Important Notice For International Scanlators (update)

+ posted by bax in Site News on Aug 30, 2009 16:55

Hello everyone

This news post is again directed to international scanlators who are using other groups' releases as the base for your releases. Which means those who just clean the bubbles and insert your own language there.

I got tons of reports which really shows that a lot of you never read the last announcement. I don't really see why it's so hard to fulfill a really simple request. I'm not sure if it's the language barrier or stuffs like that, but if you're able to get the original scanlations, that means you're somewhat able to understand English.

Now, on to the point. From here on out, I will immediately hand a ban to anyone who fails to follow the rules after their first warning. Which means, if you do it the second time, you'll get a ban. I know you won't like it, but if you can't respect others, then I don't see why others should put up with you.

The period of the ban will be decided after looking at your history. If you're a first timer, a week to two weeks would be your first period. Subsequent offenses might lead you directly to a permanent ban.

This may sound harsh, but there are rules around here. If you don't want to comply, then there are two options. Either clean the RAW files yourselves or stop using the groups' releases. Otherwise, you might find yourself seeing your username being crossed out.

Thank you again for the groups who made that extra effort to follow the rules. As for the others who fall into this category (international scanlators who are using other groups' releases), please do take a note and your cooperation is appreciated.

well this is something you and me talk wayyyyyyy back XD and this matter will never end sad but truth, given the fact that in the case for spanish groups there is other sites such as submanga.com they dont care bout the original scanlating group just like how onemanga dosent care about the quality neither, till there is a talk between sites to start pushing rules into grups people will just keep going at it, for intance i keep seeing every one a new group with the same scans share in onemanga and just use paint on it, sad baut truth, dont beleave me?? check al teh bleach and naruto releases every week XD you will also see how they say they clean the crap or might not even have credits some also say
cleaner: someone
typesetter: some one
raw: someone else XD
some might say
raw: sleepy fans
but most dont and there is not a single way to stop this unless all scanlating sites make a meeting and talk to each other about this issue, i have already try to contact the owners and admin of submanga but im not well like on that site XD so they just ignore me, i defenetly recomend a talk between site owners just to stablish some kind of agreement of rules..

I agree with Lsshin's proposal, but I doubt that would actually be possible. I don't even understand why people use onemanga et al. when MH has everything you could possibly need and more.

it dosent matter where you getting the scans from what the problem is the credits and so on..

I meant to say that I don't get why people are willing to use sites that are clearly lower quality, and don't even care whether proper credit is given or not. I guess that isn't directly related to this announcement tho.

wait i havent reported my issue yet.
there was this international scan team "saikyou anime" who used our clean scan from IEatManga. i cleaned some pages in ch148 and was used by saikyou anime group, for me i dont want other groups using or editing my cleaned scans thot members from IEatManga never informed me if they're letting other groups use their scans.. one of the reasons why i took a break from cleaning for their group.

anyways if other groups would want to use other people's scans they should properly put some notice on their credits page like, "we have permission to use ????? scan's release" and "we edited the pages etc..." and they should properly credit the name of the editors and not just mention the name of the group like "cleaned by ????-scans", ofcourse before that they should properly ask permissions.

also i think there should be a blacklist of scan-group offenders, to increase the level of warning and so that other users would take notice of the groups who use others release.

oh btw i dont know if someone already reported this
but i saw 'AnimeSo' (scan-group) uploaded binktopia's onepiece ch555 in the credits page it says "do not mirror this scanlation outside of MangaShare/binktopia"
thot i know that binktopia releases a version for MH but i think AnimeSo's uploading that credit page here is wrong

esactly to give credit is one thing but if a group does not want their cleans to be reused by no one else than that should be respected but i guess ppl just dont care and the reason is because no one has forced them to care, we should go akumetsu on them XD

Sorry my english...

We put all the pages used by other scalation in our
sleeves?
I say this because we have over 250 relases and uf ... Now now from
early August and we are always putting the original scalation:)

@ strina

We're not without leniency. For the past releases, well.. since yours are too many, we can excuse them... since I understand it's a really big trouble to go through almost 400 releases.

What important is from here on, just give credits where credits are due (by the way asked by the groups if they mentioned one) :)

Hey, one suggestion:
Add one more point to rules which are shown on the "add scanlation page". A rule which will warn people about the consequences of using someone's release without asking for permission or crediting them.

What I mean is that some might say they they didn't read these news, some might register after the news aren't shown on the main page. Some might have bookmarked "add scanlation" page instead of main page, so they don't read news at all.
Well, I don't really care about them, but this way you shouldn't have problems with people claiming "they didn't know".

~~
Also strina, IMO the best thing would be if you edited "release notes" and wrote there at least "this is translation of english release" - I know you might not remember whose scanlations did you use for each of your chaopters, so for these you don't know add something like: "Due to the time that has passed since releasing the chapter we aren't really sure whose releases did we use. If it's yours contact us, and we'll add you to release notes". (though with time, you should also change the actual credits)
I get it might take some time, but I think it's the best choice you can make.

I'm spanish indepent translator, from english into spanish, in my translations i'm always credit the authors of the translations, but not all the scanlator groups credit the translators from Japanese to english, so i love the idea of put all the credit page of the english scans who usually credit the original translator.

the thing is a very few (i'm refering to all scanlator english, spanish and all the languages) to credit the original raw provider!!! without the original raw the teams have nothing to work about!!

that is why i'm independant because i see a lot of guys no credit anyone (mostly of them aren't in mangahelpers, and they are imposible to track them down...)
This internet and these is simple impossible...

but for the ones are here all of them credit the raw, the transalators and the cleaners are all the courtesy we need and i thankfull for it!!

the idea of english groups become international is a good one too, there you will have all the credit we need and i'm aviable if anyone to ask my permission for doing so..

but credit the translator, the raw provider and the cleaners is a good start

And all of us must to remember that the mangaka need the credit too... in the way you as scanlators must say in a corner of your work that when the manga will be aviable to be buy in your language you must buy it!!! and is not the same time you can buy it in english at the time you can buy it in spanish or italian or russian or wathever...

Well... i did everything i could to stay out of this discussion... but here it goes my 2 cents of contribution to this discussion...
I didnt really used the scanlation of Binktopia, cos they never really gave me nothing... I used theirs realeases as a RAW!!!
I always need, my self alone, to erase everything, inluding text over image on whatever source i got to use.
I tried to keep in touch with Binktopia, they simply dont even bother to answer me.

Lets be realistic, all of us... They really dont gave and dont plan to gave, us or any other group, nothing... they want to be acknowledged for something they dont really own...
So if they gave us all the PSD files, cleans and ready to use i will gladly make another realease and credit pages, telliing the whole word what they are REALLY GRACEFULLY GIVING US...

But in any other case, we own them the same they own to WSJ e dont even bother to credit too... (to be true if they were to respect WSJ wishes they would never, ever, do a single release) they are a bunch of hypocrits....

And if you people on mangahelpers insist on touch our realeases this way i will be obligated to simply dont put any realease on your site...
I will be imensely disappointed with you guys and sadly will put to an end a sucesfull partnership we made over the last year...

The help from mangahelpers to increase our audience over the internet was and is amazingly valuable, but i will not bend to Binktopia or any other group thar make demands without even bothering to reason about.

I have myself too problems with outher brazilian scanlation group that uses my translation as base to their releases without any credits.
But i am not a crying baby like this people.... so let them use as they wish my translation... I DONT OWN THE RIGHTS OVER THE IMAGES AND THE WORDS NEITHER...

So it is mangahelpers call, I will repost my releases as it is, with binktopia credit on Mangahelpers system only.
It is up to you, if a get any more releases removed i will simply stop realeasing it here...

Thanks for you patience and kindness...

Hi zaoz,

Regarding your comment, I just want to add something. Technically, you are not using Blinktopia's scans are RAWS. Raws refer to the image that are unleveled, pixelated, and could possible be in different colour (depending on the quality of the scans). During the cleaning process, you will need to level the scans, clean away all the dust, redraw lines and patterns, clean out gutters, etc. It is NOT just removing the Japanese text. I'm a scanlator so I know, cleaning could possible be the most tiresome process overall. When you use their scans, it is ALREADY cleaned, it is not RAW (just because it's not in the language you are using). After all the effort they have put in to provide HQ scans, I believe you have the right to credit them. It's not them trying to be arrogant, I too will happily let other people reuse my work, as long as they credit me, not because I feel like I own the scans, or want to be worship, I simply want to be acknowledge for the fact that I work hard to bring fans the scanlations, and I'm sure Blinktopia. Any group would want to be acknowledge for the work they do. Scanlation is not a job, the people who work on these don't get paid, they simply do it beause they enjoy reading manga, the least we can do is respect them and acknowledge them.

Of course, I agree with your comment about no one owns the scans apart from WJ and the mangaka, but that's common knowledge, and I can assure everyone knows that (I mean, no group clean out the authors name or stated that they're the people who created the manga). But if you keep that in mind, then there might as well be not scanlation ever. Everyone might as well just not scanlate anything as we obviously don't own anything.

Also, you are using their translation as a base, using something their group has spend ages working on. Isn't it then a common courtesy then to at least acknowledge that?

Anyway, I hope I didn't sound offensive, but I just want to point that out ><
