New Manga Shout Out: 1/30/12 - 2/5/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. With the no-raws/scans rule on MH, you have to work a bit to find these mangas. It has been 300 years since mysterious blue mists started flowing out of the earth. All living things have become immortal and injuries heal instantaneously and sickness doesn’t exist. The aging process has stopped and creatures have stayed the same age since they were exposed to the mist.

Paze Diamond is a state chimney worker that maintains the piping system that regulates the flow of the blue mist. He is known in the town as a clumsy and unlucky person. Paze is in search of happiness although he doesn’t know what that really means. About the same time he starts seeing blue birds that only he seems to be able to see, Margaret Howell literally falls out of the sky on him. The beautiful and happy Margaret immediately takes interest in Paze. Could this be the happiness Paze has been searching for?

One day in the 21st century, a gate opened in the middle of the Ginza district of Tokyo. Out of the gate poured soldiers and strange creatures, and they soon made Ginza look like an image of hell. The gate apparently connected Japan to another world, a world with a militant empire and many supernatural creatures. The Japanese Self-Defense Force decided to send a small group, led by a soldier who's also an otaku, into the other world on a reconnaissance mission. They're meant to learn what they can about the empire (and its plans), the world, and the people.

They're hardly in the world yet, though, when they come across a village destroyed by a giant fire-breathing dragon. The only survivor is an unconscious elven girl they find hidden in a well. Now they feel like they must warn the nearby towns about the dragon, and do what they can to help. On the way, they'll meet more magical, female companions, and learn more about this dangerous new world.

Although Baba Sho is only in high school, he has more responsibilities than any of his classmates. When his classmate and girlfriend, Sumire, gave birth to his baby, the school baseball team he was on stopped becoming a hobby and became the only way he might be able to provide for his family in the future. Without a contract from a professional baseball team, Sho has no idea how he can support his child. Sumire, on the other hand, has had to quit school using the lie that she was ill and hide her child even from her closest friends while living under the roof of her disapproving father. Sho, trying to impress the pro-league scouts, has made him reckless and a selfish player which has started to alienate his team, the same group of people he was great friends with just only a year ago.

This manga features violent stories of passion and swordsmanship, set in the Kan'ei era (1624-1643). It opens with a match between two damaged swordsmen. Irako is blind, and his opponent, Fujiki, is missing an arm. It has been decreed that their match will be fought with metal swords, instead of wooden, so one of these men will die. The story that led them to this final match, and gave them their handicaps, involves ambition, the selection of the heir for a dojo, and the passion of two women-- one the dojo master's daughter, and the other his lover.

This is the story of a group of four secret heroes. They catch criminals before the police, and leave them neatly restrained for arrest. One of these heroes is Zane, a lawyer by day and defender of justice by night. Another is Al, an attractive ladies' man. Another is Mana, a 33-year-old man who appears to be a child and who has robotic hands. Last but not least is Nisu, a cheerful girl who has the powerful ability to trap people inside of Polaroid pictures. The four of them carry on with their life together, defeat criminals, and do their best to keep their vigilante identities top secret!

History classes have never interested Saburo. He never saw the point of learning something that happened in the past, let alone a few hundred years ago. But when he falls off a wall, he travels through a wormhole and ends up in 16th century ancient Japan. He meets a very young Oda Nobunaga, one of the most influential figures in Japanese history, who turns out to be identical in appearance as Saburo. The real Nobunaga, sick of the castle life and wanting to travel, orders Saburo to take his place. Without knowing how to get back to his time, Saburo tries to make sure history isn’t rewritten for the infamous Oda Nobunaga.

Not a lot of people know that one of the most talented and ruthless Mah Jong players in the city is a young high school boy. Kei is a teenager of few words, but his observation skills, unwavering will and experience in the game allows him to survive in a world full of powerful, rich and dangerous characters. Kei is currently hiding a girl named Amina who has entered the country illegally and protecting her from being deported. He spends his days sleeping through class and his nights playing high stakes Mah Jong, waiting for when a worthy opponent arrives.

This is kind of a crude parody of the central murder in Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment." A young Russian punk cheerfully considers axe-murdering an old woman who runs a pawn shop. He has a dream in which the old woman dismembers and attempts to rape him, which gives him some hesitation. There's also a mysterious naked woman named Mayo who has somehow also seen this dream, and who watches him unobserved while he reconsiders his murder.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
Menou no Ryuu was my favorite this week. It's an incredibly common premise, but the stories were cute and fun. I'm wondering if they're going to eventually address how terrifying Nisu's ability to trap people in polaroids could be. Gate starts off very slowly, but it seems like it might have a neat story to tell. It might end up just turning into a kind of magical harem manga, though. I put the 'mature' tag on there just for violence in this one (a lot of people seem to get chopped up in war).
Here's what vyc had to say:
Tohai - Although I dont know Mah Jong, the plot line and suspense of each game has made this series interesting even for a non gambler like me.

Betsu Ma - new kind of sci-fi series that I thought was really interesting and caught my eye immediately. The plot is awesome but unpredictable and the characters are easily likable. The author has done a good job at making the reader immerse into the world extremely easy and keep you there.
My opinion:
I'd be interested in checking out another manga take on Crime and Punishment in Tsumi to Batsu by MAN F Gatarou, although I don't know if I'd be really interested in a parody of that story... The other Tsumi to Batsu story might be a better choice...
