for this chapter, all lines go to our heroine, so it was easier to just omit speaking credits. Page numbers are continuous with the first chapter.
chapter 2: The Whale God
I am the "Hand's eye"
I am a performer with the gift of clairvoyance and foresight who travels between the sake houses of my noble patrons.
It's the job of a floating reed who has no parents nor family.
I've made many journeys.
It's nothing glamorous.
When I could no longer stay in one place all I could do was flee elsewhere.
However, as I continued this cycle,
before I knew it I had become a migrating bird.
One time, I was at the beach...
It's a whale.
Now you see, Whales are rather ugly fellows.
It had made a mistake, coming up on the beach. There was no way to help it.
Because of its weight, it couldn't breathe anymore. It was going to die.
You're suffering, aren't you.
Well, I can't return you to the open sea all by myself.
And if I call the fishermen here, they'll just decide to eat you.
Why are you crying?
With such a huge frame, it's just pitiful.
It's okay. If you're lonely, I'll be here.
I'll be right here, like this.
Look, the sky is so blue.
It looks like there's an ocean above your head.
I stayed with the whale until it could no longer breathe, telling it all kinds of stories.
Before any other people came, we parted.
Somehow, I felt like something was flying behind me.
So it was you.
You like me, I get it.
Go back home to the sky.
Don't follow me!
I said not to come!
Cut it out already!
The strange creature had somehow become attached to me.
What's more, these days I haven't been able to see him.
I'm relieved. I think he's finally gone to heaven.
Now, this is no good, sir.
You can't lay a hand on a storyteller.
What? I'm used to this sort of thing.
A little wantonness after sake happens all the time.
It's just one drunkard.
I can just smile and deal with him.
That was a little overkill.
Did you mean to save me?
You've certainly done a lot to take care of me, but...
It's not something you can laugh at!!
Well, now I'm in trouble.
All that's left is me and my flattened patron.
Why did you give me this to deal with?
