Some Requests Regarding Pending Translations

+ posted by njt in Site News on May 25, 2009 13:37

I have a few requests for the pending translations section to help me and the other translators going through and approving the translations ^^;.

Can those of you translating for the first time...

1) Make sure we have access to the raw.
2) Transcribe (if you can't, that's fine. But the ones that are take priority.)
3) Try to get your translation proofread for Flow, Grammar, and Punctuation ahead of time.

Also if you, the person reading this post, have some free time. Can you help out with pending translations too?

If you don't know Japanese but can proofread. By all means take the initiative and proofread the chapter. Signing up is encouraged though.

If you know Japanese REALLY well and think you can help other translators with mistakes in their translation contact me via PM.

Thanks! My goal is to be caught up with all the pending translations this week. Sorry to have so many pending ^^;.

Have you shown your appreciation today? Click the thanks button or write your appreciation below!

Translators (new and established) should really make it a habit to transcribe for many reasons:
  1. To make it easier for translation checkers to check your work.
  2. It's easier to look up words in a Japanese online dictionary if you have the kanji written.
  3. You could use the MH Dictionary to help search for a phrase you previously translated.
  4. It makes it easier for scanlators to put the translation into the correct bubble; I saw a few times groups put the translation in the wrong bubble. XD

Well, about point 4... Sometimes scanlators just skip the transcription. And, in any case, they'd just check the first kanjis to see if they match. So, for similar kanjis or bubbles with part of the text repeated, they could also get it wrong with the transcription...

Well, stuff with furigana you hardly ever have to draw the kanji into the dictionary, that's mostly with Seinen, unless the translator has a good kanji memory. And if the translator's head of the group and does the final qc checks, the bubble error things drop substantially.

I think the only real advantage for a translator to transcribe is to stick kanji better in the brain. For tsl checkers, really only a worthwhile spending of effort if the TLC isn't good with kanji, cause if they are, they should either know the on/kun already and can look up the kanji in the dict just as fast as if they were to copy paste or they can read it without a dictionary.

Not all raws are 3000px height... In some of them, you can't barely read the furigana, and even if you can read most of it, there'll always be small text where you can't read it, or even (hand-)written text, which has no furigana...

The usual format is at least 1200 height which is pretty reasonable, visibility wise. But yes, handwritten text is the exception, though outside of Shoujo, it's either all handwritten or very sparingly used.

I actually agree with tradedaemon. I don't think transcribing makes things that much easier, at least for checking translations (assuming there is a RAW present). I would much rather have it a requirement for translators to provide the start and end page numbers at the top of the translation, particularly if the RAW was released in a volume and not as an individual chapter. It's annoying to have to hunt and guess around for the correct link to take me to the original Japanese. Transcribing would partly take care of this problem, but I personally just don't feel safe checking a translation not knowing what's actually going on visually in the manga.

I know some scanners may not like this idea, but I vote that you must be required to make a raw public for viewing to get a proof, because that way a checker can easily pull up the raw and look at the trans side-by-side, saving many transcription headaches.

The reason why Transcribing is a good thing though is, it helps in the future when those that want to use the search function and search for translations of that particular japanese.

Take 適当 http://mangahelpers.com/translators/search/?q=%E9%81%A9%E5%BD%93 having it subscribed helps bring up other various translation uses.

As for having it transcribed for checking a translation, I often read the raw and then read the translation after. Having the transcription with it means I don't have to keep checking back to the manga to see the exact japanese written which indeed saves time :).
