BOX: あらすじ 修行のために訪れた大亀流の隠れ里“戎簾の里”で我間達は、「里の番人・麟太郎から一本取る」という課題を与えられる。突破のヒントは「気配を見る」こと。我間達は果してこの課題を突破できるのか―――。
Summary: Gama and co. have gone to the Ogame school’s hidden “Juuren Village”. There they are given the task of scoring a blow on the village’s guardian, Rintarou. Their hint for doing so is to “see your opponent’s signs”. Will Gama and Zenmaru actually be able to overcome this task------?

Zen：気配ってのはつまり攻撃のための予備動作や重心の移動さらには視線や音
“Signs” refer to the preparatory movements, shifts in center of gravity, glances, and sounds that go into making an attack
Zen：そんなモンから発せられる
That kinda stuff is what cause them to be given off
Author’s note：簡単な例を挙げるとパンチの前の腕「引く動作」で次にパンチが来ることが読める
A simple example: you can tell a punch is coming by the pulling-back motion of the arm prior to the punch
Zen：オメェの話を聞いて麟太郎からそれをほとんど感じないことに気付いた・・・・
After hearing what you had to say, we realized that we didn’t sense any of that stuff from Rintarou....

The greater your level of mastery, the better you are at suppressing your signs

Also, after finally learning what the author means by the term I have translated as "presence", I'm considering retconning it to a different word, but am not sure what that word would be. If I do decide to retcon in the future, I will make a note under my most recent translation about it. The problem is coming up with a single term that can be used with verbs like "see", "feel", "sense", "perceive", and carry a sense of vagueness and mystery that makes it non-obvious to the uninitiated.

Second, my first understanding of the term and the pictures made me think that something like "aura" or "air" could work well. The first might be overused, though it might fit. "Air" is rarely used in this sense, but that might be a result of its tendency to confuse some readers. But, if the word relates more to timing an opponent's actions, then the ability/perception is something more akin to Sherlock Holmes ability to notice and concurrently analyze small discrepancies in situations and react accordingly. In that case, and to keep the mystery you want to retain, presence might be replaced with a conjured connotation to a familiar word, like "tense." You could use it to explain noticing the muscle firings in the moment immediately prior to a person acting. It could also be used in agreement with a true definition related to timing. Thus, you get a combination of "What's noticing tense mean?" and the realization of "Oh, he's referring to timing and perceiving the body movements that are imperceptible to most everyone."
Maybe that helps. Maybe not.
