I have a bitched about this forever. Nobody cares about it anymore. Toriyama has gotten away with such bullshit that people actually expected from him."But It's Dragon ball…" And it's such garbage. No other author could get away with this mess. People tore and continue to tear Kubo apart for a third of the shit that Toriyama pulls. (For the record I'm not and never was a bleach fan)I swear Akira & DBZ is the only Manga/Anime that gets away with this s**^+....
It's a big discrepancy; X That seems the only way I personally could make sense of it. But we never know this may get cleaned up in upcoming chapters.
It's utterly infuriating.

The thing about this though, at least in Dragon ball collecting the Dragon balls was a feat. It took an entire arc for that stuff to happen. When the afterlife was introduced, it wasn't something that was in any way constantly in our face that is to say it wasn't something that was easily reached and tangible.Well, the Dragon Balls were introduced in the first volume of Dragon Ball, the afterlife a little later with Baba the Witch, so more or less what you wrote should be read like "DB is a manga without any thrill", and it simply isn't true. I mean, apart from the battles during the Tenkaichi almost every battle was till death. Goku VS Piccolo. Goku VS Vegeta. Goku VS Freeza. Are these battles without thrill? Come on.
That all changed with DBZ, especially after the Freeza saga. The Namekian Dragon balls were introduced (far more broken if more monkeys paw-ish than the earth Dragon balls), Goku could instantly teleport from one place to another, events lost their urgency and consequence.
Example: the boo saga after Vegeta blew himself up. Everyone was sitting there crying over his and *Gohan's death. Why though? Yeah, the death of a loved one is very traumatic and very sad. That alone is something to cry about, but in the Dragon ball world where people can be revived and literally communicate with the dead, what the hell are you crying for? Even if they didn't have access to the earth Dragon balls because Boo was on a rampage or whatever, uhhh Namek?
Those Dragon balls still exist. The only person in that group that had any reason to cry was Videl who didn't know them, and didn't know their adventures. Had no idea about the Dragon balls etc. To her, when someone died they died and you can't get them back. And she was just starting to get a lady boner for Gohan.
Everyone else however, among some who had come back multiple times…
I will admit that fights can be exciting for what they are but consequences to said fights are diminished when you have magical items that are no longer a feat and a half to collect that can reverse anything that comes about due to said fight.
