New Manga Shout Out: 10/21/13 - 10/27/13

Welcome to the next New Manga Shout Out. This weekly article introduces you to manga that are new and/or have not been scanlated yet. This week features a girl who's been kidnapped, a girl with a mysterious tail attached, and humans with super powers. Remember, if you like any of the series, favorite them. An average of 260 humans are born every minute. On the 9th minute of the 9th hour of September 9, 2024, only 18 individuals were born. On that day and minute, 18 stars shined brightly in the sky, and these 18 children were chosen by prophecy to be the saviors of mankind.

Nitarazu Hisoka wakes up, completely naked and surrounded by cold metal. Others lay around him, all approximately similar in age. As they attempt to grasp their situation, they find themselves face to face with the leader of a cult-like religious group known as "Kreetha." The explanation they receive from this religious group shatters any hope for a normal life for these young individuals. Now, they must survive the trials laid before them, while coming face to face with each others' pasts.

One day, an ordinary high school girl named Minase Youmu is kidnapped up in the mountains. Her kidnappers claim that she has taken some kind of "medicine" and that there's no going back. Luckily, though, a former detective named Sanpouji Kotetsu happens to pass by where she is being held, and rescues her. Kotetsu hastily gets the underage girl to the police, where the investigator Naru Asuka and her 'psychic' partner Hayama Reiichi take on the girl's case. Asuka, Reiichi and Kotetsu have to figure out who took Youmu--and what was done to her--before it's too late (if it isn't already)!

One sad day, Aiko finds herself working at the funeral of a boy she once liked. His wife preceded him in death, and he left behind a little boy. That little boy moves into the care of his older brother, an unkempt man that seems less than thrilled with the prospect of caring for a child. Aiko is concerned for the well-being of the kid so she inserts herself into the situation.

It turns out that the child's new guardian, Karibe Kiyomi, is actually a popular mangaka. Few know this, however, because he writes his long-running shoujo manga under the pen name of "Karibe Mariko." In order to make sure the child is okay, Aiko agrees to an unusual deal with Kiyomi and his manager. She'll let them arrange her love life, in order to research situations for Kiyomi's manga. Does Aiko really understand what she's getting herself into?

Hana has a mysterious tail installed directly into her spine that allows her to perform superhuman feats. This tail was installed into her by the professor known as Prof. Oyamada who raised Hana from birth. Ever since then, she grew up with her villagers in the small island and helped hunt for food for everyone using her tail.

One day, a mysterious boy washed ashore on her island. The boy claims to be the prince of Garlandra, the country where Prof. Oyamada hails from. He also claims that Hana's tail is actually his property and wants to take it home with him. Begrudgingly, Hana decides to follow Anthony. With Prince Anthony, Hana's battle-filled adventure begins.

An alien species wanted to start a revolution against their oppressors, and they think they may have found the power in humanity to accomplish their goals. They discovered that humans have latent superpowers, and so they began to abduct them and awaken their abilities. Unfortunately, the humans' abilities were not very useful for their purposes---at least not until they found the destructive power of #214.

#214 is actually a young woman named Hoshi Yumako, who has no interest at all in the aliens' revolution. The abduction and powers have seriously screwed up her life, and all she wants is to be able to live a normal life. Pursued by the aliens, she tries to work part-time and keep her powers from ruining everything. However, she knows she's not the only one out there; she might find allies among the empowered rejects of the aliens' experiments.

To begin his college career, Mashiro Masuguchi begins his life alone at the apartment "Wakuraba." He finds himself excited and lonely at the same time at his new room, but the loneliness only lasts for a short time. He finds that his neighbors each have very colorful personalities and are, for the most part, extremely friendly. Mashiro begins his life as part of the Wakuraban family.

This is what tethysdust said this week:
Star Light Woman is not an especially unique premise, but it seems to be taking it in an interesting direction. I'd be curious to see what kinds of 'useless' powers some of the aliens' rejects have. Renai Mangaka pretty much mixes and matches a lot of clichés of the genre (small child orphaned and unwanted, mangaka manipulating someone into helping with 'research', etc.), but I think it would probably be enjoyable for people who enjoy those particular types of stories. The Cthulu one was very strange. It takes a while for the supernatural bits to show up, but they do appear eventually. It seems like there's a current trend in making manga about cthulu mythos+schoolgirls+comedy, but this one was a bit more interesting than others I've read (and seems to take a slightly more serious turn, eventually).

Here's what DrCoke had to say:
Wakuraban is a nice and light read. The characters are all lovable and colorful, while the story is simple. Shippo! has potential, but I feel as though the plot is a little rushed.

My opinion:
I wonder what sort of explanation the cult leader gives in Charon. I don't understand how giving an explanation of "taking some medicine" is an excuse for being kidnapped in Minase Youmu to Hontou wa Kowai Cthulhu Shinwa, unless the drug is some sort of experimental drug and she's part of an experiment. I'm a bit curious as to why she was abducted. I'm also sort of interested in seeing what kind of "love situations" occur in Renai Mangaka, how Aiko will deal with the situations, and how their manga will turn out.
