Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

overall the idea of Luffy's awakening, the practical use, imo would be defensive in nature. much like the saying, "I'm rubber, you're glue, what ever hits me bounces off of me and sticks to you" my thought is, if Luffy does unlock his awakening, supposing he could effect, say,a whole island-turning it into one big rubber island-I think he could essentially deffend a Buster call.

Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

what i'm sure of that Brook got the awakening during his 2 years training ..

check this chapter
http://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/635/4

he can control other people souls ! let them see what he wants them to see !

in other words .. he can control now (his soul alone) by letting it move outside his body

but he can also control the souls of people around him ..
I'm thinking too that Brook is a good candidate for the awakening, but for me it's only close to achieve it. Same for Akainu and Aokiji, and also Robin and Whitebeard, who can use their paramecia powers not only on their body.
Ok, the fuit allows Robin to grow extra body parts, but normally you can't imbue objects and people with your DF power and use it.

I think that the awakening of a Devil Fruit has something to do with knowledge and experience.
One DF user who wants to awaken his power may need to know what Devil Fruits are, this intel will give him the best chances to learn what is the true nature of his DF power, then he'll need to know himself and get so much experience in using that specific power that... this will finally make him able to "hack" his body and his own power to make it reach its fullest extent. Nothing more than Luffy is already doing, but on a whole different scale.

Maybe "awakening" a DF has different effects for every power, or maybe the awakening is the same thing for all, but produces different effects for every DF class.

Let's make the hypothesis that "awakening" can also enable one to extend his true power outside of his body.

Paramecia: This type of fruit will give you superhuman abilities.

Logia: this one will permanently "change" your body into an element.

Zoan: this fruit will enable you to change into an animal with various degree of hybridization, like if every single time you transform into one of the three basic forms... your body is the result of a variable amount of your ancestors doing or not doing dirty things with that specific animal. :3c

But this does not describe the Awakened Zoans we saw in Impel Down, at all.
We never saw them extending their powers outside of their bodies, turning walls and people into animal flesh and ordering them around like they're their pack leader or something.
But they're mindless beasts, so maybe they're failed experiments, maybe they're not even made by government, but they're in there as ex-prisoners became useful tools.

Lastly, in OP we saw some examples of "powers that manifest themselves in extended areas", to me the extent of this phenomenon depends only on strenght. It doesn't matter if it's Haoshoku Haki, "Room", "Birdcage", or the effects of a Logia Power. Strenght = area. :D

Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

The trend with awakening is perhaps, rather linear and based solely on your DF: it just seems to multiply the original properties/ability of the fruit.

  • Doflamingo controls and creates strings:

    - Awakening amplifies his source of strings which as a result gives him more strings to control.
  • Luffy's ability allows him to stretch:

    - Awakening would possibly increase his elasticity, that alone would would make him more durable. Things that are physically straining wouldn't be anymore.

    - Gear 3 could become twice bigger than it currently is with increased elasticity; gear 2 will be many times faster and gear 4 would be astronomically more powerful.

    - If his density increases as a result of awakening, he'll be able to compress a lot more air into his body resulting in explosive power.

    - The idea that one day he might be able to increase muscle mass (G4) and bone densitiy (G3) at the same time wouldn't be farfetched. An enhanced G4 or possibly G5?

    - Also have to consider that Luffy still has the appearance of a youth, imo he's still growing which possibly means he's still going to get naturally stronger despite an awakening (except Oda keeps his boyish build).

  • According to Crocodile in Impel Down, the the awakened Zoans experienced increased strength, durability and stamina. A Zoan DF does this already, so more or less implying that awakening just expands on what is already there.

Nah, alhatmy. What brook did is called Hypnotism. Just like what Jango does. You don't do anything to their souls, you just mess up their brain and they will see what brook wants them to see.

"move people souls"

and in anime E565 "can take them to his world = using his devil fruit !"

Is that not just a poetic way to describe the effects of music?

Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

I'm partial to the idea that DF awakenings should have different mechanics (i.e. not just being able to turn things into the DF's property) because it'd be more interesting that way.

However, even if it is indeed just that, as long as Luffy achieves the same level of control Doflamingo has, it would still be a pretty powerful effect. a couple examples:

•there have been many times in the manga where Luffy uses different materials as weapons/armor - gold vs enel fight, wax vs magellan fight.. because of paramecia's distinct weakness where the user's body is still vulnerable as long as the attack can damage the material itself. However if luffy can turn things into rubber and gain control over their shape, his defense would increase dramatically since he can use anything to shield himself. He can use it offensively as well, vehicle accidents unfortunately prove how destructive tires can be, given enough force behind them.

•bouncing off surfaces would give him tremendous mobility and power. Imagine him falling then turning the ground into a massive trampoline to attack an airborne opponent with a massive uppercut. It can also work in reverse, if he punches someone but they are able to defend, getting thrown back then bouncing off a wall opens them up to another, more powerful attack.

Overall I like the 'awakened' idea a lot more than haki, it doesn't seem as much of an ass-pull.

Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

I don't know why Oda even introduced the term awakening. It seemed logical for me that a skilled fighter like DD could make other things like buildings into strings.

But what I hope to see is if for example logia users can inject haki into their power. Imagine Sabo injecting Haki into his flames, would be bad ass if you ask me

Re: Awakening of Devil Fruit Powers

This new introduction to awakening has become a bit too much. Now DF users can be considered OP if they can awaken it. Imagine if a kid gets Gura Gura no mi and awakens it and then randomly punches the air. The entire world will be destroyed (Not a good example!)

It provides a new ability to a Devil Fruit, but a weakling would still be a weakling.

The current arc gave some context regarding what an awakened fruit user is. Doflamingo described it as being able to manifest their powers beyond their bodies and into other stuff. However that presents a problem which is that such a transformation would either not work or be relatively useless.

With doflamingo it makes sense. He is able to turn other stuff into strings. Which is useful because doflamingo can control strings to begin with. Otherwise he would turn stuff into strings and it would just lie there. Its weird that stuff turns into strings even though doflamingo does not actually turn into strings but rather generates them. Can doflamingo turn into strings?

Anyways, this would clearly be useless with other fruits or the awakening would have to be something different from what we saw with doflamiingo. Take the ID guards. They were completely different from other zoans and stuff around them was not turning into zebras and whatnot. In turn they seemed to be more bestial but unlike their original animal or human forms. I wonder how this will look on chopper...

Anyways, another case would be luffy. What would an awakening look like on him? Would there be any practical purpose in turning stuff around him into rubber? He can't control rubber so it does not seem useful... Maybe it would be useful for bouncing purposes but even that sounds weird.

Or brook's fruit... I guess it would make sense if he could have the souls of people around him leave their bodies... Or maybe that would be too OP? With logia users it would be specially powerful, turning their surroundings into their element would be insane. Perhaps this is why punk hazard ended up like that? Aokiji and akainu used their awakenings and the island turned into that...

Or buggy... I guess his could be useful if he is able to cut stuff around him and throw it at people. It would be sort of like a telekinesis fruit.

Anyways, what do you guys think some awakenings would look like?

I think the Awakening can be divided between the 3 Devil Fruit power groups Zoan, Logia, Paramecia, but there are also subdivisions between the Paramecia powers. Like you said it seems like Zoan Awakening turns the user into the animal their power is based on and gives them a boost in strength but also takes away some of their human characteristics/traits like their looks, ability to speak and so on, while Logia Awakenings seem to affect everything their user came into contact with and leaving their element behind in the place they used the Awakening, for example Punk Hazard which is burning and freezing for over 2 years.

Doflamingo is a Paramecia user like Mr.3 or Magellan who can create things and this can effect their bodies like having a body made of strings or being resistant to poison. The Awakening of the latter two would probably look like Doflamingos one, they can turn objects in their surroundings into the things their DF powers are made of like strings, wax, poison etc.

But Luffy is different. His body is always in a rubber like condition even if he is unconscious or under water. He would be the same like Kuma and Buggy who should also always be in such a state. Kumas hands always have paws on them and he needs gloves so that they don't send everything he touches away. Buggy was also having his body parts divided while being send flying by Luffy. I think their Awakening must be different than the ones from people in Doflamingos DF power group.

I have no idea what that could be but something i thought about was a deactivation of their powers. If they could deactivate their powers by will they would have an advantage above other DF users like that Kairoseki or being in the water can't affect them. As we saw during the Marineford War Marco became useless after getting a Kairoseki handcuff. If Luffy one day would be in such a situation he would be even more worthless than Marco, because Luffy looses all his strength and falls to the ground when he even touches Kairoseki like the bars in the colosseum. He could train to fight like his grandfather Garp and something like that will be necessary in the future when Luffy faces Blackbeard. Against Blackbeard no DF power has a chance thanks to his ability to cancel them by touching a DF user, especially no DF user who is a close quarters fighter like Luffy.
An Awakening that allows a deactivation by will is the only thing i can think of for DF users like Luffy and Kuma.

Introduction

Awakening is a huge topic of interest and it has become one of mine too. Initially, I assumed it could end up with a lot of discrepancies if it were a deus-ex machina boost as there are so many devil fruit abilities, but Oda's shown he has a method to his madness. If anything, I expect awakening to be similar to haki; something that's been a part of One Piece since the beginning, isn't outlandish and is usually pretty simple. As we all saw with gear 4th, it was absolutely simple and straightforward and I expect awakening to be the same. Without further ado, I shall proceed to breaking down awakening and elaborate on the results of my findings.

What is Awakening

Awakening is the full manifesting of a Devil fruit's full power; it's a phenomenon that occurs when one has fully learnt to control their devil fruit.

A simple analogy to explain awakening would be it's more sensible to be able to ride a bicycle with perfect control at high speeds before upgrading to a motorbike or accidents will occur; the same is synonymous with Devil fruits, you don't get to use the full potential of an ability when control isn't adept.

Devil fruits

Devil fruits as we know endow one with powers; unbeknownst to us, there exists another side to these Devil fruits which is called awakening. I will be breaking up devil fruits into 2 sub-divisions:
  1. Baby-Stage: When referring to the initial powers granted which is the suppressed power of a Devil fruit.
  2. Awakened-Stage: When referring to the unsuppressed power of a Devil fruit.

Relationship between Devil fruit and User

The user and the Devil fruit are 2 separate entities, Joker's brief description of awakening is consistent with this belief; he goes on to mentions that it's the Devil fruit that awakens rather than the user. If it's the Devil fruit that awakens, then it begs the question, what role does the user play in awakening the devil fruit?

According to my findings, awakening is dependant on 1 factor which is perfect control over a Devil fruit at its "Baby-stage". How did I come to such a conclusion? One has to read Joker's analysis of Luffy before he boats about awakening as in answered in the spoiler.

  • Joker first analyses Luffy's gear 4th and his analysis implies it's being supported by haki rather than being solely used to enhance.
  • Joker proceeds to confirm this assertion by acknowledging Luffy's fairly good grasp over his ability which in other words means he doesn't have perfect control.
Based on this, it seems rather conclusive that only perfect control is necessary for one to awaken.
Simply put, there are 2 levels of Devil fruit control:
  1. Baby-tier control: Imperfect control over a Devil fruit.
  2. Awakened-tier control: Perfect control over a Devil fruit.
Advancing from Baby-tier control to Awakened-tier control at a Devil fruit's Baby-stage is when the Devil fruit advances to the Awakened-stage.

Rarity of Awakenings and Rare effects on Surroundings

The first thing to notice is he never says awakening is rare; however, he does say the moments it affect things other than the user's body are rare. In other words, awakening usually affects specifically the ability and in rare cases it affects not just the body of the user, but the surroundings too and this isn't limited Paramecia types, but all (albeit unlikely for Zoan types).

Why don't all Devil fruits affect outside the user's body?

Devil fruits usually only affect outside of the user's body if the fruit allows the user to create and control something; abilities that have such powers are the String fruit, Fire fruit, Ice fruit, Magma fruit, etc.

As one can tell, such people actually benefit from being able to create more of their powers to manipulate whereas others are unlikely to benefit.

Luffy turning buildings into rubber for example doesn't make him stronger whereas someone like Crocodile and Joker who create and control an element/object gain benefit and strengthening to their techniques by manipulating more of what they create.

Crocodile could create multiple tornadoes by producing more sand while we've seen Joker use all the strings he created to protect himself and ward of opponents with ease.

Permanent or Temporary

It's a permanent effect. Where is the sense in being a master at controlling one's abilities for a moment and then suddenly being bad at it? None whatsoever. How to prove this? The Zoans in Impel-down were awakened and despite losing consciousness, they remained in the same form.

This means awakening is not a temporary power-up since it neither requires stamina or consciousness (like gear 4th) as proven by awakened Zoans and this is also consistent with the theory that it's a level of mastery which isn't something lost with consciousness or stamina either.

Predicting Awakening Power-Ups

We initially spotted the awakened Zoans in Impel-down and Crocodile mentioned that they had increased resilience due to being awakened. We only saw them in their Awakened-stage, but based on Crocodile's comment it can be deduced that their resilience is higher than it was in the Baby-stage.
  1. Baby-stage: Zoan Devil fruit grants a resistance value 30 (made up value).
[*]Awakened-stage: Zoan Devil fruit now grants a resistance value level of 100 (made up value).
First thing to understand is Zoan Devil fruits naturally and by default increase one's physical feats and this fruit clearly increased their resistance at the Baby-stage and enhanced this even further at the Awakened Stage.

Joker before mentioning he was an awakened devil fruit user showed amazing utility of his Devil fruit. We saw him healing internal injuries; creating clones; manipulating people and using it to fly. It's fair to say even without the Birdcage and the White techniques (off-white, God thread, etc), he showed excellent control and mastery.
  1. Baby-stage: The Devil fruit only create strings from the user's body and possesses less variety of strings.
  2. Awakened-stage: As we all saw, the Devil fruit now has a huge variety of strings and creates strings from
    outside the user's body too.
What's quite clear is the awakened string fruit allowed him to have a larger source of strings which enabled him to produce much larger attacks.

Luffy has shown excellent control over his abilities, albeit with difficulty and draw backs attached. His gears have had a considerably detrimental effects on his health until he trained both his control over his fruit and his haki; however, we've seen that his gear 4th brings us back to the days of drawbacks which evidently shows that he's not mastered his Devil fruit as Joker rightly stated.
  1. Baby-stage: Rubber Devil fruit can stretch and expand within set limits and offers good durability against blunt-attacks.
  2. Awakened-stage: The Rubber Devil fruit now stretches and expands even further (with little to no limitation) and has increased durability against blunt attacks.
It sounds boring, but who knew rubber could actually be powerful? If Luffy can stretch further because of enhanced elasticity and durability, it means:
  1. Gear 2 can be faster and stronger since it can handle fast flow of blood than at the Baby-stage.
  2. Gear 3 can be bigger and compress even more air than at the Baby-stage, either way it's more powerful.
  3. Gear 4 wouldn't exhaust him any more because of stronger elasticity & durability and haki wouldn't be necessary to support it, but only to enhance it's power.
  4. Stronger rubber properties means he can combine Muscle balloon and Bone balloon without risk; he'd probably almost die doing that now, Gear 5?

Conclusion

It's relatively straight forward; once the user's control has advanced from Baby-tier control to Awakened-tier control at the Devil fruit's Baby-stage, it means the Devil fruit advances to the Awakened staged where the full spectrum of the Devil fruit's power is simply unleashed (permanently).

So at first... i think Brook has already awakened his Devilfruit he too had it centuries and the current use of his ability is really awesome. He can slip out of his body and scout in soulform.

Another good guess would be Chopper with his rumbleballs. Maybe his drug is stimulating his Devilfruit in a way, where he can use awakened forms. After the Timeskip he managed to train himself so that he doenst need the rumbleball anymore like this. Also His strongest form kinda reminds me of the awakened zoans regarding his behavior. Rumbleballs --> Shortcut to awakening Zoans.

Robin otherwise is a totally different thing, we saw her spread her limbs on the distance, thats practically the entire use of this fruit which makes sense. So if she would awaken it would be possible for her not only to create limbs from a distance, but also turn buildings and other surroundings into her limbs. (Which would be pretty lame because her baseform is right now better then this.) -> Awakened too with the basetalent only to spread her hands from her body?

How would Luffys awakening be? Actually i think not so much different like doflamingos. Just think about it, if he could turn around into rubber... Try to shoot the Sunny with a canonball i dare you. He also could turn swords into rubber and render them useless against him. (his biggest weakness!)

Examples of possibly Awakened characters

Ace, Aokiji, Akainu are like Doflamingo in the sense that they're able to:
Lolwut. Dude i know you like Ace and all, but every fire he created did come from him. In case of logia i would say the awakening raises the elementstrength. Like what? Like Akainus Magma > Over fire. Ace awakening could have been an even hotter fire then magma. (which is totally possible) Enel could make an entire storms with lightning and what else too. Akainu did create Magmameteorites. Aokiji frooze the entire sea around marineford. Ace just created a big fireball on his indexfinger.

I would also put Hancock in here, normally her fruit should have the stuneffect only by contact with her, like demonstrated in marineford, but she can do it in distance.

Other fruit ideas:

Buggy could actually split his surroundings, like the ground and render people immobile, or he could split himself automaticly like a logia into very tiny buggyparts.

Kidds could be very nice too, he could make anything magnetic to him.

Capone Gang Bege would be very tricky i guess.

Alvidas would be very difficult to deal with, no strong stand any where you go.

PS:

Crocodile would have been added to the possibly awakened Logias, but he hasn't replicated the same abilities that the others have despite being similarly intangible and Smoker included.
https://youtu.be/eZCBnqgcRKA?t=59s

When i´m seeing that correctly he turns his surrounding in a second into a desertwasteland with sandstorm swirling around. Thats way more advanced then a big fireball.

Like I showed in my posts, the semi intangibility form, the scale of attacks, and the fact they're able to spread their DFs effects without invoking an attack are things Crocodile and Smoker haven't done, it's only Logical to assume that their mastery of their DFs are not on the same tier.

Ace stopped rain falling or snow falling in a city he passed by, Aokiji and Akainu changed the climate and terrain of a whole island; Crocodile nor Smoker have been able to do such things. Crocodile fought Luffy in the desert and still lost, he's got a powerful DF but it's not likely he's unlocked it to his full potential.

Most of Crocodile's attacks are melee-based despite being a Logia, he should be making use of ranged attacks like Aokiji's Pheasant Beak and Ace's Kyoukaen. He's not an advanced DF user when compared to other Logia.

When Crocodile changed that area into desert, it was an invoked attack called Ground death; when Aokiji changed his surroundings to Ice when confronting Doflamingo, it wasn't an invoked attack nor was it Ice Age, but just an effect of his powers. Similar to Doflamingo, when he changed his surroundings to strings, it wasn't an attack but an effect of his powers.

Crocodile can't stand in a place and change the surroundings to desert, Crocodiles has to invoke an attack whereas Aokiji, Akainu, Doflamingo and Ace don't.

I'm not a fan of Ace, just a fan of logical speculation lol especially when there's evidence.

Gosh. Croc was semiintangible and has a variety of big bang attacks. Sables is ranged attacks, actually most of his attacks are ranged because if he gets in close combat he sucks u dry. Like i posted before Croc did turn a big area into sand in second, Ace did nothing like that. Hell not even close. Currently Crocs mastery of his logia is way above Ace. He has a onehitattack with his drysucker, he can send people flying thanks to sables, he can turn the area he is fighting into sand + he has various attacks that are devastating. Ace only created fire and used it at range. Even his strongest attack was only a big fireball and nothing else.

Crocodile fought Luffy in the desert
The first time. The second time he created the desert. Atleast like i recall.

Just look at Aokiji, Ace and Akainu and find similar feats by Crocodile which replicate them, you wouldn't find any.

Crocodile changing his surroundings into element without invoking an attack? None.
But you'll find Ace, Aokiji, Akainu and Doflamingo changing surroundings without invoking attacks.

Crocodile's projected attacks don't scale to Aokiji's Pheasant Beak or Ace's Kyoukaen.

Crocodile never affected the weather, Ace, Aokiji and Akainu have as Logias.

Well I put Crocodile on same level as Smoker.

But you'll find Ace, changing surroundings without invoking attacks.
Where? :D

If you dont include sandstorm into "weather" then you are right". Did we actually see Ace affecting the weathe ror did we just "heard of it"? :D

What? He can turn everything into a friggin dessert. How does this not scale?

And i personally wouldnt count croc under the awakened but you know what? He even said that he trained and strenghted his devilfruit to its current limits. So it may actually be that he is an awakened user.

But i also wouldnt count Ace either on a lvl with aokiji and co. but that i already made clear in various threads. You for your turn got your fanglasses on, so lets stop discuss Ace and its "feats". I believe some are already annoyed by us. :cheez

I think you are all forgetting one of the next most important string of questions we should be asking Oda!...

With Awakening, can Doffy make his weiner stringy?
