When situations have changed in a location, it's best that one moves...which may even be a rule when living on the savannahs and jungles of Africa...

No. 18: The Move of the Ta-chan Household

13.
Narrator: It’s only a small distance, but the Ta-chan household is going to move their dwelling.
Map:
-Mountain Area: Mt. Moutak
-River Area: Chinkono River
-Lake Area: Lake Oman
-Caption Above River: Place We Live Now
-Caption Below Lake: Place I Think We’ll Live This Time
(TN: Though I doubt it really would matter, the “names” here do seem to have some silly relevance in regards to what’s going on here, the most obvious being the “Chinkono River”, with “chinko” being slang for “Penis”. On the other hand, “Moutaku” could possibly be a pun: “Moutaku” could be a reference to “Mou Takutou”, the Japanese name for Mao Zedong, controversial Communist revolutionary of China)
Narrator: It’s because Jane has completely eaten up the fruit of a 3km radius, which is centered by their dwelling.
Jane: That’s a complaint!!

14.
Jane: We’re really moving. What a pain.
Ta-chan: We go to the Chinkono River which is 5km ahead, and from when we get onto the raft that’s there, we’ll reach it during today.
Jane: Now that he mentions it, we got onto a raft on the Chinkono River and arrived at here during our newlywed period…
Jane: Wa—it’s wide. Here will be our home.
Jane: Well, Ta-chan, from where to where will be our belongings?
Ta-chan: Belongings? Are we roping this off? Up to very, very far away belongs to Ta-chan.
Jane: Hee—Ta-chan is a great land owner. This is more and more dreamy.
Ta-chan: So then, for the moment, I’ll do some scent-marking demarcation.

15.
Jane: What’s scent-marking?
SFX: Jabibibibi……jabibibi…….jabibibi…
Narrator: Scent-Marking: Applying urine to things that stand out like trees so other animals will know with scent what you’ve marked off. The pissing of a dog is also scent-marking.
Jane: But the scent will be taken if rain comes down.
Ta-chan: I’ll pee in the same places every day.
Ta-chan: But that’s a tad-bit lonely, since there are many memories of my five years that I’ve spent with you.
Jane: For example: a large tree that you dried out with pee.
(TN: The whole “scent marking” bit ended up using several different words for the same thing, so I ended up translating them in different manners to sort of show some variation. For example:
-“Jou”: The first “urine”, it used the kanji that was directly for “urine”, thus I kept it proper.
-“Oshikko”: The second “urine” that I made “pissing” as in the “pissing of a dog”
-“Shonben” – the third one which is typically used in Japanese which I use as the generic term: “pee”.)

16.
Ta-chan: Alright, let’s go!! Etekichi, Gori-san, depart with energy!!
Caption: Etekichi, who actually has sociably given up on his wife Eteko three days ago and has run away from her.
Caption: Putting Up a Map of the New Address
SFX: Shinmiri (Solemn)
Song:
The Africa Song (Africa no Uta)
Creator: Tokuhiro Masaya

Africa Africa
When I First Came To This Land
I Want to Explore It~~~
Africa Africa
The Native People Are All Naked
And Live in Peace
Africa Africa
I’ve Discovered It
I Want To Explore It~~

“AH, IT’S FREED PENORS”*
Ah-Free-kah Ah-Free-kah
(I want this to be sung in tune to Yuming’s “Ano Hi ni Kaeritai” (I Want To Return to That Day))
*This portion of the speech gets shouted by girls
(TN: A couple things to try and better understand some of what’s going on with this song:
-The final portion of the song which goes “Ah-Free-kah” is intentional, but this was the only way to make it work in English. The final part in English actually goes “Ah Furi ka”, which more translates into “Ah, are they free?”, but it was done in a way to make it sound like the “Africa” akin to the other parts of the song.
-“Yuumin” refers to “Yumi Matsutoya” a popular singer-song writer who originally emerged in the mid-1970s and had huge commercial success in the mid 1980s and early 1990s. “Ano Hi ni Kaeritai”, one of her most notable hits, was released in 1975 as the theme song to the TBS drama “Katei no Himitsu” and became her first number one single.)

17.
Ta-chan: Ah, Helen-chan has come.
Helen: Sorry. I was late and though I did promise I would go to be a helper for the move (Ha—ha--)
Ta-chan: It’s fine; since we don’t have considerable luggage.
Helen: But I’m happy: the move this time is going to be really near my home. I’m glad—
Jane: He—
Caption: Hearing for the First Time
Helen: If it’s good, can’t you ride in my car? You’ll reach your place of destination in 5 hours by car and going down on a raft is unsophisticated like your primitives.
Jane: There’s significance in our moving to a place that’s going down the Chinkono River!
SFX: Zui

18.
Caption: Chinkono River
Ta-chan: Since we’re making a raft, I’ll need the help of Etekichi and Gori-san.
SFX: Gu
SFX: Heki
Jane: Your idiotic power as typical; you haven’t changed even a bit from long ago.

19.
Jane: Now that you mention it, we made a raft like that and went down the Chinkono River during our newlywed period. (flashback Jane) Will it be fine even if I get on?
Ta-chan: Be calm. Get on quickly.
Ta-chan: Um—it’s done, Jane. Can’t you get on?
Jane: What, isn’t this the same raft as five years ago? That’s not art.
Caption: She truly was nostalgic and was a tad bit glad.
SFX: Buku buku buku buku
Narrator: Ultimately, the move came to be suspended.

20.
2. Happiness
I’m happy when I drink alcohol……
I’m happy in sharing in the lowering of the cost with the consumption tax…
Tokuhiro: I’m a Cutty Sark.

Caption 1: The old woman of the neighborhood liquor store, who is usually sociable, gave me a glass when I bought Cutty Sark previously.
Caption 2: That store sells a 2900 yen Cutty for 2700 after consumption tax. I say “thanks” without knowing that it’s sold for 2180 yen at the nearby convenience store……
(TN: There is a couple things to go over here:
1. Cutty Sark is a brand of Scotch whiskey originally created in 1923 less from ten miles from the birthplace of the famous clipper.
2. The “Consumption Tax” that Tokuhiro is talking about here refers to a tax that originally went into effect in Japan in April, 1989 as a nationwide federal tax on the purchase of consumerable goods. When originally passed, the tax was 3%, it has since gone up to 5%. Thus, Tokuhiro’s comment mentions that what he’s happy about is not merely getting cheaper Cutty Sark, but a cheap Cutty Sark that includes the added-on price from the Consumption Tax)

TN: So I guess this is probably the best song to have for the chapter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYsojjIPDNI
(I rather wish I could have maybe gone with Toto's "Africa" here...but maybe another time. This chapter mentions this song)

So basically the whole reason for moving was for Ta-chan to be closer to Helen...yeah, that makes plenty of sense. (well it was that or "Jane ate everything and they need a new food area"...that works too) I did really like the "marking" bit and the comment about the dried out trees...and the silly sight gag at the end regarding Jane on the raft. Then again...I do wonder what the heck is going on with Etekichi considering he's abandoning Eteko. Of course...the fact that Eteko hasn't been around really needs to be addressed eventually considering she only appeared for a few chapters and vanished.
