Script Notes: Powerful stuff.

On another note, I've got some random translations of the first three volumes of Suikoden III's manga sitting around. There was a scanlation movement a while back to re-release them in a digital format, but it sorta fell through. Anyone want them?

Translation Notes: "Mister" is an indirect nod to Mister Donut, a popular international chain of donut stores. "Thirty-One" is also a reference to Baskin-Robbins, which has also gone international being famous for its 31 house flavors of ice cream.

Translation Notes: The fruits of my cross-translation research into Orihime's lines? Inconclusive; Kubo just wrote her to be shallow all these past chapters and suddenly had her explode in fervor this week. I wonder if this is going to be a permanent change... Alas, the damsel in distress arc renews itself.

Anyway, being paranoid that I wasn't getting the right diction in the lines, I went back to previous chapters and other translations to see if I wasn't making Ulquiorra too chop-choppy and as a consquence, Orihime too subservient (because honestly, I never really translated her lines with any measure of passion like this). Her lines needed a shot in the arm, I thought, especially for the sheer gravity of the chapter's conclusion.

I can't say that I succeeded totally even with the help of other translations on the two characters. But I guess, like Orihime, this is all I can manage in the end.

(As pocketmofo said in his script, a GREAT chapter indeed.)

Nice work on Inoue's dialogue, Djudge! This was a good one indeed!

**I honestly try my best to make Ulquiorra sound like a cold, calculating jerk (which is pretty much the only way I can read his lines in Japanese). He speaks fairly formally and with quite a bit of authority. I'm not sure if I really capture that in my translations, but that's what I try and shoot for.

Do you also get that feeling that Orihime just wasn't really written all that deep? I never had to translate chapters prior to the end of the Soul Society arc before so I was a bit lost to remember if anything actually solid fell out of her mouth before.
#5. by pocketmofo ()
Posted on Jul 26, 2006
She never really struck me as that deep a character normally (since she's just a 15/16 year old Japanese schoolgirl so she can be pretty vapid), but judging by her decent grades I wanted her to have a little bit of a vocabulary when translating her lines. Most of her last rant really reflected her young side (wanting to go to Misudo and 31 flavors) but those last few lines were much deeper in my opinion so I tried to reflect that (and I think you did as well). At the end though, she was still speaking those deep lines like a 15 year old girl would so I can understand the difficulty in trying to capture both sides of that at the same time.

Her character from during and before the Soul Society arc was pretty airheaded, but I guess those last two lines were her chance to shine.

Great job Djudge. I don't know any japanese but from what you and pocketmofo were talking about you really captured (as usual) the chapter and orhime's emotion.

thanks so much for the translation!

...its obvious by the nature of your conversations that you both (Djudge and Pocketmofo) put alot of thought and interpretation into your translations - and it shows in the quality.

***how do you guys gain access to the script even before the RAW comes out? is it a trade secret? :omg

Well, it's definitely a refreshing feeling especially after all those fight grunts, taunts, and lengthy technique explanations.

I'm definitely in the mood for more plot exposition and character reinvention now.

EDIT: Here's a quick rundown of the whole process that I wrote up for another person who was wondering back when c226 was first released:

Quote:
Just to confirm how the whole shebang works:

1) A JP fan types up a summary or, if they feel like it, a script (usually of good quality) of the chapter and posts it on a website like Futaba (2ch) or a netabare/some other BBS somewhere on the web. As some of you have surmised, the main poster/moderator of spoiler content on 2ch is currently a user named "◆Kaien1LQ2M " or simply "Kaien." Keep in mind to remember the latter part of his tripcode, "1LQ2M" because there are various fake "Kaien's" swarming the Bleach threads on 2ch that like to post false summaries/scripts (I've fallen for this at least once). Additionally, there are fans that like to flood the thread with their own fantasy scripts that are sometimes mistaken for the official ones for that week in Weekly Jump. "◆Kaien1LQ2M" ALWAYS posts real scripts, hence his reliability.

2) If the official script isn't incoherent and uses the right kanji/doesn't get lazy and use hiragana/katakana for keywords and is complete than I'll take lift the JP text off the BBS and use it to prep a first draft of the EN translation (Usually by this point, the raw is 1 or 2 days away from hitting the net). For Bleach, the JP text is usually first posted in Japan around early Wednesday morning (PST) here and I get to it in the afternoon.

3) If Aki isn't around/cranky/asleep then the first draft gets posted here on MH with a [Draft] tag on it for everyone to read. On the other hand, if she is awake and grills me about all the mistakes I made that she can find then the script is posted without the tag or has it removed.

4) Finally, the raw should come out after the script => translation process; this is where I should put in a better effort in the whole translation procedure since it goes without saying that with the raw in hand, it's much easier to tailor lines to a panel and character's mannerisms when you have the final product in front of you. Plus, you can check for mistakes in the original JP script that was posted online a day or two beforehand. However, I'm quite lazy swamped and I usually let the scanlation teams edit the script as they please if they choose to use it. Otherwise, this is just 2/3 of the job since I don't do this last part; sue me.

And that, guys, is how a script is translated! If you want to hunt for scripts yourselves, try out the main weekly comics hub on 2ch over @ http://etc4.2ch.net/wcomic.

Additionally, I'd also like to add that because the JP script is just straight text, we translators have no idea where to put page breaks and what-not for scanlation teams.

very cool process - kinda like a 'behind the scenes' - except for Manga, not film.

so aside from leaking - on the internet - prior to its actual street date in Japan; the script also finds its way out (in Japan) - even before the RAW...pretty crazy stuff. :headscratch

Bleach c237 - Good Bye Halcyon Days
_________________________________________________
Translation Notes/Title Tie-in: Fitting diction here, 'halcyon' is another word for 'golden' or 'prosperous.' This would of course be a nod to Orihime's yearning for nostalgia and the yesteryear when everything was still quite sane compared to the present.
_________________________________________________

Actually, "halcyon days" most likely refers to a bird called the kingfisher, also known as "halcyon". The birds lay their eggs on the beach in mid-winter. The period of time when they lay and hatch their eggs is called "halcyon days" because the seas are calm and the weather is mild. So, in effect, "Good Bye Halcyon Days" is Kubo Tite telling us that the crap is hitting the fan and the calm before the storm is over. On the other hand, the eggs are hatching, so there's still hope for our heros. It's also interesting that the season corresponds. I just thought this was an interesting tidbit and wanted to share. ^^

you all know Ichigo is going to go after her like he did for Rukia.... instead of a Soul Society storyline it will be a Hueco Mundo story...

or maybe she will show up when the big battle begins and she will be different.

Good thing you pointed out the other (well, main really) definition for the word. The reason why I went with the secondary denotations for the term was because I didn't really see any reference for a kingfisher anywhere in the chapter. Did you see anything that directly alluded to the bird that I didn't?

Well, "halcyon days" itself is an expression that uses the kingfisher meaning of the word. The term evolved from what I posted previously into the current English expression that signifies nostalgia. Therefore, although kingfishers aren't referenced in the chapter, the fact that the world "halcyon" is used in the way it is makes the meaning of "halcyon" itself different from the definition given in the notes. It doesn't actually fit the diction, in other words.

Just as an aside though, the usage of 'halcyon' in the title as well as in the entry you provided still essentially point to 'sunnier days' that have passed us by. The fourth edition of the American Heritage dictionary stated the definition of the word to be 'prosperous' or 'golden' even when used in the similar term of 'halcyon years'.

In the end though, it's just a matter of semantics since both explanations arrive at the same definition of the term (still, it was worth it for the interesting trivia).

True, true, I just wanted to point it out. I'm a sucker for etymology, especially since knowing the longer detail of the expression tosses in a little foreshadowing / extra layer of meaning (i.e. the eggs and the winter connection). Thanks for the awesome translation by the way! :D

That particular line was an opening poem for v3 and not an actual canonical statement made in the manga.

Sure, it gives her a smidge of depth, but she never actually said it as far as I'm concerned (in fact, all the poems are really just implied thoughts and are never really referenced directly in the main plot).

A bit of another interesting note about Halcyon is the Greek (among other) mythological references to a woman that was turned into a kingfisher, which could possibly denote a period of change or transformation for Inoue herself in the near future. Though we've already seen her change character at least a bit in this chapter, so that guess could be not too far off... just a thought.

Inoue: ...That should be the last of it, I suppose. Really now, what would Rangiku-san and Toushiro-kun do without me...

(A nearby memo lists off various chores: dumping the trash and putting away leftovers. As she counts off the items on the agenda, the reader sees a strange bangle on her wrist.)

(We enter a flashback.)

Ulquiorra: This is now yours. Wearing the item will blanket you with a particular flux which can only be pierced by an Arrancar's senses. You'll be undetectable through any other means and gain the ability to phase through solid objects. Now wear it and refrain from ever removing it.

Ulquiorra: Your twelve hour furlough starts now. Choose one person to take leave of; but do not exchange partings directly. Should they know of your departure, our previous understandings will be annulled. Settle any outstanding affairs by midnight then proceed to the exfiltration point. Remember, you will only select one person.

(Inoue leaves her diary open and switches off the light. A close-up of the notebook reveals "Goodbye, Halcyon Days" written in the margins.)

Bleach c237 - Good Bye Halcyon Days
Translation Notes/Title Tie-in: Fitting diction here, 'halcyon' is another word for 'golden' or 'prosperous.' This would of course be a nod to Orihime's yearning for nostalgia and the yesteryear when everything was still quite sane compared to the present.

Hitsugaya: (Urahara Kisuke... Finally, I get to see the man with so many secrets seem to revolve around... He's been like that ever since the arrancar departed... though...I suppose we were fortunate that we only suffered this much after an Espada raid... I was too optimistic... The Arrancar look like they're ready to deply at anytime...! There's no time to waste, we've got to consolidate our assets too... But what how much more can we do if war is already this close...?)

Hatch: Well, now... I've bumped my limit... I can't really classify my powers as "healing" per se, they're more like "restoration." I can't just flaunt this around and make things like they were though, I need to know what they were like beforehand. So in Ichigo's case, I couldn't filter out the trace Arrancar elements left in his wounds... What you see here is as far as I can go in treating him.
Translation Notes: Literally speaking, there's some Arrancar spirit pressure/reiatsu still in Ichigo's system. It sounds as if it's some kind of poison almost in that it's inhibiting Hatch's restoration of Ichigo's pre-battle condition.

Hatch: ...I'd say that the fastest way to patch him up sooner is to isolate him from those who carry Hollow pressure. Take him home, and make sure he rests... that'd be my prescription.

Rukia: ...Ichigo... who were you hanging around with...? What are you trying to... learn from those people...!? And why did those Arrancar withdraw all of a sudden...!? I can't stand not knowing what's happening...!! Ehh, I'm just getting flustered like this... going nowhere... I should go cool off on the street...

Inoue: ...Heh... it's no use... I wanted this to be the last thing I ever freely did, Kurosaki-kun, I-I Had so many things I wanted to do... Teach at a school... Be an astronaut... Open a bakery... I even wanted to clean out an entire Mister Donut by myself... Heck, why not an entire Baskin-Robbins while I was at it!...
Translation Notes: "Mister" is an indirect nod to Mister Donut, a popular international chain of donut stores. "Thirty-One" is also a reference to Baskin-Robbins, which has also gone international being famous for its 31 house flavors of ice cream.

Inoue: Farewell

Translation Notes: The fruits of my cross-translation research into Orihime's lines? Inconclusive; Kubo just wrote her to be shallow all these past chapters and suddenly had her explode in fervor this week. I wonder if this is going to be a permanent change... Alas, the damsel in distress arc renews itself.

Sidetext/Fanning: A lonely confession... Made with somber feelings, but also an absolute conviction.

Thanks to both Djudge and pocketmofo for doing a bang-up job. Emotional chapter to say the least.

(Btw, Dj, I think the scanlation efforts on Suikoden III fell thru because it was published in English, I have the first 7 volumes XD )
