Chapter 71: Jump and the Wind
Page 2
Muramatsu: Hey...
Why is it that all ski jumping platforms are in remote hills?
Muramatsu: Like behind the skiing hills or something...
Muramatsu: Even though we're on a hill, not putting on any skis...
Muramatsu: And walking to get on lifts feels really inappropriate.
Yoda: Is that so?
Yoda: We're getting on now.
Muramatsu: Sigh...
Muramatsu: Wearing normal clothes on a lift while everyone else has skis on...
Muramatsu: Somehow feels really humiliating...
Page 3
Speaker: 72 meters.
Muramatsu: Haaaah...
Muramatsu: We're finally here...
Yoda: Thanks to you lagging behind, the first round has already started...
Page 4
Yoda: Go to the reception office for me.
Muramatsu: What a pain~~
Yoda: Why you...
Yoda: Hm?
Yoda: It's Teranouchi.
Teranouchi: Yes!!
Page 5
Speaker: 96 meters!!
Yoda: Just like I thought, went past K point by a wide margin.
Yoda: Hm?
Yoda: Kourogi!!
Mikage: Ah...!
Yoda: Oh? Rooting for Nonomiya?
Mikage: That's right!! What's wrong with that!?
Mikage: Look, people from Okushin High are jumping next.
Yoda: Hm?
Page 6
Yoda: It's Shingu.
Shingu: Hah
Shingu: Hah
Sasamiya: I saw Shingu fall in front of my eyes last year, and he was carried away in an ambulance.
It was kidney rupture right? He sure recovered quickly.
Maoka: But apparently at the summer competition, he couldn't fly far because of his fear.
Sasamiya: Ah--- I guess that's to be expected...
Sasamiya: Even I get scared on the second jump after only getting a bit of crosswind on the first one.
Shingu: Hah----
Shingu: Hah----
Sasamiya: In the end...
Page 7
Sasamiya: It depends on whether he can overcome the fear of falling or not...
Yoda: This is...
Page 8
Yoda: He caught a good wind!!
Yoda: So high!!
Sasamiya: Woah----
Sasamiya: He's doing pretty well.
Page 9
Speaker: 98 meters!!
Shingu: Hah...
Shingu: Hah!!
Nonomiya: Wow...
Nonomiya: He landed very close to hill size...
Amatsu: ...
Yoda: Shingu.
Looks like you finally got over the incident.
Page 10
Shingu: It's not like I...
Gave up on inter high or anything.
Shingu: I'm going for the win.
Yoda: ...Well then.
Yoda: Now...
Yoda: It's Shiriya's turn.
Page 11
Gobou: ...
Gobou: What the hell...
Gobou: It's no good!!
Gobou: It changed to tailwind...
Yoda: Oh man...the wind is bad.
Muramatsu: Wind?
Yoda: Didn't I explain this to you before?
Ski jumping works with the same principles as flying a kite.
Yoda: If it's a head wind, it'll fly well. If it's a tailwind, it'll drop right away.
Muramatsu: I see...so how big of a factor is the wind?
Yoda: Hm...Let's see...
Yoda: Ability takes about 50%.
So that means the wind is about half too.
Muramatsu: What---!?
Muramatsu: It's all luck then!!
Yoda: But it's not like weaker participants can win with luck alone.
Page 12
Yoda: When the abilities are about equal---
The one who wins is usually the one favored by the gods.
Yoda: And that's what's so interesting about the sport.
It's always possible to have dramatic comebacks.
Yoda: No matter how much you practice, one wind can change the outcome.
But everyone competes knowing that they can't win against nature.
Yoda: That's why no one blames the result on the wind.
Yoda: When it's bad, the jumper will wait as long as possible within the time limit...
Yoda: Praying to god that the direction of the wind will change.
Gobou: ...Damn.
Gobou: The wind is still bad.
Gobou: Wait a bit longer...
Page 13
Gobou: I...Idiot!!
Why did you start!?
Gobou: It's still a tailwind right now!!
Gobou: What were you thinking!?
Guy #1: He started just now without sensei's signal right?
Guy #2: Yeah.
Shingu: Even though the wind is bad...
Shingu: What is he...
Page 14
Nothing
Page 15
Yuuta: Huh!?
Shingu: ...
Shingu: It's so...
Shingu: Big!!
Sasamiya: Oi oi, he won't land properly at this rate!!
Sasamiya: He jumped too far!!
Page 16
Yoda: !?
Yoda: He...he landed...!!
Sasamiya: He lost his balance, but with that kind of wind...
He jumped purely with his own power...
Maoka: ...
Mikage: It seems like he just did a really nice jump...
Yoda: ...Yeah.
Yoda: The distance of a "good jump", to the K point, is 90 meters.
And the limit for this hill is 100 meters...
Speaker: And the distance is---
Page 17
Speaker: 110 meters!!
Yuuta: ...No way...
Shingu(thought): Unbelievable.
Shingu(thought): To jump over HS in that wind...
Shingu: Emperor!! Why did you jump without sensei's signal...
Shingu: And when it was still a tailwind?
Emperor: Don't lug me together with the rest of you.
Page 18
My results have nothing to do with the wind.
