J-Comi Wants to Purify Illegally Shared Manga with Ads After adding ads, manga will be reuploaded and made available for download if mangaka are agreeable, according to mangaka Akamatsu Ken's plan. Public company J-Comi announced that it would accept user-uploaded manga files on "J-Comi", which is a service that distributes out-of-print manga for free after adding advertisements.
J-Comi was started by mangaka Akamatsu Ken, who developed a distribution service where out-of-print manga would be uploaded with the permission of the authors, advertisements added and converted to a PDF file or made compatible with online readers. The beta version has made use of Akamatsu's own "Love Hina" and other mangaka who have agreed to have their works used.
In addition, ever since the inception of the J-Comi service, there have been plans to counter the trend of illegal sharing of manga on the internet, by having users upload those manga files, adding advertisements after getting consent from the mangaka, before releasing it for distribution as legitimate files. J-Comi said that with regards to series currently being serialized, publishers are always on the prowl to catch those who illegally share manga online. However, publishers do not hold the rights for out-of-print manga, so they do not patrol to search out such perpetrators.
With the implementation of the above plan, all advertisement revenue goes to the mangaka alone in the case of out-of-print series. For those that are not yet out-of-print, if there is no approval from the mangaka, the series will not be made available.
J-Comi said that there have already been numerous mangaka who have given the green light to use their series, but because there is still a large majority of mangaka who have not given their approval, the time between uploading and distribution may take a while.
