New Manga Shout Out: 11/26/12 - 12/2/12

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. This weekly article introduces you to manga that are new and/or have not been scanlated yet. This week features a town connected to another world, synchronized swimming and high class young ladies that are completely out of touch with the world. Maruyama Mahiru hs moved back to a town she used to live in when she was very small to attend high school. She doesn't really remember much about the town, but it recently went through some drastic changes. Five years ago, the town became connected to some other world, which the townspeople refer to as "docca." Since then, many different fantastical creatures have leaked through into our reality. For instance, Mahiru's first day of school is canceled due to a dragon!

On her way to school, Mahiru meets an older schoolmate, Kanda Rekka, who is involved in the management of the "docca" problem, and helps her track down a gorgeous prince. He remembers almost nothing about himself or where he came from. Mahiru would like to have an ordinary high school life, but she soon finds herself roped into helping out the new prince and joining the "docca" team!

This is a collection of three short stories: Gouyoku na Megami, Shokei Toshi, and Kootta Namida. The title story, Gouyoku na Megami, tells a story of the cost of the obsession with female youth and beauty. The main character, high schooler Miharu, is not especially pretty. She lives with her mother and older sister who have their own appearance-related issues, and a father who is almost always at work. One day, Miharu makes friends with a beautiful classmate named Asaka, who is the daughter of one of her mother's former classmates. The pretty teenager insists that her mother is planning to do a brain transplant and steal her body, and that she needs help to prevent it. Could such a bizarre accusation be true?

Terasawa is a member of the water polo club, but he's not really interested in the rules of the game. He cares more about swimming and 'performing' at the matches in an elegant and beautiful way, which does not always cause him to be a helpful member of the team. While swimming in a lake at an amusement park, he meets an extremely muscular old man who has drastically more elegant and powerful swimming skills. Spurred on by this discovery, Terasawa is even more dedicated to becoming an elegant swimmer, even if it does annoy his teammates.

While he's getting in some solo practice, he has an exchange with a girl from the swim team, named Amano, that changes his goals. She tells him of the existence of 'synchronized swimming.' This sport sounds exactly like what Terasawa has always wanted, and he's determined to start a club immediately! However, he still has a responsibility to the water polo club. Will he be able to achieve his dreams of swimming beautifully?

In a hidden school surrounded by mountains, young ladies of good families are taught everything a high class lady needs to know. They are also completely cut off from the outside world, keeping them sheltered and innocent. However, a problem has come up recently-- more and more graduates are failing to cope with the modern world after graduation. To deal with this problem, they've decided to kidnap a male commoner student, and enroll him as a student. They hope that this will be a gentle way to introduce the girls to the outside world.

Kagurazaka Kimito is chosen for this dubious honor, mostly because he seems utterly average. However, the school leaders also seem to have concluded he's a homosexual with a muscle fetish. When Kimito hears that the alternative may be castration (to protect the girls' purity), he eagerly plays along with this misconception. Now he'll just have to survive the attention of many high class young ladies that are completely out of touch with the world!

My favorite this week was Gouyoku na Megami, I liked how the first story especially wove together many subplots to form the main focus of the tale. Docca was also pretty cute, and seems open-ended enough to have some really creative stories.


My opinion:
Nothing really piqued my interest this week... ^^;;
