Chapter 4: A Familiar Woman
[Insert text: That place with the red wheel turning in the sky...?!]
[Side text: A white-haired, skull-faced woman appears, and a countdown to death suddenly begins! How terrifying... what on Earth is going on?!]
SkullWoman: Right. / Well, then... // You will die within the next three days. // There is only one way for you to avoid your fate! // You must make an offering at the legendary instrument shelter. // Dun-dun-du~~~n!
Sakura: A dream...? // (What an odd dream... // And that place... // With the red wheel in the sky...)
[Side text: Character Profiles // Rokudou Rinne: Sakura's classmate. A "shinigami" who guides souls that can't pass on to the Wheel of Samsara? Swathed in mystery. // Mamiya Sakura: She was spirited away as a child, and has been able to see ghosts ever since.]
Sakura: (That was... the world where Rokudou-kun took me before.)
Rika: Listen...! / I had this really scary dream! // There was this woman... like a skeleton... // She said I was going to die within three days...
Friend: Huh? That dream... // I had it too...
Students: So did I. // She said to make an offering to the instrument shelter... // Me too, me too!
Sakura: (The whole class had the same dream...?!)
Sakura: (Could it be...)
Students: Here it is - the legendary instrument shelter. // Does a banana work as an offering...? // That's freaky... // They're disappearing even as we put them in...
Sakura: (I knew it... Rokudou-kun...)
Rinne: Get off me, Mamiya Sakura. / I'm busy.
Rika: Oh - Sakura-chan.
Friend: Are you here to make an offering?!
Sakura: Don't be fooled by that nonsense, guys!
Rika: Did Sakura-chan just...?
Friend: She just walked by in an incredibly odd way.
[Box: When wearing the Yomi no Haori, Rokudou Rinne cannot be seen by ordinary people.]
Rinne: Dream? // What are you talking about?
Sakura: Oh, don't play dumb with me. // I can't believe you... threatening everyone in their dreams, trying to rustle up offerings...
Rinne: Unfounded accusations. / Why would I do a thing like that?
Sakura: Well, who else could it have... // !
Sakura: (H... Huh...? // This woman...?)
Granny: Gue~~~~ss who!
Sakura: (Huh...? // "Gra...)
Granny: I thought I told you...
Granny: ...to stop
calling me that~~~~!
Sakura: (The woman from the dream this morning...? // But... // I feel like I've met her somewhere before that...)
Rinne: Stop that! You're hurting me, damn it!
Granny: And to think I came because I was worried about you... // Rinne, you're having a little trouble getting by, aren't you? // Come and live with me, why don't you?
Rinne: I can't do that. // Just leave me alone.
Granny: But you're my one and only grandson...
Sakura: ("Grandson"...? // This woman is Rokudou-kun's grandmother...?) // So young...
Granny: Hm?! / What was that?!
Sakura: No, I... was just thinking you were rather young...
Granny: Oh...! // Hohohohohohohohohohohoho... you really think so~? // ...Wait, you can see me~~?!!
Rinne: That's Mamiya Sakura. She's a little strange. // More importantly, all this about threatening my classmates in their dreams... // Was that you, Granny?!
Granny: Stop calling me that.
Granny: Well, of course it was me. // I thought you might appreciate a little help, that's all.
Rinne: Nobody asked you to help!
Granny: Oh... / Well, in that case... // The~re we go! / My, how tasty-looking.
Rinne: What are you doing?
Granny: Confiscating there, of course! // They're my spoils, after all.
Rinne: Wait! / At least leave a little...!
Sakura: Rokudou-kun, wait...!
Rinne: What are you doing, Mamiya Sakura?! // Don't follow me! // This is a place forbidden to living human beings!
Sakura: But I've... / ...been here before. // I don't know when if was... / ...but before I ever met you... // I've been here once, a long time ago...
Rinne: Mamiya Sakura! // She's gone...
Sakura: Whe~~~~w... // I thought I was a goner... // ...Still, this isn't exactly great... // Where... is this place? // It looks... like some kind of festival...
Stallkeeper: Fancy some afterlife souvenirs~~~?
[TN: "Meido no miyage"? *flashbacks to Haruhi-chan OP* Apparently "meido no miyage" ("afterlife souvenirs") is a set phrase, referring to the kind of memories that allow you to die happy. The idea being that memories are the one "souvenir" you can take with you to the afterlife. Obviously this is playing on that, since they're selling, er, actual souvenirs... in the afterlife ~_~]
Granny: What~?! / You brought that girl along with you?
Rinne: We got separated...
Granny: Oh, you are hopeless... // I'll find out where she is for you, so you go and pick her up, all right? // ...... // This isn't too good...
Rinne: Where is she?! // That girl... // It looks like she's wandered into the All-Done Entrance.
Rinne: The All-Done Entrance?!
Granny: That's right... // The place people pass through... // ...when they have lived their lives to the full, and died with no regrets. / It's just that once you're there... // ...you tend to get caught up in the mood of satisfaction, and head straight for the Wheel of Samsara without thinking about it...
Sakura: Ahhhh, this is nice...
Ferryman: You're rather young... are you sure about this?
Granny: She's already crossing the Sanzu River.
[TN: Japanese Buddhist tradition, similar to the Greek River Styx; as you'd expect, it's the path to the underworld.]
Rinne: You mustn't, Mamiya Sakura! // To go there... is to die!
Sakura: Ah... // (Is that... the Wheel of Samsara...? // It looks like a great big red Ferris wheel...) // ...Huh? // (I feel like... I've done this before, a long time ago...)
[Side text: Sakura's got herself caught up in afterlife sightseeing, but what's this déjà vu?! Next issue, Sakura's childhood memories are revived!]
