The History of Scanlations - At Your Fingertips!

+ posted by njt in Promotions on Oct 11, 2009 05:58

The history of scanlations has been a long mysterious and somewhat hidden one. Who started what, when, and why are all questions I'm sure some of you have had that have gotten into the scene pretty deep. Well Gum, a very dedicated and hardworking member, has taken up the HUGE task of tracking down old and new groups from the scene as well as official people in the manga business to bring you the most informational site regarding the history of scanlations. EVER.

Things covered are:
1) The first groups.
2) How the scene has evolved.
3) Major contributors.
4) Much much more!

From the heroes and the villains of the scene, to interviews, time-lines, and terminology you might want your friends to know without having to explain yourself, this site has it all. So take a minute and educate yourself about why things are like they are today.

Leave some comments about what you think :). I'm sure Gum would appreciate the feedback ;).

I entered the scene in 2007 with the only group I've ever been on, Binktopia, so prior to that, I have no idea what happened. This is shedding light to all the old drama. Nice. Very nice.

Job well done!

Some nice work with some real nice tid bits strewn in there. I hope it gets more in-depth as it goes on as it is fairly general right now. Good stuff.

What an incredibly masturbatory website...

And who's deciding who the villains and heroes are? Isn't it all up to point of view?

@Nitouryu Yup ^.^ Let just say there's a reason the drama section is a bit short... and let's just say there are a lot of stuff that will likely never see the light of day.

This is amazing. You all are awesome people!
I had known manga scanlation since 2005, used to download it via IRC... But i had always been in the dark on what and how it started.

Really informative stuff, all this...but are we all sure we want people from the traditional media (who will of course visit this site eventually) and the official manga distributors to also know all this, above-ground?

Remind me of the good old days. Just hope that there will be more scanlation groups focus on Seinen rather than Shounen. At least we still have Kotonoha, Gantz Waitingroom, Endless Abyss.

I like the ealier part, the first generation part, it reminds me a lot when i first time ever read a scanlation. It is Love Hina!! though i am still questioning myself why i read that manga, i guess because it is the only manga that got scanlated completely >.< at the time i read.

I kinda feel the shoujo group part is a bit biased :D there are a lot of notable shoujo groups that never mentioned or mention only onced, well they are small or they are dead/struggling by now, or maybe because it is shoujo.
