Yozakura is definitely a level below the rest in terms of growth rate.

You keep ignoring the fact that the growth rate of Yozakura is nowhere near Mashle and Undead. These two keep raising their sales with every volume released and by the time they reach Yozakura length they will probably be closer to 100k while Yozakura at vol 5 wont even reach 40k and grows very slowly. You can look at their trajectories and predict that UxU and Mashle will be much bigger than Yozakura in the future which Shueisha would do too when planning future anime adaptations.
I’m not ignoring the growth rate, and understand that it’s likely that those series will likely grow faster. Imo as of now though, all 3 are in the same tier level.

Imo the content of of Yozakura has been improving and is miles better than UxU and Mashle, so I’m confident it with the recent placements and color pages, as well as improvement in the overall series will lead to more steady growth.

My point is though, if all series are worthy of an anime, i doubt Jump specifically greenlights anime in the order of what’s selling more.

We also know that a lot of the time the studios themselves approach Jump for the anime, not vice versa. If a Studio happened to have interest in adapting Yozakura before the other series for whatever reason, I doubt just is gonna say “naw, we can’t give you Yozakura yet. Mashle is selling more, so we gotta make sure that series gets an anime first”

Now that we've seen all of the new series that will premiere for the 2020 WSJ year, how would you guys rank all of the 2020 premieres purely by their first chapters? If I had to rank them, I'd place them like this:

1. Magu-chan: God of Destruction
2. Undead Unluck
3. Sakamoto Days
4. Ayakashi Triangle
5. Moriking
6. Mashle
7. High School Family
8. Me & Roboco
9. Agravity Boys
10. Hardboiled Cop and Dolphin
11. Burn the Witch
12. Phantom Seer
13. Build King
14. Bone Collection
15. Time Paradox Ghostwriter
16. Guardian of the Witch
17. Zipman!!
18. Our Blood Oath

Trying to think through this list made me realize that I didn't really like too many of the series' first chapters this past year since even some first chapters that I didn't like all that much still made it into the top half of my rankings.

There were some of these that grew on me over time, but most of the others continued to lose even more steam over time. Biggest favorable surprise has to go to Mashle. I found the artwork pretty off-putting and the jokes from the first few chapters bland, but after a handful of chapters, the cast and humor started to gel together.

Biggest disappointment of the year goes to Time Paradox Ghostwriter. I was massively hyped for Date's return, but the main character was so wildly unlikeable and the plot was so poorly executed that I couldn't help but feel relived when I saw it was ending since Date could do the art for a much better series (never forget the volume 2 cover lol).
While you keep discussing about sales, I'll do the thing I like most: ranking stuff!
1st chapters of 2020 new series:

1. Hard-boiled Cop and Dolphin
2. Undead Unluck
3. Sakamoto Days
4. Build King
5. Mashle
6. Time Paradox GhostWriter
7. Moriking
8. Bone Collection
9. Magu-chan: God of Destruction
10. Burn the Witch
11. Me & Roboco
12. Zipman!!
13. Phantom Seer
14. Guardian of the Witch
15. High School Family
16. Ayakashi Triangle
17. Our Blood Oath

Didn't read: Agravity Boys

HBC&D is still my favourite, and chapter 1 played a great part on me remaining a fanboy despite its flaws. The most recent additions were both needed in a sense: Build King is a return to pure adventure and Sakamoto Days is a fresh breeze of novelty. Like many, I thought TPGW had a great first chapter, but unlike many, I found Bone Collection nice and funny, albeit with many cliches of the exorcism genre. Burn the Witch chapter 1 didn't convince me, but at the end of all 4 chapters I was totally hooked and in a general ranking would be higher. From Zipman downwards, we get into "more of the same" territory, with the exceptions of HighSchool Family (the reason being it stressed the concept of "family goes to high school" a little too much) and Ayakashi Triangle (the reason being ecchi is not my genre).

Would be a good idea since we have the first chapters of every 2020 series now.

1. Sakamoto Days
2. Time Paradox Ghost Writer
3. Phantom Seer
4. Moriking
5. Ayakashi Triangle
6. Zipman!!
7. Burn The Witch
8. Bone Collection
9. Me & Robocco
10. Magu-Chan
11. Mashle
12. Hard-Boiled Cop & Dolphin
13. Guardian of the Witch
14. Build King
15. Our Blood Oath
16. Undead X Unluck

High School Family just isn’t my thing, so I won’t rank it

Just the first chapter...

Great:
Mashle
Sakamoto Days
Burn the Witch

Good:
Hakaishin Magu-chan
Honomieru Shounen
Shakunetsu no Niraikanai
Build King
Zipman
Koukousei Kazoku

Meh:
Ayakashi Triangle
Agravity Boys
Shinrin Ouja Moriking
Boku to Roboco
Bokura no Ketsumei
Majo no Moribito
Time Paradox Ghostwriter
Undead Unluck
Bone Collection

If we go by just the first chapter, it was like this. It's fun to see this now, as Undead Unluck started really bad and now I love it. Mashle's first chapter was top tier. I don't enjoy reading it as much now, but it's still fun. Now I realize most of the stuff I didn't like got canceled.

Imo as of now though, all 3 are in the same tier level.
In my opinion, this topic of discussion has gone way beyond what’s necessary.

My ranking of the first chapters of each new series this year:

Great, invested from the beginning:
1. Burn the Witch
2. Phantom Seer
3. Sakamoto Days

Good, interested to continue:
4. Agravity Boys
5. Mashle
6. High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku
7. Me & Roboco

Fine, could go either way:
8. Our Blood Oath
9. Time Paradox Ghostwriter
10. Moriking
11. Undead Unluck
12. Magu-chan: God of Destruction
13. Build King
14. Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin

Bad, not my thing:
15. Ayakashi Triangle
16. Bone Collection

(Didn't read Zipman!! or Guardian of the Witch)

Sorry for the delay in the results, but here they are, thanks for your votes!
Thanks for posting the results - just to check, #48 still hasn't be posted yet? If so I might have missed it.

In no real order aside from the tiers. Including Jump+ series I read.

Great
Undead x Unluck (despite a very problematic start)
Mashle
Ghost Reaper Girl
Sakamoto Days (chapter 1)

Good
Agravity Boys
Ayakashi Triangle
Build King (chapter 1 and 2)
High School Family
Magu-chan
Ron Kamonoshi

Okay
Moriking
Bone Collection
Hardboiled Pig & Dolphin
Me & Roboco
Burn the Witch
Kaiju no. 8

Mediocre
Zipman
Guardian of the Witch
Time Paradox Ghostwriter

Bad
Phantom Seer
Our Blood Oath

I'd say it was a really great year tbh. Undead x Unluck, Mashle, and Ayakashi Triangle all three look like they're setting in to stick around for a long time. If Magu-chan, Build King, and Sakamoto Days all manage to stick around that might just be Jump's most successful year for new long-term series.
Probably breathing a huge sigh of relief after last year.

Just from the first chapter?

Great:
Sakamoto Days
Hakaishin Magu-chan

Good:
Burn the Witch
Honomieru Shounen
Majo no Moribito
Time Paradox Ghostwriter

Decent:
Mashle
Build King
Shinrin Ouja Moriking

Meh:
Shakunetsu no Niraikanai
Ayakashi Triangle
Zipman
Koukousei Kazoku

Bad:
Agravity Boys
Boku to Roboco
Bokura no Ketsumei
Undead Unluck
Bone Collection

Not a good year for me. Few, if any got considerably better in comparison to what I though of the first chapter, and many got worse.

Sakamoto Days feels like a cross between Mashle and Time for Torture, Princess. In a good way. I don't think we're going to see (many) people die in this series, it'll probably be an episodic thing where they use creative ways to fight off a new attacker every week. Which is fine by me, at least for now.

It's charming, funny, well-drawn, and I really like how nice the characters are despite, you know.

Moriking: That was rather fun. So, four more chapters then? (I'm actually going to miss this one. Sometimes.)

UU: First chapter in a while to pull me in so completely. Awesome.

BC: This made me laugh out loud. I love their interactions.

Phantom Seer: Yeah, I'd still like an explanation for that power. But good fight & strategies, and I like the pieces of character development thrown in.

Dr Stone: That's more like it! Very cool chapter, and we're on our way!

OBO: That fight wasn't half bad, and this villain is by far the most interesting we've had. But the characters all feel so lifeless, it's hard to get invested. Also I still don't understand what's the deal with those restrainers.

HSF: Was this supposed to be funny..? I honestly can't tell. But at least it wasn't annoying.

AB: *sigh* Remember when we first heard about that gender-bender premise and we were afraid it would basically turn the series into one long sexist joke? Yeeeah... And we get a list of girls with difficulty ratings to boot, because catalogue brides are funny, right?

The only good thing about this chapter was the 'how to time travel' discussion part (and the 'unknown' girl with sensitive skin, she was cool).

OP: Law! And over 30 other named characters who get about two panels each before they disappear again.

Mashle: That's a good lesson in politics. But please tell me we're not getting another six fights in row so soon.

Me & Roboco: Poor girl. Kudos for that flash of maturity at the end.

Yozakura: That was a really cute mini-story.

Magu-chan: What happened to their clothes? She looked cute. The jokes were nothing special, but the conversation was nice and really captured the mood.

Cop & Dolphin: That story was wild as usual, but I like the way it was structured, feeding us drips of information before showing the whole thing.

AT: The story is cute, those water fish are gorgeous, the jokes are sometimes funny and sometimes... ugh. Still not feeling very attached to the characters though.

The last two series are once again only in English on M+. I wonder why some get a Spanish translation right from the start and some never at all.

If sakamoto is a manga with episodic chapters it will be very bad for him.
First, we already have many series on the jump with this episodic structure. sakamoto has 7 chapters to show that it is worth following, with many readers dropping right in the third chapter.
He has to show more violence, he needs to stand out and shows a difference in these first chapters, otherwise he cancels.

I'm sure you can make more or less the same argument by comparing Toriko's one shot to it's first 2 chapters and find things you like a lot more in the one shot. It's not the best comparison, especially when there's like 2 chapters. At least let's leave this island and get introduced to the villians/combat system/etc before making these hasty conclusions about the series.

The main thing I like more about the one shot is the MC's design & the mecha houses. That's it and honestly there wasn't a whole lot other than that. Shimabu can easily give these duo MC's a makeover (which he will) and introduce mecha houses at some point so it's not a worry at all. I'm going to assume that if mecha houses are introduced they'll be like the pets in Toriko (Terry/Kiss/Quinn)
Sure, but... if I can't stand the characters or the humour, the villains/combat system won't matter. They'd have to change pretty much everything about the series to make it appeal to me, and I don't think that's going to happen.

I never read the Toriko one-shot, but I tried the series last week and quit after two hunts (about 7 chapters, I think). It wasn't awful or anything, but it couldn't keep my interest. I will give this series a few more chapters as well, but for now, it's not doing anything for me.

If sakamoto is a manga with episodic chapters it will be very bad for him.

Why would it be bad? Obviously he can't do the exact same thing every time, but there's nothing wrong with doing short stories. Only 5-7 of the current Jump manga are episodic, that's not too much.

And violence isn't the only way to appeal to people.

5-7 of the manga are episodic, it is very yes, and in the first chapters it is great to attract readers, you cannot have episodic chapters.
It is necessary to build a base and present elements to have something big in the future.

Even though violence is not the most important thing, it was undoubtedly what attracted the most attention.
Especially with comparisons with John Wick.

It can't be just isolated chapters.

It's been a while since I read some of these so my memories might be a bit foggy but here goes (not ordered within tiers)
Loved
Time Paradox Ghost Writer- Started very promisingly before throwing it all away a few chapters in.
Burn the Witch- Pretty self-explanatory
Build King- Maybe it was just good to see Shima back but I really liked ch1, and I look forward to where it goes next
Sakamoto Days- Very entertaining for just one chapter and set things up pretty well.
Really Liked
Moriking- I quite liked the humor early on in Moriking, even though my opinion of it has lowered over time
Magu Chan- Cute and funny, glad to see it hasn't gotten stale yet
Phantom Seer- Ch1 did a good job at introducing things and showcasing the incredible artl
Liked
Undead- Aside from that scene in ch1 I really did like it and it did a good job at setting up the crazy of it's world
Roboco- I'm proud to say things have improved since ch1, but that's not to say it started out bad
HSF- Set the tone up of the series pretty well
No Strong Feelings
Mashle- Wasn't a big fan of it early on, glad to see it improve into something I enjoy more
Ayakashi- Ch1 was fine but I didn't get particularly invested in the series for a few chapters
Disliked a little
Zipman- I remember the brother's dynamic being kinda awkward but ch1 was fine if not somewhat boring
Agravity- I vaguely remember a lot of people being worried about how the premise would go involving the genar division from the one shot and that it wasn't as bad as expected but also nothing spectacular
Guardian of the Witch- Had potential, fell apart after ch1 though
Disliked
Bone Collection- Boring and unoriginal from the first chapter
Dolphin- I may be confusing it with a latter chapter but there was some scenes involving behavior I did not find funny at all
Blood Oath- Bad and uninspired

Assassination classroom had a different concept than in the first chapter.

Reborn, was lucky to be saved after 60 chapters, is not a good example to be used. it was a miracle reborn to have survived so long.

It is not because it worked in Assassination classroom that it will work in Sakamoto.

Also, if Reborn! wasn't popular in Japan from the get-go then why else would Viz have such a strong early promotional campaign for a gag manga when they first brought it to the USA? Isn't it possible Amano just wanted to work on a battle manga instead with the cast and world she had already created?
