Honestly, Netflix and Oda did well by taking chances with their choices for this show and it delivered.

Inaki Godoy, really captures Luffy in a brilliant performance and it goes well with the other supporting characters. The key part that really brings out the best in this show is “chemistry” period.

The homework done for this first season speaks for itself in so many ways. They also, did some neat visuals in this including the bounty posters that follow the introductions for the characters.

Overall, Season 1 is great experience for anyone who isn’t familiar with the material and if you are fan, I think you’ll love it. I suspect if Season 2 gets greenlit, they’ll go in a broader direction and hopefully we get Alabasta.

I am getting really really sick of the Nojiko situation. The actress is okay, heck her skins color actually work great in term of family is more than blood. I have more of a problem with the writing. To see folks getting unhinge over her skins color is getting annoying. It is part of the anti woke trend that I am annoyed with. Reminded me of when Spiderman Homecoming came out, and people focus on ultimately irrelevant shit like how woke/diverse his high school was. And in the grand scheme of thing, she is such a minor character. Not even appearing latter on.

That and all the stupid comments about Nami's boobs. I more worry of her age like some on this thread, consider how long One Piece goes. And even then she can't help that.

Finished the rest of the show and overall loved the live action. It really is the best live action I've seen of an anime and captured the spirit of the original work pretty well. If I were to rate the show I'd give it 7.5/10. Strangely enough some of the things that hurt it for me are things that are also trying to stick true to the story of the manga like orange/blue hair, the eccentric eye color and facial hair for Mihawk etc all captured the original work really well but when seen in a live action version to added a bit of tacky quality to it for me. Hopefully gets renewed for second season so we can see Alabasta and maybe Ace!

(Episode 1: Romance Dawn - 7.5/10
Episode 2: The Man in the Straw Hat - 8/10
Episode 3: Tell No Tales - 6.5/10
Episode 4: The Pirates Are Coming - 7/10)

Episode 5: Eat at Baratie - 8/10

Garp finally had some more Garp-ish moments. Still very torn about how he's being utilized in the series but might be starting to grow on me a little.

Loved Sanji's introduction, heck, every scene with Sanji in it. He's perfect. Zeff is great. The Baratie is astonishing.
Luffy's "don't let some old man stand in the way of your dream" to Sanji in the same ep as the flashback with Garp destroying his first ship (and damaging his new one), great way to make a connection between the two.
Mihawk is flamboyant and pompous and I don't mind it at all.
The crew getting more serious interactions like Zoro and Nami's drinking scene, and the part before Zoro goes to fight Mihawk, is definitely needed when they don't have as much time to sprinkle their "bonding" in over the course of a lot more episodes.
The way the Warlords were explained and integrated felt slightly changed from the manga but again not a bad change at this stage.
The Zoro and Mihawk duel was damn near perfect. I do wish some more of the dialogue from the manga had been included, I get that it might have been a bit too melodramatic but I think with how Mihawk was portrayed it would have worked.

Anyway, alot of this episode is a prime example of how the tone NEEDS to be different in a medium like this. Very solid episode, second best one so far in my opinion.

Your point about the old men flew over my head when I watched it. I am watching Morj's review. And in retrospect, I am way too harsh. I put the actions as good/great. But in reality they are excellence in compare with other tv shows and even movies. Morj used Zoro vs Mr 7 and compare it to Mountain vs VIper in game of thrones. Minus the stories/emotions. Zoro vs Mr 7 was better, Morj concluded. And he is right. Like with Daredevil, a lot of the actions were in the dark. And even a movie I watched recently like Mission Impossible. There were so many cuts because the actors/actresses can't fight. There is a particular scene on the bridge that is the key emotional moment in that movie if people get my reference. Compare to a blockbuster, and One Piece Live action still does the action better. And here I am grading it a good/great because it isn't as good as the anime. Hmmmm...

Honestly, scenes like that, or Nami picking on Luffy because he didn't stop the duel with Mihawk, seemed like cheap teen drama stuff to me. But in fact it would be the target that Netflix productions are aiming for
I thought you did not want to watch the show? ^^

Ok, I finished watching it. I use my own criteria when it comes to comic/manga/book adaptations. Please, prefix all of these with a "In my opinion".

Photography (And Camera): 4/10. The weaker point of this show is how stiff the camera was in all action moments. Luffy's fruit should have displayed a bit more dynamism, either by accompanying the movement or trying to give weight to hits with movement. It was also darker than needed to be, One Piece should be more "Pushing Daises" quality rather than "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo/Teen Titans". I understand that they went with familiarity with "Pirates of the Caribbean", but even they used a more saturated palette.

Pacing: 4/10. The second weakest point of the show. Dragged with Garp, shrank with Strawhats. The rhythm was all over the place, and some tense scenes were cut (Like with Buffy) with scenes that were just watering the emotion. They could have been grouped in different moments of the episode with ease, as they do not relate to each other and most were not drawing any parallels (Besides Zoro's flashback and MAYBE Luffy's)

Plot & Script: 7/10. I like the changes they made, with the sole exception of killing Merry. I liked Usopp kissing Kaya, Kaya in general, and how fast we were skipping some of the villains of this arc. Baratie could have been longer, yes, but it did not take away from the main points of East Blue. This is a very hard arc to adapt because manga tends to have a more structured introduction for characters which is not how Western media is consumed.

I didn't like the things Garp said, because they felt very out of character all the time. Only at the end, it reflected a closer representation, but I don't think keeping this to the end served the goal they were after. All the other changes on the script, like making Sanji less of a degenerate and more like a gentleman, I really liked.

Or at least, they didn't bother me, like replacing parts of the pirate crew, making Cocoyasi village unaware of Nami's decision, or removing the Usopp crew. I why they cut those out, even if I would actually like it more with them.

Style & Design: 6/10. I feel they should have opted for the more graphical parts of Oda's design. I will start with Going Merry, there was already a version of it with a perfect mast. This one, more realistic, in the end, hurts more because it detracts from the importance of "comic" aspects of this manga (Which we all know WHY they are essential in future arcs). A more pronounced change would have looked better for the camera like with the Mermen.

FX: 8/10. A lot more decent than I was expecting, practical effects served well for the most part. I would have liked a bit more effort for Haki moments and Mihawk's impressive slicing, but oh well.

Acting: 9/10. The strongest factor of this live-action is how good the Strawhats are for this role. A special note to Mihawk and Zeff which looked and portrayed their characters perfectly. I was unsure of Coby at first, but in the end, I thought the characterization was perfect. There are a lot of moments in which He's acting his role even when not focused. Same with Zoro.

Not the same for the child actors but hey, they are child actors. It's fine.

Music: 9/10. Almost perfect ambientation. Bin's sake tore my eye a bit and I was giggling a lot when I heard Aurora singing.

Direction: 6/10. I can tell that the production and direction loved the source material, but sadly I think that led to some bad decisions. Manga panels should not be replicated when it comes to movement, because they cannot convey movement as well as with a camera. I hope this gets better in the second second.

Overall, I liked it. Hoping for a stronger second season. I'm very happy that is leading the charts now because it means more and this show deserves it.

Just ignore or block Franz, don't feed the troll. Report if necessary.

I had my second rewatch. I liked some bits even more (eps 1-2 and 5-6), but was bit more annoyed by other aspects (editing, changes to Arlong Park). I think my review is still a solid 8, though there is some bias.

Might make a more detailed rank later, but episodes 5 and 2 were the best, 3 was the worst.

And who would be trolling?

Looks like the live action has beaten the Netflix record that Stranger Things S4 and Wednesday set and has now officially hit #1 in TV Shows in 84 countries simultaneously (previous record was 83). This is not an easy record to break and to be compared to two other huge shows is an amazing achievement for something that came from a manga/anime. Congratulations to Oda on this major success and hope it sparked some creative juices in him for what he ends up doing next in the manga. I'm sure for him, having spent decades drawing this, he must have imagined how things might look in live action and in a weird way it might be somewhat of a personal career dream come true for him. For all we know this could be the start of eventual marvel/dc level budget live action movies (especially if the ATLA live action also manages to succeed).

Pretty much same for me, maybe 6 for episode 3, and 7.5 the 7th and 8th.
I really enjoyed it. some changes but pretty much understandable, they mostly made sense. Actors were great, best performance to me was Mihawk, he was perfect ine very single point. Shanks, Zeff , Buggy were awesome too. Regarding Strawhats crew Taz was amazing as Sanji, that smile, that allure... he nailed the role perfectly. the guy btw went full training (as a cook and fighter). otherwise Nami was really great. All actually were stunning but those 2 amazed me. Usopp actor is so handsome !

What do you meant about the mermen? For direction, I wonder if you have a specific example. I may like ep 5 more upon rewatch, especially, how Mihawk's attitude in ep 6 made him less of a lap dog. But what felt out of place was Zoro after he got defeated. Many people focus on Mackenyu not crying. I supposed that would make the character better and seen a tad less stoic. However, that wasn't what irk me. What irk me is that they tried to replicated the manga. When he put his hand on his forehead and put that sword up. It felt really weird. I kinda wish they did their own version and what ever felt the most natural to Mackenyu.

As I let the show sink in there are a lot of subtle things about the live action that brought out interesting aspects of the characters - Zoro is a depressed alcoholic, Usopp is a a slick scam artist type, Nami is just tragic af especially seeing it for reals, Luffy is definitely eccentric in a goofy way and my boy Sanji actually was suave and charming! Mihawk and Buggy were the other highlights for me and played their characters perfectly. It's going to be interesting to see how Smoker and Tashigi are since we are definitely going to see a lot of them in season 2. The casting for Crocodile is going to be important since he needs to be really intimidating in a cold/ruthless way.

I am blurring all the comments in a blob right now. People on this thread (may even be you lol) or elsewhere also point out how shitty Yasopp is. Especially he was just island away and not visit his wife/son. There was a part where he is kinda sad when he realize Luffy was hanging out with his dad. Since you mention the subtle things.

As for slick. Maybe. He didn't fool no Baratie staff. It was Nami that did hush hush money that got them a table.
