Discussion Spriggan 12 General Thread

To be honest, I'm starting to feel fairly disappointed with the Spriggans. Some have put in poor shows, like Wahl getting beaten by what I can only label as an asspull, Bradman getting punched to death by DF Gajeel out of nowhere, Invel getting overwhelmed by PoF and to top it all off the former-least disappointing spriggan Irene getting tricked by Mavis. Its some little things and some big things with the Spriggans that are really leaving me feeling like they could've been better villains, but due to some poor execution they've been underwhelming, and its tarnished the arc. Its just how I'm feeling about them right now, and to me it is frustrating how Irene was fooled so easily by Mavis.

Agreed, the problem isn't with the Spriggans themselves IMO, it's that they get hyped up by beating side guilds and then go onto:

a) Get absolutely trashed from the start (Enhanced Neinhart)
b) Dominate their fights for a majority and then get beat by a random power (Bradman suffered this)
c) Display parity in their fight and then get beat (Wahl)

In short, they're underwhelming because they're forced to lose (bar August and Irene) so long as their opponent has an FT mark on them. This is just my take on it of course, but it's starting to feel ridiculous when the uber-hyped GoI get trashed by Goddy but then Base Natsu two-shots someone who is supposedly comparable to him. Also this isn't a complaint specifically about Natsu, other protagonists are guilty of this too, I just think Natsu's is the best example.

I agree that the 12 have been disappointing. But it's not their powers, it's the way they've been done in on several occasions. Some have been fine. These 12 people would destroy anyone from the Baram Alliance, yet some of those guys posed a hell of a lot more a threat in their relative arcs.

Invel was probably hit by a fair bit of PoF - with the missus 'dying'. Either positive or negative emotions did it - we don't know - which is why I call it messy. If it's the latter, then Gray may have somewhat of a powerup.

I'm going to give a few L awards away

The most trolled S12 by far is Jacob. That fanservice weakness is ridiculous. Even though his defeat is understandable - his virgin eyes are not.

The most unfortunate S12 DiMaria. We've seen what she can do - near kill a S12 in an instant. Mari had to deal with Ultear existing in the jail of time (fanservice tick), "Third Origin", and God Slaying magic. 3 huge things go against her. Runner up is probably God Serena who had an untimely meeting with a murderous Acnologia - swap in Natsu, Gajeel or Laxus in his spot and they die too.

The most underwhelming S12 is probably Brandish. OP magic, but she's had the most losses. One of them was against dispersed pollen

The most brittle S12 is Neinhart. Beaten by 1-2-shots. Granted they were beaten by top tiers, but it's quite obvious his physicals suck. I do pardon Neinhart though, neither Jellal or Natsu soloed him and his Historia's - that would be a tough match.

The true downfall of the 12s were being hyped up to be on the same status as God Serena is where I think Hiro went wrong with... with Tartaros Franmalth said that the 9DG can all destroy villages. Whoopie dee do. But at least it's not as crazy as being someone who can match the strongest mage on Ishgar. I honestly like they all have op magics but obviously it can be two sides to a coin, which we've seen. The most clowned 12s are Jacob and Neinhart no question. Hiro even admitted Jacob's character could of been better but plot wouldn't let him prosper. I really have no problems with the matchups cause most of the 12s were 2 vs 1 or more. Erza, Laxus, Jellal, Natsu are all consider low to mid tier Spriggan level so no real problems with the outcomes of their battles (Laxus vs. Wall was terrible but no problem with Laxus solo'ing Wall is what I mean). Still, can't help but to not like them, one thing I deff give Hiro credit for is changing the dynamic up with them, having not all meat puppets for Zeref cause if you look over the series, the only other villain group not to be like that were the OS, which is why these two groups were my favorite villain groups. Good points include magics, designs, personalities, freedom they're given. Bad points is the wonky power scaling and the disrespect they've gotten. Just wish some of the battles were better, and more losses of Ishgar's side cause if they were this would probably be the best arc to me, but overall I'm still enjoying it highly cause I got alot of new favs (Larcade, DiMaria, God Serena, Brandish) from this arc so hey, you take the good with the bad. If they win or something tilts the war heavy in their favorite is the outcome I don't think anyone would be mad. Endgame is FH so we'll see

Plot development is actually a good thing...I think you mean Plot Induced Stupidity :P

Although I agree the Jacob and Neinhart fights are the worst (Spriggans in general have terrible fights and are stupid villains), I'll have to disagree on the Gray part. It did have PoF. Invel was overwhelming Gray at first but then Gray proceeds to stomp him into oblivion.

Invel was clearly overwhelmed by the Power of Friendship. Ice Lock only caused the double suicide moment between Gray and Juvia, and broke when neither of them had actually died yet (which it shouldn't have, so thats a bit of plot induced stupidity or whatever there), but it most certainly didn't send Gray into his enraged PoF state. What did that was Juvia's "death", not the actual magic, and you can't put those feelings down to Ice Lock when it isn't in effect anymore. The point is that Gray literally just overwhelmed Invel with punches, something he shouldn't of been able to do with what we'd seen from him. There's nothing else that could justify Gray going from a bit of a struggle against Invel to literally punching him around, no magic used whatsoever until the Devil Slayer technique at the end, so it is clearly PoF.

Yes, I didn't include them as my paragraph was just that, one in general only touching on a few of the low points of the arc. Yes, Natsu & Lucy vs Jacob had some Plot Induced Stupidy there, but then again so do a fair few fights in Fairy Tail. Natsu vs Neinhart didn't really involve plot armour like you're suggesting, we've seen that Neinhart has poor durability and that Natsu has a high amount of attack power, so Neinhart getting taken out relatively easily by powerful attacks shouldn't be that surprising. If you want the most nonsense from a fight this arc, it'd definitely have to be Laxus' Red Lighting from Laxus vs Wahl, because "Lightning that transcends lighting" does nothing to explain how the spell, which was lightning, would've affected Wahl whatsoever.

I enjoy August incredibly simply because he's calm and direct. No hoofing around, gotta kill and get the job done. FUCK YEAH! Despite his age, dude's dangerous.

Irene because she makes my rod explode with happiness, but more because I like how sadistic and evil she is, along with her power and calm. I don't understand why she's called arrogant, but nonsense people, so nonsense opinions.

Was gonna put Invel down, but now he makes me flaccid.

I think, Irene will be:

The anime is Umineko. Before it's too late, it contains gore (blood, sadistic, brutality, etc) so be careful if you want to watch it

In that video I just linked, Beatrice's seiyuu is Sayaka Ohara. Sayaka is Erza's seiyuu as well. I think she would fit Irene's voice, just with a more arrogant tone/pitch.

So we have August, Invel, DiMaria, Brandish (?) know/aware of Natsu's real identity as END. Not hard to believe, they're all close to Zeref but at the same time someone like August or Invel are the more likely ones to know everything as we've seen. I find it dope Zeref shares stuff like that with them. That's a tight bond they all know about END. We've seen them know his true identity, his lover, his brother and his identity.. what else did Zeref share with the 12s?
