Let's hope that at least some super trashy and cringe stuff will come up, one that is fun to watch

Note the upper right corner.

I think it's still too early at that point for a trailer or teaser. But I could see that hinting at a "house tour" sort of thing aboard Going Merry.

Speaking of which, in this photo, Merry already looks better. I wonder if it still gets painted? Or maybe they intend to leave the eyes white, so they can be animated like in the anime. That would be goofy.

I'm on the fence about Merry, but Shanks' ship is spectacular!

Also this has been floating around. No confirmation if this is from the actual shoot, but could totally be Baratie.

I'm alright with the Merry tbh, it looks better everytime we see it so I'm hoping the finished product will be great. The Red Force is absolutely stunning though, actually insane.

I like that they're making the figureheads look more true to how real life ships would look. Having a big round sheep head with a thin line for a smile would look so out of place with everything else being adapted to look like a real life pirate setting.

The Baratie looks more luxurious than in the manga, lol, but still great set design work (if it really is the Baratie).

So that's tomorrow 4:53 PM GMT to Europe. (7:53PM for me in GMT+3). If you wanna see all series showcases, that starts 9AM PT (4PM Europe)

Expecting for costume reveals, few cast reveals and tour on Going Merry.

Not expecting much. As I presume they use the same stream for Sandman Panel that start at 10.10, the series show case is on hour from 9-10AM. They've listed 18 series for the showcase, so that's ~3:20 minutes per series (Sure, it will not spread evenly, because big tentpoles like Sandman are bound to get more time that stuff like Warrior Nun.)

Doesn't really allow too much. The original cast reveal was 1:40 minutes though, so costumes reveal for them would take about as much, and then there would be still time for some cast reveals (Mihawk?).

Actually here is the stream link with the timer. That's way better than me trying to remember which way the DST worked again.

I'm happy with what little we get of OPLA here, they're not super far into production but might get a teaser trailer at least with a glimpse of Straw Hats in costume.

I don't mind much bc I'm pretty darn hype for Sandman. :p

It is a good sign that the series is scheduled towards the end of the program. Usually for these sort of things, you leave the bigger reveals to the end. Though I have a sneaking suspicion OP is the second to last showcase and will be left in the shadow of Sandman full trailer, with message from Gaiman and from there on it will naturally flow onto the Sandman panel streaming right after.

Little skeptical about these. Mainly due to the Baratie photo. I don't know how they do on-the-go concept artwork in these kind of productions, but I just find it weird that the ship is just like painted on half way on the photo, leaving the forklifts on the picture and not painting the full mouth of the fish, but kinda fading it half way and leaving the desert behind. Unless it's ripped from a videoclip, where they will fade from concept art to set photo or something.

Langley Kirkwood was also rumored for Morgan last week, because he was listed as such in IMDB, but IMDB "leaks" are always need to be taken with a not grain, but a dispenser of salt, since anyone can edit it.

But I guess we'll learn more tonight. The Baratie does look good though there. I'm bit iffy on the Merry painting, but I guess it's okay when you zoom in a bit. Based on that painting, they could be indeed going for what I speculated, and actually have the ship have animated eyes and expressions, kinda like in the anime.

Also saw a (supposedly) leaked promo image of Luffy in the rowboat but I'll refrain from sharing anything until later, only a few hours until we get official news after all.

So above leak was true. Baratie pic was weird exactly why I speculated; it cross faded from concept art to building time lapse.

I'm still iffy about Merry, but other than that the sets look incredible.

It's also uncanny how much Zeff looks like Zeff.

It's really like they just drew Zeff's face onto a person.

Also Taz (Sanji) shared this on his IG story:

So sounds like we can count on good dynamic between them!

From looks alone the rest look good as well, I'm gonna wait for someone to find clips of them all bc I'm too lazy to research them myself. But so far no obvious misses casting wise, from what we've seen.

That's adorable again by Taz.

I'm also waiting for someone to do the hard work, but I did make a quick google of course. It's pretty cool that they seem to hire a lot of local (South African) actors, all expect Fairbrass in this patch.

I faintly remember Fairbrass' goon character in Cliffhanger, but not much. (That film is just a pure John Lithgow show despite Stallones presence, so how could I remember anyone else in it). But yeah, pretty much all unknown people for me as well.

Lmao, someone said the viewers on the YouTube premiere for Geeked Week went from 10,000 down to 600 after the One Piece announcement... idk if that's true but if it is, that should be a heck of an indicator for Netflix what they've decided to take on (though they obviously knew that before). The live chat was also like 80% people just asking for One Piece the whole hour or so, so. :XD

Though OP is insanely huge on YouTube in particular so I doubt it has much more overall support than something like Sandman or Umbrella Academy anyway, but still.

Yeah, didn't keep tabs, but also noted that the drop was massive. Definetly from 5 to 4 numbers at least. Maybe even 3.

But that's a great indication of interest. This was just excisting OP fandom mostly. If they do some marketing for other demographics and the show is even somewhat good and finds the new audiences as well, it really has the potential to become massive.

Honestly, I think it all comes down to how they deliver the quirky and toony nature of the world to the general Netflix watcher. If they manage to find the way to make my dad to buy it, they have a new GoT/Stranger Things at hand.

Some clips to show off their chops a bit. Randy is one of few YouTubers I watch somewhat regularly because he likes to theorize and analyze the writing and themes rather than just powerscale and trend hype like most others I've seen (hadn't watched a single one until like 6 months ago, never realized OPTube was such a huge thing lol).

But yeah, this was a nice little run-down of the new cast members!

According to Wikipedia's list, Oda is the third best selling fiction author alive, who is guaranteed to outsell the #2 JKR and will likely outlive the #1 Danielle Steele.

It is the most successful comic from a single author of all time.

It's the #1 series in the largest comic magazine in the world and has been that for quite some time. Thus it is also the flagship for all of Manga. Take it away and Manga (not Anime) will collapse outside of Japan.

There's also the uncredited pirate media sector.

Sandman or Umbrella Academy are snowflakes compared to One Piece.

The question is does Netflix know what they have at hand?

Because honestly I have never seen any fantasy series on Netflix that was beyond mediocre in terms of artistic quality, except the Dark Crystal series but that was the Jim Henson Company and we know they are the masters of puppets.

Usually it is tame teenager stuff, low budget and with horrible scripts. Out of the series you mentioned, I saw the first season of Umbrella Academy and must say I could write a dozen such series per month. Everything was predictable, the conflicts, the mysteries. The overall concept is cliche and overused. I suppose it has comics, and might be well done from that angle but as someone who did not know them it did not hook me up.

Heck maybe I even watched the second season, don't remember much. The Octobelly Ghost guy dies entirely, right? I think I remember. They burned their only creative character design in favor of five turds an elementary school kid could invent.

What I miss is any of the showrunners actually voice out his vision of the thing. Not that that is worth too much, as we know from GoT, but the fact that they are very silent on that makes me worried. I'm hoping they didn't just hire some *1985 directors that watched Dragon Ball as kids to simply mass produce this as just another show.

The more they hype without explanations, the more suspicious I get. What is their general idea what One Piece is all about, what audience will they aim this at, how much will they cover, why actor x for role y (beyond just the looks that everyone can see but that hardly says anything about the quality).
I like that they're making the figureheads look more true to how real life ships would look. Having a big round sheep head with a thin line for a smile would look so out of place with everything else being adapted to look like a real life pirate setting
I hate it. It completely misunderstands the aesthetic of Oda's world. It's an anachronistic and wild mix. There are things that should absolutely look realistic. Like Alubarna or Shandora for example. Then there are things that should not. Like Merry.

Not every crew has a cartoon ship. By taking this away from Luffy, they feed into my deepest concern. The Christopher Nolan inspired craze for darkness and realism in comic movies. Absolutely hate these movies his Gotham looks like Frankfurt am Main. But Yeah left a big impact and now every comic adaptation to film or series tries to be realistic unless they have the budget for a video-game esque cgi aesthetic like the MCU, which looks equally bad.

I would love to know how you came to this exaggerated conclusion.

We all know what One Piece represents, but collapse...?

You clearly haven't read much about this production have you? Matt Owens, originally lead writer and later co-showrunner, is basically to thank for this production even happening. Out of all the pitches to Oda thorough the years, he was the one to convince Oda. And Oda said it was much due to how personal it was - Owens basically opened up on how One Piece saved him when he was severely depressed. Owens is a long time fan, who was active in the fandom years before this series. Heck, after announcement he even took time to participate to the Reverie podcast/stream, to discuss with dozens of Youtubers, wiki admins and others fans. His heart is definetly in the right place with One Piece, and this is a major reason why I am excited. It is not a heartless cash grab - the helmsman is a true professional and passionate fan.

Owens' previous credits include solid episodes of Luke Cage and Agents of SHIELD. He is supported by the other show runner Steven Maeda, who is also a fan, but also an industry veteran who worked on stuff like X-Files and Lost. Directors include Marc Jobst, who directed the best episodes of Daredevil and Witcher. He also recently talked about directing fight scenes in a workshop, and later out it's all about remembering WHY they are fighting and what for in every shot and action. He gets it. Other known director's are Tim Southman (The Good Doctor, Locke and Key) and Emma Sullivan (Doctor Who).

They really seem to hire people who know their shit and/or love the original.

How many people actually read Manga? In the West it is a small niche. Paper based content is dieng out. Digitalization of Manga is poor and inaccessible to many (language barriers). Reading in general is dieing out slowly, how many people do you know who actually read in their spare time?

Anime, entirely different thing. We had a lot of trending anime lately, like Demon Slayer, but how many people have actually read that (outside of Japan)?

One Piece is the one thing people read instead of watch. Pretty much the only ongoing series with active readers here in Germany.
