Before any of the games, the primary threat in the universe is a force called the Burning Legion. An infinite army of demons and warlocks, led by the destroyer of worlds, Sargeras. They go from world to world, and convert, enslave, or slaughter it's inhabitants. It's ultimate goal is to undo the universe.
In Warcraft 1: Orcs come from a world called Draenor. The Burning Legion send an agent to trick the Orcs into drinking demon blood and to invade another world to weaken it for their invasion of it: Azeroth, our world. The Orcs formed The Horde, an alliance of Orcish clans. Important figures were Blackhand, the Warchief of the Horde, and Gul'dan the head Warlock. The Orcs invade through a portal called the Dark Portal and wage war against the human kingdom of Stormwind. Stormwind loses and the Orcs destroy it.
In Warcraft 2: The survivors of Stormwind sail north to the 6 other human kingdoms (Dalaran, Alterac, Lordaeron, Gilneas, Kul'tiras, and Stromgarde) and form the alliance of Lordaeron to fight against the orcs. The Dwarves of Ironforge and Gnomes of Gnomeregan also join. After the Orcs invade Quel'thalas, the High Elves also join to fight the Horde. Important figures are Anduin Lothar, Turalyon, Kurdran Wildhammer, Khadgar, Alleria Windrunner, and Danath Trollbane.
While the Alliance forms, the Horde has internal strife and Blackhand is killed, and Orgrim Doomhammer becomes Warchief. He tries to steer the horde away from dark magic, but still continues the war in Azeroth in search of a better home for the Horde, rather then their corrupted world. The Horde loses and the remaining Orcs are put in prison camps instead of just executing them. The portal the Horde came through, the Dark Portal, is deactivated.
In Warcraft 2 Beyond the Dark Portal: The remainder of the Horde on the other side of the portal, led by an orc named Ner'zhul, open it back up and steal artifacts from Azeroth. They realize that united, Azeroth is too strong to invade. So they plan on using the artifacts to open new portals to invade other worlds. On Azeroth, the Alliance realize that the Horde could always be a threat if they're not taken care of, so they put together an expedition force to go through the portal and end the Horde once and for all. They find a world called Draenor, a scarred and corrupted world from the Orc's constant war and dark magic. The Horde begin to open multiple portals to other worlds but it begins to devastate the world and the planet rips apart. A chunk survived floating in space which is known as Outland, where remnants of the Horde and Alliance expedition survived.
Do to the Horde's failure, Ner'zhul was punished by Kil'jaeden, a powerful demon in the Burning Legion. Also the same one who tricked the Orcs into drinking the demon blood in the first place. He was tortured and his soul was put inside a special helmet called the Helm of Domination. He gives Ner'zhul one last chance to be useful and tosses the helmet onto Azeroth.
Warcraft 3: Years later the Alliance is mostly split apart and Stormwind is rebuilt. The Orcs, under the leadership of a young Orc named Thrall, begin breaking out of the prison camps. No longer under the effect of the demon blood, they simply seek a new place to call home and start a new life for themselves. So they hijack some ships and sail across the sea.
Meanwhile, in the human Kingdom of Lordaeron, a mysterious plague is emerging. The prince, Arthas Menethil was sent to investigate the plague and discovered that it was the work of a necromantic cult called the Cult of the Damned. He found it's leader, Kel'thuzad, and killed him. But the plague persisted and not only killed people, buit raised them from the dead. After learning the city of Stratholme had been infected, Arthas slaughtered the city, figuring it was better than letting them be raised into undeath. He eventually found the demon responsible, Mal'ganis, a dreadlord of the Burning Legion. He taunts the prince and tells him to meet him north on the frozen continent of Northrend (up until now everything has taken place on the continent of the Easter Kingdoms). Arthas follows and lands in Northrend with an expedition and finds the continent is filled with undead. In his travels, he learns of an ancient sword called Frostmourne that could help him defeat Mal'ganis. The sword is a trick though, when someone touches Frostmourne, the sword takes their soul. He is now a servant of the Lich King, who is that you ask? Ner'zhul's soul trapped in the Helm of Domination is the Lich King. He commands the undead army called the Scourge, to weaken Azeroth to make way for the Burning Legion.
Arthas returns to his home of Lordaeron, kills his father, and destroys his kingdom. He marches north with his undead army to Quel'thalas and resurrects his old enemy, Kel'thuzad, in the High Elves' Sunwell, a powerful source of magic. But not before wiping out 90% of their population. Most of the remaining High Elves change their name to Blood elves to remember their fallen people. Together, Arthas and Kel'thuzad open a portal for Archimonde, another powerful demon of the Burning Legion (Archimonde and Kil'jaedan are of similar strength and are both Sargeras' right hand men) who destroys the human kingdom of Dalaran before setting off to the other side of the world.
Survivors from Lordaeron and other human kingdoms make their way across the sea. They are led by Lady Jaina Proudmoore, princess of Kul'tiras, powerful mage, and former friend of Arthas before he went evil. Both them and New Horde led by Thrall, arrive on the shores of a new continent called Kalimdor. They meet many new races including the Tauren led by Cairne Bloodhoof and the Night Elves led by Tyrande Whisperwind and Malfurion Stormrage. Not every one can get along but things change when the Burning Legion and the Scourge arrive on Kalimdor and try to destroy Nordrissil, the world tree, a very powerful and essential part of Azeroth. The Horde, Alliance, and Night Elves team up to battle the demons and undead. Tyrande releases Malfurion's brother Illidan from prison to help them but he succumbs to the allure of power the same as Arthas did and follows his own path. Only thanks to ancient nature magic are the heroes able to destroy Archimonde and push back the legion.
After this, Illidan becomes a temporary agent of the Burning Legion, and is sent to destroy the Lich King for betraying the Burning Legion. Illidan is defeated by Arthas and Arthas puts the Helm of Domination on his head, becoming the Lich King. His mind defeats Ner'zhul's mind and becomes the dominant force in the Helm, and then hibernates for years.
Ten years later is when World of Warcraft begins, after the battle, there was a fragile peace. Along with the Orcs, the Horde became made up of Darkspear Trolls, Tauren, and the Forsaken (a group of undead who have broken free of the Lich King's control and set up their city in the ruins of Lordaeron). The Alliance are the humans of Stormwind, Dwarves, Gnomes, and Night Elves. In later expansions the Blood Elves and Goblins join the Horde and the Draenei and Worgen join the alliance.
