Making it to the big leagues - Translating professionally.

+ posted by njt in Shout-Outs on Jan 21, 2009 06:48

A short while back Hisshouburaiken mentioned on his translator page that he got a killer gig translating anime. I asked him to give some more details but at the time he wasn't allowed.

But now that his project has been released he was able to give me more info! Apparently he's one of the two new translators for the anime Eyeshield 21! So one of our own translators is part of the new collaboration going on with TV Tokyo and Crunchy Roll!

When asked how he feels about making it into the big leagues for translators he said:

Quote:
It's indescribably satisfying to be able to translate professionally, but I never would've gained the experience and notoriety (or perhaps infamy) necessary to get this job without the resources and support of the MangaHelpers community. A million thanks to everyone who helped this site, and me, achieve as much as we have.

So that goes out to all of you who's helped support the translators on the site with your appreciation! With our help we can help make those dreaming to get into the professional field a possibility too!

Have you shown your appreciation today? Click the thanks button or write your appreciation below!

OMG Congrats to the man!

I love Hisshou's work and only wish there was a was that my leeching could some how be turned into income and now that realization has come to past.

Now I love eyeshield 21, but viewed the anime as a bastardization but with HBK on the job I'm definitely giving it another shot.

Congatulations. You certainly deserve it. And you take the good road. Let's face it, you could also make money by translating stuff for people, and taking up to two dollars a page, like many other translators do. Not that I think commissions are bad, I just think 2 dollars for a page is too much.

And I have to say that I hope this won't happen too often. There are already not enough jap-eng translators as it is and I hope we won't loose more of our finest.
Not having Hisshou's translations anymore is already a huge blow to the community. Imagine cnet and other translators would score such a job too and they'd stop translating. I hope I won't see that day (they'd deserve such jobs though).

The more of our 'finest' translators working on the official released manga and anime, the less we need to illegally compete with the publishing companies about crappy translated licensed series >.>;

Hey Congratulations Hisshou -- you're an inspiration to the rest of us out there who are working towards that same dream.

Very few people work as hard, put out as good quality translations, and have done this consistently for as long as you have, so what else can we say but that you deserve it. Keep it up!

<Eni> "The more of our 'finest' translators working on the official released manga and anime, the less we need to illegally compete with the publishing companies about crappy translated licensed series "

That's ture.
I take the translation of a scanlation over the text from a published version any day of the week (although I can only speak about german published versions). So it would certainly improve the quality of the published versions if more translators from the community would get such jobs.
But that's only one of the reasons why I scanlate myself and read scanlations. I think any manga should be scanlated in the best quality possible with a fan translation.
Not only because of the translation quality but also because of money and time.

I have 100 mangas on my reading list and sadly I can't buy them all at once. Until then, I can at least have the scanlation.
And time is also a factor. You know how long it takes until the newest chapter is released in published versions in other countries. With scanlations I can read it immediately.
So while having our translators score jobs and imrpove the quality of publishers is a good thing, losing translators is not good for the community. Because scanlations are still needed even if the publishers did as good a job as the community does.

I'm more curious to hear the story behind the story.
Did the panel help in scoring this gig? What channel exactly helped you achieve this?
I highly doubt any of the big companies are going to read online scanlations, find one they like and say, "gee, let me check the credits page and contact people who don't even use their actual names".

...i've always wondered, how in the world are we supposed to use our "alter egos" as any sort of resume-builder?

Best wishes, H.

Actually I know to pretty well known "scanlators" (they did the trans part) got jobs based on their work online. Akoftroy and Stephen.
#57. by shrimpy ()

Wow, really? But surely those people had to proactively go to the companies--the companies didn't come to them, right?

Maybe you can convince H to do a lil interview for us on professional work and how to get into it.
