Fairy Tail - Chapter 519 Review by BluePegasusWell, what to say? This chapter ended up being one of the worst we've had in quite a while, mostly because it contained some very low-quality writing. Repeating the same old mistakes, in all honesty.
After a week of waiting, we finally got to see the effects of Irene's most hyped offensive spell. Unfortunately, it ended up being a travesty. As probably most people expected, Erza sliced right through the huge sized meteor with her katana. You can't get it more unrealistic. So, if this is everything an enhanced version of Sema itself can cause, it's actually quite obvious why Jellal used Grand Chariot to take Neinhart down instead of.. That. Aha.
And so we also discover some new, actually pretty interesting things: Wendy can enchant her own magic in objects, Erza's katana in this case. Although, that turn of events felt more like a form of plot armour towards Erza. But what felt the most strange thing to me is the fact that she managed to succesfuly slice through the body of Irene's dragon form, badly damaging her in a way she couldn't even keep her superior form intact. It's nonsense: how could Erza take down a dragon with a sword that contained a bit of Dragon Slayer Magic, while none of the actual Dragon Slayers could slay a dragon back in the Eclipse Gate events? Way to destroy the reputation of dragons. And with that single blow, Irene was already done in.
Before the fight actually ended, we still got some panels that contained flashbacks to the time Irene just gave birth. Irene crying over Erza's smile was probably the best written part of this chapter. But again, like always in Fairy Tail, the flashbacks were over before you knew it. Rushed to get some more pieces of the worst Spriggan-related fight up to now.
And then we got
the plot twist of this time's chapter: Irene apparently killing herself because she's ashamed of her weakness to kill. Feels more like a way to end Irene as soon as possible, but it was still a better ending to this horrendous fight than Erza landing the final blow.
So, it all comes down to this. The ending of this chapter made the last five chapters feel so valueless. Erza is alive, Wendy is alive, but Irene is dead. Okay, back to where we started. All our last hope is focused on the one and only August, and I will pray for him (and oh, we shouldn't forget about the other surviving Spriggan that are completely forgotten). At least we know Erza finally got her anticipated Spriggan fight which means she'll remain silent for the upcoming chapters. But will we ever forget the tragedy of it? Oh well, in the end we all saw it coming.
