In Chapter 166, we see Makarov tell Gildarts that even he couldn't do the 100 year quest at Mt. Zonia
So who did Markarov send on the quest before????
It was a 100 years quest.... Gildarts was the first person to survive.
In 100 years, other fairy tail mages were sent.Who do you send on a 100 year quest?
Strong wizards and Acnologia killed them... all.
Nobody ever returned.
SO WHO DIED?
And we know from Acno vs Igneel, Serena, and Gildarts that he aims for the stomach/internal organs.
Like the scar on Eileen/Irene's stomach.
Erza was named Scarlet because of her hair color. Nobody knew her last name thus Jellal named her. She didn't even know her last name, or maybe it was suppose to be hidden.
What we do know is that Rob was a friend of Erza's; who nurtured her like a grandfather. And Rob was a member of Team Markarov.
All of Makarov's team went to do special things.
Makarov - Guldmaster.
Bob - Master of BP
Polyusica - batty old healer that lives in the woods yet still helps the guild.
Goldmine - Master of QC
Yajima - Wizard council
Except Rob. He gave up magic for some reason. And he took a special interest in
Erza, not Jellal or the other children.

Maybe because he recognized her?
My theory is that Irene and her hubby went to Mt. Zonia when Erza was a baby on the 100 year quest. They were S class mages of Fairy Tail 26-27 years ago.
Acnologia killed the husband who sacrificed himself for his wife, Irene. She was wounded and didn't return home because of the hole in her stomach. Zeref or August found Irene and healed her which accounts for the wound she has on her stomach.
Zeref has been actively looking for strong wizards. And we also know August fears Acnologia. And he protects comrades and his default stage seems fairly nice.
So Irene would be about 46-47 (around the same age Jude, Ivan, Gildarts, Silver, Layla would be at this time)... Still looking sexy af... btw.
Irene might have a personal grudge against Achnologia like Silver had for End.
If she was already an S class mage of fairy tail and she has had 26 of preparing to kill Acnologia... She would be powerful (plus the whole related to Erza). Just think if Erza prepared 26 years to kill Ankhseram... (wouldn't mean she could but think who could defeat her?)
She may not even know Erza is alive because of the TOH incident and the destroying of Rosemary village.
Really this was the time period that was not nakama like for fairy tail. This would have been the same time Ivan had implanted lacrimas into Laxus and got kicked from the guild. It also ties into the fact that someone in Alvarez found out about Fairy Heart but were held back by FACE and Etherion canon 3 years before Chapter 1. I always thought it was Ivan (because of Zeref's spriggan) or Serena because he was from Ishgar and looked like Yuri. Now I think it was Irene that told Alvarez about Fairy Heart to
defeat Acnologia.
Irene might have even told Neinhart about her daughter who was suppose to be dead. This would have been 26 years ago and Neinhart looks to be about 30 (older than Brandish/Dimaria/that group)
Neinhart's reaction to Erza was mirror of Keyes reaction to Gray... "You are Silver's...."
Irene doesn't want to attack her old country. She really just wants to kill Acnologia. Like Silver doing evil things for Tartaros. The end justifies the means.
Brandish didn't have much connection to Irene, but it seems August was a friend of Brandish's mother.
So Zeref could have take in children much like Fairy tail did. Irene raised some who are loyal to her (
the ones Zeref doesn't control - he mentioned this specifically). And August raised/taught the others (
the one's loyal to Zeref).
Who is Loyal to Zeref? August. Invel. Azir (who is the prime minister's grandson). Wharl. Serena. Dimaria. Brandish. Basically the ones who came to the meeting. And we know Jacob respects August to the point he went ahead of August.
So Zeref's talk to Brandish may had nothing to do with Lucy. It might have been about her loyalties because Brandish has a good heart (as sensed by Natsu). And Zeref wanted to see which Spriggans he could trust to follow orders.
Already Irene is doing something weird.
Who flat out didn't come to the meeting? Neinhart... Irene... The two that are in the north with Irene...
The group that was in the meeting with Zeref seems close. August seems to be older but all the others were young. August protected Azir and Jacob. August seems to be respected by both Jacoband Brandish.
Azir didn't recognize Erza. Brandish doesn't know Irene. Jacob got mad when Serena died, and when Brandish/Marin was captured mentioned Dimaria giving him hell. Azir, Dimaria, Wharl, Brandish, Serena seem to be close enough to interact on a friendly competitive bases.
