Alright, I'll be honest with you. I have mixed feelings about this.
Gantz, my beloved series, is leaping into the big screens.
Update New TeaserJust a short update for those of you who are actually wanting to see this movie. As for me and this little clip... not making me anymore excited than I already am (and that isn't much....)
Kei Kurono will be played by Kazunari Ninomiya who well... (
Dear Lord... ><)
Masaru Kato will be played by Ken'ichi Matsuyama (
Played L in Death Note,
played Krauser in DMC etc)
The reason I have mixed emotions about this is, while the selection for who plays who could have been WAY better... it *is* going to be done by the same studio that produced 20th Century Boys (which was extremely well shot if you ask me) and the studio that covered
Summer wars will be involved in the CG so I think they just MIGHT be able to pull this off.
But honestly, I can't help but see failure after seeing who is playing who. With Gantz in its "Final Phase" could Oku be trying to cash in on the manga before it ends? Could this mean the manga will at least last until the movies are released? The first movie is due out around January in 2011 and then the second the following spring.
For those of you who haven't taken the
Gantz plunge try
reading it. Here's a little (and old) trailer for some
Gantz DVDs - not the movie trailer... Here's hoping it's at least better than this :D.
sourceP.s. If you're wondering how the Japanese are taking it, they aren't happy...
EDIT - I edited in the red because people seem to be confusing the DVDs for the actual movie trailer ><
They better do this nice, and have a huge budget for special effects, else it's predestined to fail...
Just my 2 cents...
anyway, that gantz dvd presentation sucks completly lol, i've never seen anything so bad lol i think, in a dvd at least.
anyway, gantz will be really hard to put in live action but, there's always hope
And the actors..... Kei's actor should be fired; he completely doesn't give off the Kei vibe.

Nagase Tomoya as Makoto Majima (the guy getting pushed - He'd totally be a better Kato)
Kubozuka Yosuke as Takashi (King of G-Boys) (Guy with blond hair and blood lip - Would make a kick ass Kei)
Here's another Kei-ish scene :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMjJFQzLEiA
I haven't read the manga myself, but didn't they take a long time before deciding to make an LA movie, I mean, Gantz was always a big hit manga wasn't it?
That and they're worried about censoring as well
Love it!
It'll be some stupid, watch aliens get exploded movie...
i dont think it will be successfull. just my views
I strongly am pro japan than hollywood and would take japanese actors for it over americans any day >.> EVEN if they are the ones above...
on the one side, I think... oh god it's gonna fail... but then I think, it's not done by americans! :D so it might be good...
and on the other side... A GANTZ MOVIE!!! SWEET!
As for IWGP... Yes! Nagase Tomoya is perfect as Katou... tall and righteous looking... Umm... not so sure about Kubozuka Yosuke... but I really like him as an actor... that's before he jumped off a building and still had acting jobs anyway. Hmm... if you think about it... may be Yosuke's real life right now will fit the role of Kei in Gantz pretty well actually!
Or maybe it was just the way the picture was taken.
By the way, the Gantz DVD is horrible. If they make anything close to that level of graphical effects, I'll have to kill the director with a level 2 gantz gun and pancake him.
Great timing, too - The Gantz series has just stepped into a whole new level, and it's now going live. Hope it doesn't go too bad.
*Crosses fingers*
Can they really find enough good-looking, big-breasted Asians women who can act?
1) Prepare for censorship
2) Prepare for butchering of the original manga
3) On second thought, the original manga is really not that good. It's just drawn differently, I'm still perplexed why so many people still like it when typically whole chapters are dedicated to a character panting heavily and maybe firing one shot at something to then explode into a graphical gore display that's physically impossible.
I expect this to be B-grade at best with 3D monsters looking like robots in costumes and completely unbelievable "scared-out-of-my-mind" acting.
Why don't they ever turn something good into live action? I'd freaking explode if I heard, for example, Hajime no Ippo was becoming a live action.
Ken'ichi Matsuyama in Death Note 1&2, though a limited release. Same with DMC. While kind of underground in North America, he does have some international fame.
Ninomiya starred in "Letters from Iwo Jima", that Clint Eastwood war film. Add to that his Johnny's popularity, and then you have two popular movie actors with serious experience.
They also are quite good "actors". The issue with most choices in modern Japanese film is that they choose actors and actresses that look like the characters, but have absolutely no clue how to act. I would rather have two different looking characters but a solid movie than a bunch of pretty no-names stumbling through lines for two hours. If this is done well, I will probably enjoy it.
bittman has a great point though...
Well... I don't know. Since I'm looking forward to the cast (Nino x Matsuken OMG!! <3<3<3) rather than it being a live-action form of Gantz.
And yeah. I also agree with #37
But ughh this is Gantz, I'm pretty sure there will be censorship or they would just skip the scenes altogether, or alter them to make it qualified for the big screen. There would probably be an uncensored version on DVD/Blu-Ray some months after the release. Maybe...
but until know I have to say... I don't have a bad feeling about the movie... it's a japanese movie so I'm really hoping the best. and I'm really not a fan of manga-movies.... but I think this one won't be bad at all. let's all hope and pray guys... hope and pray
Was that Reika or Tae-chan? Cause if that was Tae-chan, then how is Reika supposed to be any better in looks? (bigger boobies?)
Man, after seeing this trailer, I'm disappointed at the feel of it.
It's supposed to be some seriously realistic movie that shouldn't show any purpose for a song like in this trailer. This was disappointing.
They should let Marvel directors do this Gantz thing. Using Asian actors of course. I bet it would look and feel more like a Gantz movie. This looks too cheap. It won't get very far. At least we know it won't be any better than the anime or manga. Asian movies should just stick with drama movies. They suck at science movies.
Other than that, there wasn't really much to see. The suits look fine to me. But there was hardly any action in the trailer so it's hard to imagine that.
But honestly, I think it will suck as much as the DB movie.
@spartacus: I've seen some quality animations and special effects in asian films. They can do it, but for some reason, sometimes they don't
It's giving a strong FAIL vibe to me.
hey, yo know I'm right. That's how pathetic this movie is gonna be.
The Gantz-suits doesn't even look real enough for me to buy it. If the suit isn't tight enough to show nipples, then the movie already lost some points.
obviously the gore is going to be a big factor in the film aswell, but look what saw gets away with altho i supose it depends what age rating they want to give it. it has to be at least 15,
Its Japan we are talking about, hope they use 3d apps to its max!!!
also make use of adobe CS5 apps! as after effect cs5.
I can't wait to see it!!!!
Dammit, I want Tarantino there... it would be great if it was about other gantzers, some of those who died in Italy or something. I dont think it would be possible to get a good Nishi or Kurono on a live action. As for the "trailer"... I dont think that they'll be able to make us fell that "SHIT! there is a #@~1! trying to kill me! WHAT THE HELL DO I DO NOW" with that kind of acting
and katooouuu i dont wanna say anyhing...
not stanning but could you guys cut the crap with the casts already?
Ninomiya is a legitimate GOOD actor. I'm not talking crap based on personal bias but it's a fact that most who have watched him act agrees with me. This includes all the big name critiques in Hollywood (A.O. Scott made it known in the New York Post he wished the boy had gotten an Oscar nomination for Letters from Iwo Jima)
Here's a CNN article on japanese actors who can act. Yuriko - girl who's playing Tae, and Nino is in it.

a gantz cg movie with advent children/higher quality will like a dream come true :)
the REAL teasers are up as of yesterday (14/5/10) and i highly recommend everyone to watch those instead before commenting on what you assume will be a rip-off :)

and please do not base ninomiya kazunari off on your first impression of him either. he is well known for his professional acting skills. please watch his dramas before you make any further assumptions. that picture of him up there btw, is from 2004. update that too please ^^
