Relatively Secret Project! We Need Your Help!

+ posted by njt in Site News on Apr 10, 2009 22:35

We're trying to keep busy at MH with a new super relatively secret project (I'll let you guys figure it out though ;) ).

For now, I just have a small request can you:
1) Post links to translations that you think need the most improvements.
2) Write as many reasons you have for choosing that/those links (The more specific you are, the better).

Now keep in mind the goal of this isn't to humiliate anyone but to create an awareness of a problem and work together to fix it. So try to be as constructive as you can when going over their work.

They can be from any source, scanlations or regular posts.

The people I'm asking to participate in this should know what I'm talking about in terms of "translations that need the most improvements" so I won't go into detail as to what to look for.

While you are at it, can you:

3) Post links to translations that you thought were the best you've ever read?
4) Following the same pattern above, why did you think so?

Thank you for taking the time to help out in this, as the end result should help change things drastically around here.

Have you shown your appreciation today? Click the thanks button or write your appreciation below!

FIRST!! lol.

Hm, I can see where this is going, but I'll keep on a look out for the "translations in need of improvement" and "translations that I think are the best."

Hope this site improves after this project that you guys are working with!

I think this is a good idea but it needs to be anonymous somehow. Maybe add something like a "critiques" tab as well as comments for translations that would be anonymous (but still only available to logged-in users)?

If I understand this correctly it would be more of a series of editorials by a competent translator and/or proofreader.
The system of having a regular critique tab for translations does not work, since it will either become full of "its nice lulz", or in the small chances there will be a competent translator who writes quite a piece, no one else will be able to see and draw experience and knowledge from it since it is hidden in some critique section of a translation.

Doing it in a public way, in a structured, manual system, is the only way I can see that it can be influential (which is the hopeful endgame).

But yes, I do agree that the one being critiqued should be allowed to decide if it is anonymous or not. And if the person submitting it is not the translator him-/herself it would be anonymous, although I guess personal turn-ins should be prioritized.

But seriously, I would be very surprised if the critique goes anything like "this sucks." Firstly, since that would be a pointless critique because it does not teach the critique readers anything. It will very most likely be gone through in a helpful manner, explaining what could be improved.

It is nothing to be afraid of, and if you attend University you should be used to oppositions, or if you are going to attend one, it is just as well that you learn to receive helpful critique from others; because no one is as good as they think they are, and will keep on fooling themselves into that until they are told otherwise.

I can admit that, myself, with certainty.

But I'm just speaking from my own heart here. I don't really know anything...

Well, I think it would be best if we not use critique tabs, how about advice tabs or something like that?

And yeah, I don't have any image what will you guys do.........

P.S: It's us who must improve, not the site, notice how people just click online viewing or direct download without really paying attention to anything else....

Stmated has it pretty much on the mark. We'll be doing a series of posts showing what has been accepted as "good English" but really should be changed. Standards are too low and hopefully we can help raise them :).

is this only for scans and trans associated with mangahelpers? 'cuz I can think of plenty not great quality translations I've read, and they come from all over
#10. by Monz ()

Yeah I agree... people are always willing to complain but not willing to help make things better... I see this as a great way to improve the scanlation community as a whole... and help us release higher quality stuff then we are now... i'm glad the people here at MH are willing to take the first step in doing this and I fully support them and may also be willing to proofread some of the trans to help out. ^^

Before offering to proofread, please check over your post for errors. That is a basic requirement. Not meaning to be mean, but what I mean is that it would be mean to not tell you what it means to proofread.

I am a proofreader; I believe myself to be competent enough.
For series I really care about, if I think its required, I will offer my services- I won't offer if translations /do not/ require it (I'm pretty busy myself).

When I do proofread, all the changes I make are (I believe (of course this is just my opinion, but I think its a good one)) necessary.
So a complaint I have is that there are many translators out there who reject some or all revisions to the script...which is very disheartening, specially when time and effort has gone into it *and* the change is something like an "on" to an "at" or something- small changes that don't mean much individually but give the sentence much better sense (which the translator, up to their eyes in dual languages, may not be able to see at the time).
I know Japanese, but I'm not good enough to provide complete translations, my English is much better.

[ps the standard of my personal postings and the standard of my proofreads is quite different- in my posts I'm more casual, in my proofreads I'm trying to get it right lol]

personally i proofread as i'm using translations, so i've never seen the point in something like this, and it kinda nixes proofreaders as a whole, but hey it's a good idea

Hi, this applies only to jap/eng translations? if we can "criticize" international translations... how will you (njt) know we're being objectives?
#15. by Monz ()

When typing on a forum I don't necessarily try to keep perfect grammar or sentence structure... I assure you I can proofread just fine. ^^

the problem is how can i differentiate between translations.. ??!!!
