Gintama 563
Runaway Kotarou.
That moment when one puts aside translating because they were going to do something with someone, but end up getting nothing done because said someone never showed up leaving the translation to be done in a half asleep fog.
Also I have a plurk now, so feel free to friend me there and stuff.
(Side text- During the patriot war era....)
GINTAMA
???: Dude, what are you even saying?
Without a doubt it's Gintoki-san.
Did you not see the way he wrecked shit today...?
He totally caught that general with his pants down, and boldly at that.
Even the warrior clans couldn't keep up with his demonic fighting style.
Enemy or ally, no one can hold a candle to him.
The strongest of the four devas is...
Without a doubt, Sakata Gintoki!
002
Dude 2: Are you off bro?
If we didn't have the Kiheitai as back up, that surprise attack wouldn't have worked?
Clearly the strongest is the one who's battle tactics put even modern weapons to shame.
The one who's millitary prowress sank not one, but two ships before one could blink..
Our commander, the Kiheitai leader Takasugi Shinsuke!
Dude 3: Are you people completely mental?
Did you conveniently forget that it's thanks to this side that there's a war to begin with?
Someone has to pay for soldiers, upkeep and weapons and everything else right?
So then logically speaking the strongest is...
The Dragon of Katsurahama, Sakamoto Tatsuma---
Dude: Okay, but no.
Dude2: Yeah I'm like pretty sure that he's not even close.
Though if we're talking just being a loudass lecher for money, that guy is unbeatable.
003
Dude: ….Yeah, sorry I guess I got ahead of myself.
(Handwritten- There are times where he's a few decibels closer to tolerable though.)
Guy: So then it's either Gintoki-san or Takasugi-san who's the strongest.
What about Katsura-san?
Dude: Hm...
About that guy..
To be frank, I know next to nothing about him.
Well, there's how he'd reign in Gintoki-san and Takasugi-san whenever they'd really go wild. In that sense, he's kind of the leader of the Four Devas.
Yeah, I get that. I mean I haven't got any issues with his organization skills as a general, and his leadership of the Rebel army is great, but...
Taking that into consideration it's still really quite difficult to weigh his strength as an individual and as a fighter in this war.
He prefers “defensive tactics”, rather than bold offensive manuvers.
So he tends to step aside and it's Gintoki-san and others take the spotlight and consequently the glory.
Though really, “defensive tactics” totally come off as “cowardly moves” sometimes...
Dude: Hey! Watch what you say!
Dude 2: It's not like that man, I'm just saying...
004
Dude 2: He's the type who counterattacks rather than forging forward with the first move.
(Sfx- Gogogo rmmmble)
Dude 2: Even the enemy mocks his fighting style, have you heard?
“Runaway Kotarou”.

SORACHI HIDEAKI
Lesson 563: Runaway Kotarou.
(Side text- He bears two names...)
005
Shoukaku: Pretty sure...
That's what they call you, eh?
I figured you'd gather your men and flee a while back,
But to be the shield that they run away under....I'd have never guessed it.
Katsura: If I couldn't at least identify fights I could win and fights that it would be better to retreat from,
I wouldn't have such a moniker.
Shoukaku: I getcha. So you've made your peace with this?
Katsura: I have no intention of making peace.
Instead I'm resolving myself.
I shan't run from you.
006
{Zura? A coward?}
{You guys don't get nothin' do ya?}
Sakamoto: Gintoki and Takasugi would laugh if they heard that.
Dude: Sakamoto-san! How long have you been there?
Sakamoto: Uh...just now?
Yer sayin' he's got fewer achievements than Gintoki and Takasugi?
If ya think that, it's only cause ya haven't been lookin'.
007
Sakamoto: In a war, it's tougher ta be the loser than tha winner.
If you ain't got the guts to know when to throw in tha towel then you end up losin more than ya gain, and regroupin' gets to be difficult.
Sure it ain't the glorious part o' tha war when you're bustin enemy heads, but Zura's fightin' too..
Just that his fight is tha one that protects us, his comrades.
Ya can't leave that responsibility to just anyone. It's gotta be the dude most suited to war.
Guy: Th—then you're on Team Katsura-san when it comes to discussing who's strongest?
(Handwritten- I'm still on Team Gintoki-san, sorry!)
Sakamoto: Ya still yammerin' on 'bout that?
Well...
You guys wouldn't get it unless he shed that cowardly side of his...
When he was a youngun, he lost his folks to illness.
Their mansion was snatched up, and he and his Granny were walkin' the streets for some time.
(Grave- Katsura family grave.)
{Kotarou..}
008
Grandmother: When it comes to leading an army...
What do you think is the most important trait for a general have?
Even supposing he is a strong warrior,
And that his military tactics are sharp,
If his head is taken, the war ends with him as the loser.
If the general dies, he cannot protect his men, his soldiers, his country....nothing.
So the general...
must be the most cowardly person on the battlefield.
He must be more prudent, cautious, and fearful than anyone else. His top priority is to survive.
So Kotarou...
You needn't be ashamed of your tears.
009
{It is pefectly fine to cry...to be a weakling...}
{For as long as the general lives...}
{As long as you live...}
{Our family will not fall into ruin.}
{Let them ridicule you as a coward.}
{Just live on, Kotarou.}
{No matter what ill words or will they bear toward you...}
{We know that you are a splendid general.}
Sakamoto: Eventually Granny died too, and he had not a single other relative. He was just a kid, and already tha head of the Katsura family.
He shouldered that responsibility, and wore the coat of a coward on his back.
010
Ladies: I've heard that child has a reputation of being quite shrewd.
I've heard that he's been adopted as well...
A Samurai..
Is one who raises himself.
{Grandmother..}
{Being a general is tough.}
{I might be able to stay one step ahead of trouble..}
{By living on my own...}
{But loneliness is...}
{Always one step ahead of me.}
011
{One cannot live through the night as a coward.}
{So then I...}
{Will be a samurai both more cowardly and stronger than anyone else.}
{And I won't act alone...}
{I want to become,}
{A coward so strong...}
{That he can protect his comrades,}
{Who make it through the night with him.}
012
Sakamoto: In order to carry on his family line...
And protect his buds..
He fought on and on as a coward...
And people started callin' him Runaway Kotarou.
Though, ya know what?
If a general that he could rely on to hold everythin' for him came,
Or he had to bet everything on one fight to win,
against an enemy he can't beat.
I think ya might learn somethin' about the true name...
of a man who cast off his cowardice.

You and I should duke it out every once in a while.
Katsura: Huh?
Who's Zura?
Gintoki: Obviously I'm referring to you. D'yknow how annoying it is to say Katsura all of the time?
Katsura: All it's lacking is a “Ka”! Leave that where it is and respect people's names!
Gintoki: Whatevs. Listen, are we gonna do this or not?
I'm getting bored fighting that asshole. It's getting to a point where I can predict my wins before they happen.
Takasugi: You still lost 56 times in comparison to my 57 wins. That means I'm ahead.
Anyway, you'd do better not wasting your breath on him.
Apparently a general like him is too high and mighty to bother with us commoners and our lowly personal deputes.
Katsura: It's as he says. Just be happy you're not injured.
(Sfx- Zaaah dsssh)
Gintoki: Alllrighty.
Then I'll take over that whole “general” shtick from you for a bit.
017
Katsura: Huh?
Gintoki: It's like he said, man. You can't do anything cause you're somesorta general, yeah?
Then I'll be your general.
So then when I'm around...
You'll be Zura.
Katsura: W—What are you talking about?
Gintoki: Then you can be a commoner and have common personal fights.
Then when he's with you, you be general.
Takasugi: Don't assign me stuff on a whim, dammit.
Gintoki: But if we divy up this jazz it's less work.
Okay, you get Monday-Wednesday, Zura will take Thursday to Saturday. I guess I'll take a Sunday or two if I'm up to it.
{Monday: Takasugi// Tuesday: Takasugi// Wednesday: Takasugi// Thursday: Zura// Friday: Zura// Saturday: Zura// Sunday: Break.}
Takasugi: Don't start a friggin' shift system! (Smaller text- And when the hell do you actually do anything?!)
Gintoki: So what is a general? And what does he make an hour? Cause i'm tryin' to get paid.
Takasugi: You don't get paid! In fact you're the guy paying people!
Gintoki: Ohhh, so you mean like a general store.
Takasugi: What does that even mean?! A general store might have a store manager, but this and that aren't the same!
(Sfx- Gonyo Gonyo yammer yammer)
{I see...}
{That's how it is..}
(TN- Gintoki says “Tenshou” and the word for store manager is “Tenchou”. The “shou” comes from “Shogun” which is the word for “general.”
018
Katsura: Draw your sword.
(Sfx- Hyaaan wfft)
Katsura: I wonder if you two are capable of being generals?
Assume your stance,
And I will ascertain your suitability for this position.
{You guys...}
{Were always like that.}
Gintoki: Now you're talking! Lets do this Zura!!
Katsura: It's not Zura, but Katsura!!
(Sfx- Gogogogo rmmmble)
Shoukaku: Whatta shame.
With skills like yours, you could have been one of the twelve division bosses.
But I did have a blast,
