Gildarts definitely has a upper hand. We have seen G. Serena get serious while fighting the 4 Kings. But I do not have a memory of Gildarts getting really serious in any of his fights. Gildarts takes this mid-high diff.

Gonna put it as a tie for now. Gildarts just hasn't shown any impressive feats that would warrant putting him above a fairly high-tiered Spriggan, and he hasn't received any hype apart from editor's notes that get things wrong all the time. If he proves himself later then I'll be happy to change my answer but I'm not just going to give him free points just because he was the strongest a couple of arcs ago.

God Serena is really overrated... Gildarts wrecks with Easy-difficulty...

Gildarts both. Forget titles (they don't mean shit), Gildarts is Ishgar's strongest mage. As much as @grey matter wants it to be true, Gildarts never said GS was his equal.

GS is overrated.

I'd go with Gildarts or stalemate.
IMO portrayal was definitely there, and feats don't really contradict either

Gildarts said the real God Serena was powerful and he would've been eager to see who'd win between the two of them, so I think regardless of who wins, they can be considered CLOSE.

If we look at their stats, I know we haven't seen much of God Serena, but seeing how he got 1-shotted by Acnologia, I'd say he's less durable than Gildarts (who at least survived such an encounter). I KNOW Acno didn't take Gildarts seriously since he had no-link with dragons, but when he attacked Tenrou Island, Gildarts said he wasn't using a thousandth of the power he saw him do, implying that while Acno didn't take him as seriously as a dragon, he did more than just toying with him (don't ask why he'd treat Gildarts differently, Gildarts confirmed he did). Plus I consider Alvalez Gildarts much stronger than Pre-Tenrou Gildarts (before he was wounded), while Acno can't have made much progress in 8 years since he's over 300 years old (thus anything he did to train, he probably did during his centuries of existence as well, I don't see what 8 more years would change).

Also, we haven't seen ALL of God Serena's dragon slaying magics, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them focused on defense, but Gildarts also has a defensive Crush "barrier", plus his Crush magic can counter (or at least weaken) a lot of spells since it can destroy both physical matter and magical energy.
So all in all, Gildarts seems to have better defenses.

In terms of offense however, God Serena obviously has more range and AoE, more versatility since he has 8 different elements, and easily overpowering the 4 Gods of Ishtar proves he isn't a weakling. His 8 dragons attack should be much more powerful if it was the REAL him who cast it (not his Historia), and he probably has a DF mode (which likely triples his power like it does with Natsu). Gildarts may have highly destructive magic, but I don't think he can reach that level.

MY opinion is stalemate or Serena extreme-diff, but knowing Mashima, if this fight really did happen, he would've made Gildarts win extreme diff like with Laxus VS Jura.

Problem is Mashima rarely kills off good guys especially those who’ve been in the story for awhile. So Gildarts would of survived even if he was way weak than Serena

Also not true. Crush is the most offensive magic in the series.

But he wasn't.

He did, right before stomping Historia God Serena.

That was never stated, and if it was true, Zeref would've focused on Crush magic to find a way of dying, he would've made END a Crush demon instead of a Fire demon. Afterall END's purpose WAS to bypass Zeref's immortality and kill him, so why not giving him the most destructive magic to do so? Anyway I said God Serena had more RANGE and AREA OF EFFECT, it doesn't necessarily mean the DAMAGE dealt is higher.

No he did not. That was a fan translation.

That first sentence makes no sense. Crush has shown more destructive properties and AoE than any other. Gildarts crushes an entire village just by falling down casually.

Zeref has nothing to do with this. Using your logic, Zeref would've given Natsu every magic in the book.

Okay, thanks for clarifying it.

Can you remind me of Gildarts's biggest AoE feat? I do recall him dealing heavy damage several times, but not on a particularily huge zone. His magic seems mostly to COMPRESS energy into "square lines" or other small shapes that can slice almost anything, not to EXPAND it into village-sized attacks. (don't think I'm saying he's purely lame at AoE, I do recall him destroying a whole cathedral in Alvalez, but it's not that impressive for that arc).

No-need to give him ALL the magics, but if the point was to reach the highest level of destructiveness possible (so huge it can bypass Zeref's immortality), wouldn't it make sense to start focusing on "the most offensive magic in the series" as you call it? My opinion is just that there's NO "best" magic for offense or any other specific purpose. Sure, some are better for offence than others and Crush is one of them, but there's no-true "best" of all.
