This past week gamers around the world have been sitting on the edge of their seats as the E3 expo took over the Los Angeles Convention Center once again. Over the course of the past few days several new game releases, gameplay videos, release dates and trailers have swept over the gaming community. Here are some of my picks from the week.
EA started off the week on Sunday, giving us insight to Battlefield 1, Titanfall 2, Mass Effect: Andromeda and the future of new Star Wars games. Bethesda’s conference was a revival extravaganza. Quake Champions will follow the footsteps of Quake 3 as a fast paced arena shooter multiplayer. New Prey, Dishonored 2, Fallout 4 DLC and a remastered version of Skyrim are also on the horizon.
Microsoft confirmed pre-existing rumours and announced Scorpio, a completely new console to be released in 2017. This hardware monster will be able to run games in true 4K resolution and at 60 fps.
Sony unveiled Hideo ”Metal Gear Solid” Kojima’s new project: Death Stranding, starring Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus. Also the highly anticipated The Last Guardian got a release date, October 25th. Last Guardian is from the creators of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus and the spiritual successor of the two games.
Nintendo trusted the appeal of its flagships as their focus was on the next part of the Zelda-franchise. The 19th instalment of the main series is titled The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It is the first Zelda game to feature a fully open world, leaving the player with little instruction and allowing them to discover new secrets at their own pace, much like the very first title of the franchise. So far the footage looks absolutely stunning!
Another one of Nintendo’s corner stones also had a big impact on this year’s E3. New gameplay footage of Pokémon Sun & Moon was showcased. The major reveal here was the new battle mode, Battle Royale, where four trainers clash with each other at once. New Pokémon - Yungoos, Pikipek and Grubbin - were also introduced. Last but not least, Nintendo revealed further information on the augmented reality Pokemon game Pokemon GO. The mobile game is expected to be released at the end of July on Android and iOS devices.
For us at Mangahelpers, with a focus on all things Japanese, some of the most anticipated footage has been that of the highly anticipated titles Final Fantasy XV, Tekken 7 and Persona 5. We otakus got our fair share of goodness from the E3. Among many things, the mystery visual novel √Letter was confirmed for a Western release and Kentaro Miura's dark fantasy manga Berserk is also going to have its own adaptation in the Dynasty Warriors series. Berserk Warriors is expected to come out later this year.
