, the first of which only came out in march. So not really, 2018 was better on an individual volume basis.

However despite the precautions, Shueisha's security really sucks if they can leak One Piece spoilers even before information about the issue is leaked,

extra-extra: (may or may not directly with above, but still a reply to thread

- too soon
- GGRKS
- distribution is a chain, the longer and more joints, the more weak spots it have

That was just one week, and most likely only done because of the same restructuring which lead to the Issue 21/22 delay. Other productions had their production suspended indefinitely until a later date.

However despite the precautions, Shueisha's security really sucks if they can leak One Piece spoilers even before information about the issue is leaked,
...This is about COVID.

Not Shueisha's security regarding leakers.

...No? Araki has said he did the shift mostly because he found Johnathan too limited a protagonist, hence why Joseph was such a radical departure.
Refer to the "Hirohiko Araki talks about character creation!" section of volume 8 of the JoJonium release. Araki says "The idea of making the main character of Part 3 Japanese was something I had thought of doing around the end of Part 1. I had originally planned JoJo to be a trilogy, and thought it would be appropriate to have the final, fated confrontation take place in present-day Japan"

In the "Hirohiko Araki talks about character creation!" section of volume 4 of the JoJonium release, Araki had this to say on Joseph's design: "it was difficult to think of a way to overcome the reader's perception that it had turned into an entirely different manga altogether! That's why I decided to keep Joseph's appearance the same as Jonathan's but change his personality. Now that the series is up to Part 8, though, I wish I had differentiated the appearance of the protagonists of Part 1 and 2 a bit more (laughs)"

Araki absolutely always intended for the series to have multiple parts. If it had flopped, it would have flopped. Instead, it turned out to be popular, and either by his own choice or by the pushing of Shueisha, he decided to continue writing the series past his originally intended trilogy. He doesn't mention (at least in this interview) that his reason for the radical personality difference between Jonathan and Joseph is because of Jonathan being "limited", he said it was because he wanted people to know Joseph was a separate character, hence his radically different personality despite looking like Jonathan (which is reasonable, given he is his grandson).

I'm probably the only person that mentioned the NPC thing, Idk if anyone else mentioned but I didn't really say it as an excuse, but whatever.

I'm defending KnY here btw, it's dumb to think that COVID19 didn't in some way have an effect in KnY and in the entire manga industry, an obvious example like Buranchi said is that different anime stopped their production so it will probably affect their boost, KnY itself got its movie premiere moved, don't you think that movie would have probably boosted KnY sales even more?

Some KnY fans here make it sound like everything other user say that could imply that other manga could have sold more is like an excuse to degrade KnY being the best seller it is.. when it's not at all!, it's pretty obvious COVID19 had (and will continue) to have an impact in the manga/anime industry (As it has had in... pretty much everything else)

So yeah, what I'm trying to say is that COVID19 probably affected KnY sales too, maybe it would have sold idk 50million this year by now thanks to the movie, but we will never know.

OP has been on a downwards trend for years now. It's not right to assume it suddenly stabilized this year out of nowhere.

There was no official information about kny date before April 10, so we can't know if Oct 16 was the original date or it was moved

I'm not making that argument, though. Honestly, even if covid-19 hadn't happened, we'd likely still be seeing similar trends in regards to OP specifically.

Although, having said that, I think the worst of the covid-19 stuff has yet to happen. Let's see what happens when it's like a year from now and a vaccine still hasn't been discovered.
