Ok, I finished watching it. I use my own criteria when it comes to comic/manga/book adaptations. Please, prefix all of these with a "In my opinion".
Photography (And Camera): 4/10. The weaker point of this show is how stiff the camera was in all action moments. Luffy's fruit should have displayed a bit more dynamism, either by accompanying the movement or trying to give weight to hits with movement. It was also darker than needed to be, One Piece should be more "Pushing Daises" quality rather than "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo/Teen Titans". I understand that they went with familiarity with "Pirates of the Caribbean", but even they used a more saturated palette.
Pacing: 4/10. The second weakest point of the show. Dragged with Garp, shrank with Strawhats. The rhythm was all over the place, and some tense scenes were cut (Like with Buffy) with scenes that were just watering the emotion. They could have been grouped in different moments of the episode with ease, as they do not relate to each other and most were not drawing any parallels (Besides Zoro's flashback and MAYBE Luffy's)
Plot & Script: 7/10. I like the changes they made, with the sole exception of killing Merry. I liked Usopp kissing Kaya, Kaya in general, and how fast we were skipping some of the villains of this arc. Baratie could have been longer, yes, but it did not take away from the main points of East Blue. This is a very hard arc to adapt because manga tends to have a more structured introduction for characters which is not how Western media is consumed.
I didn't like the things Garp said, because they felt very out of character all the time. Only at the end, it reflected a closer representation, but I don't think keeping this to the end served the goal they were after. All the other changes on the script, like making Sanji less of a degenerate and more like a gentleman, I really liked.
Or at least, they didn't bother me, like replacing parts of the pirate crew, making Cocoyasi village unaware of Nami's decision, or removing the Usopp crew. I why they cut those out, even if I would actually like it more with them.
Style & Design: 6/10. I feel they should have opted for the more graphical parts of Oda's design. I will start with Going Merry, there was already a version of it with a perfect mast. This one, more realistic, in the end, hurts more because it detracts from the importance of "comic" aspects of this manga (Which we all know WHY they are essential in future arcs). A more pronounced change would have looked better for the camera like with the Mermen.
FX: 8/10. A lot more decent than I was expecting, practical effects served well for the most part. I would have liked a bit more effort for Haki moments and Mihawk's impressive slicing, but oh well.
Acting: 9/10. The strongest factor of this live-action is how good the Strawhats are for this role. A special note to Mihawk and Zeff which looked and portrayed their characters perfectly. I was unsure of Coby at first, but in the end, I thought the characterization was perfect. There are a lot of moments in which He's acting his role even when not focused. Same with Zoro.
Not the same for the child actors but hey, they are child actors. It's fine.
Music: 9/10. Almost perfect ambientation. Bin's sake tore my eye a bit and I was giggling a lot when I heard Aurora singing.
Direction: 6/10. I can tell that the production and direction loved the source material, but sadly I think that led to some bad decisions. Manga panels should not be replicated when it comes to movement, because they cannot convey movement as well as with a camera. I hope this gets better in the second second.
Overall, I liked it. Hoping for a stronger second season. I'm very happy that is leading the charts now because it means more and this show deserves it.
