In true Detective Conan fashion, this chapter had a LOT of text.

Chapter 714

01

Title: File 714 The White Tiger
Text: When will the "Sleeping Conan" awaken!?

02

Ayumi: It's true!

Ayumi: You can see the symbol for sparrow!

Ayumi: Look. On top of the red pedestal.
Genta: So there might've been a bronze statue of a sparrow on here!

Mitsuhiko: Yeah, probably. The spot where it was is pretty old, but I think a sparrow statue was taken from here.
Ai: It wasn't a sparrow...

Ai: Vermilion is a type of red...If the symbol above the one for sparrow was the one for vermilion, then this was one of the legendary divine beasts that ruled over the four directions...
Ai: The Vermilion Bird...

Text in right margin: Haibara has found a clue to solving the mystery of the message left by Samizu Kichiemon.

03

Ayumi: Th-the Vermilion Bird...
Genta: The one that appears in a lot of video games...?
Mitsuhiko: The red bird that looks the Houou!

Ai: Yes...And the white pedestal to the right of the red pedestal probably had...
Ai: The White Tiger!

Ai: And continuing to the right, the black pedestal would be...
Ai: The Black Tortoise!

Ai: And on the green pedestal to the right of that and to the left of the red pedestal...
Ai: would have been a statue of the Azure Dragon.

Mitsuhiko: Wait a second! The "Azure Dragon"?
Genta: But that pedestal's green!

Ai: Azure originally referred to the color of verdant things like mountains and trees and other vegetation...
[TN: This is only true for the Japanese (and Chinese) words not the English one.]
Ai: so the Azure Dragon was originally green.

Ai: Those four divine beasts ruled over the four directions. The Vermilion Bird over south, the White Tiger over west, the Black Tortoise over north, and the Azure Dragon over east.
Ai: And the one in the center was...

04

Ai: The Qilin!
Ayumi: Ohh...

Ai: Well, in a lot of cases the one in the center was the Yellow Dragon instead of the Qilin.
Mitsuhiko: Then this message by Samizu Kichiemon...

Mitsuhiko: at the bottom of the pillar is...
Ai: It's a kind of after care for if the red, white, black, and green keys were stolen...

Ai: Where it says "Those wishing for and seeking after the Qilin without going through the proper means"...
Ai: It means "Those who want to get the Qilin's Horn without using the keys"...

Ai: And the flow mentioned in "should entrust themselves to the flow"...
Ai: means some kind of flow that changes the time or the place or something...

Ai: And it tells you to entrust yourself to that flow...
Genta: So is it saying that if you wait without doing anything the Qilin will come out of the pillar?
Mitsuhiko: No...

Mitsuhiko: If the four pedestals in the corners represent the four divine beasts...
Mitsuhiko: they relate to different colors and directions, right?
[TN: The diagram right of Mitsuhiko has the four divine beasts names in the circles with the compass direction written outside. So the top says "North" above the circle with "Black Tortoise" in the circle. East is "Azure Dragon", West is "White Tiger", and South is "Vermilion Bird".]

05

Ai: Right... It's saying to do something with the four pedestals in the order of a certain "flow".
Ayumi: There's no order to colors...
Mitsuhiko: Could it be to do something in the order: East, West, South, North?
[TN: This is the standard order to list the directions in Japan.]

Genta: But...what about the Touhoku region!? North is next after east.
[TN: Touhoku means "East-North"]
Ayumi: I think north comes first!
Ayumi: Because maps always write it at the top!

Ai: It looks like we can't figure it out just from directions... For one, both clockwise and counter-clockwise are types of "flows"...
Mitsuhiko: That's right... If only the four divine beasts had a proper order among them...

Ayumi: I bet Conan-kun would know something...
Genta: But he's been asleep this whole time...

Ai: Anyway, the way to get the Qilin statue out of the pillar is to turn the four keys in the keyholes on the four pillars at the same time...
Ai: It doesn't seem like there's a way to do something to the pillars in a certain order and not have to use the keys...

Ai: It's impossible for Kid to have done that by himself in the minute the power was out...
Ai: If he has companions here, he must have given them some kind of signal. We need to check on that...
Ayumi: Check on it how?

06

Ai: It's simple!
Ai: We had a TV crew here recording the whole thing on tape!

Masui: What?
Masui: You want to check the video and audio from when the power was out?

Masui: We can check it in the broadcasting van parked outside...
Shinkai: But why?
Ai: We want to check for any strange sounds or light...

Suzuki: It's true that some kind of signal would be needed to turn all four keys at the same time when it was pitch black...
Nakamori: Well, I don't mind, but there wasn't any strange noise...

Nakamori: And the only light I remember was from the stun gun when Kid knocked out the one with the glasses...
Nakamori: and from the children's lights when they went rushing over to him.

Suzuki: But there's a problem... I want to check the recording, but I don't want to let anyone who could be Kid out of here...
Shinkai: Then...how about we contact the broadcasting van and have them bring us a monitor or something and play the recording on it?

07

SFX: *wham* *wham* *wham*
Suzuki: If I put them on the wall like this, he can't do a thing about it!!

Suzuki: I win!!
Suzuki: This is when I stuck the four keys on the wall!

Nakamori: And this is the blackout right afterwards...

Nakamori: A-a blackout!?
Suzuki: Don't panic. I predicted this!!

SFX: Whooosh!
Ai: That's the sound of the wind and rain blowing in after the storm shutters were destroyed.
Ayumi: It really surprised me, so I put on my hood!
Genta: Me, too!
Mitsuhiko: So did I!

Nakamori: Shh! Watch quietly!
Ayumi, Genta, & Mitsuhiko: Okay!
Shinkai: Are you getting this!?
Masui: Y-yes! But it's pitch black, so you can't see anything...

Shinkai: And the sound!?
Hisumi: I'm gettin' it...

Shinkai: That's us...
Masui: Yeah...
Hisumi: Yup...

08

SFX: Beeep
SFX: Beeep
SFX: Beeep
SFX: Beeep

Ayumi: That's the sound meaning the electricity to the pedestals is being cut off, right?
Mitsuhiko: Yeah... They said it went off in the order: green, red, white, and black, so I was really nervous...
Genta: My heart was pounding because I had the last one!

Nakamori: Shh!
Genta, Ayumi, & Mitsuhiko: Shhhh.
SFX: *rumble*

Ai: That's the sound of the central pillar sliding up revealing the Qilin statue...
Suzuki: That's the sound of...
Nakamori: It couldn't be!?

Conan: Waaaah!
Ayumi: C-Conan-kun!?
Suzuki: That's the light of the stun gun...?

Suzuki: Hm? A light came on...
Ayumi (recording): Conan-kun, hang in there!!
Ayumi: I turned it on! I was worried because I heard Conan-kun yell...

Mitsuhiko: Th-the Qilin's Horn is gone!
Nakamori: It looks like the jewel was already stolen at this point...

09

Suzuki: Have the lights not been fixed yet!?
Nakamori: Calm down!! No one move from where you are!!
Shinkai: Wait. What's going on!?
Masui: Did Kid come!?
Hisumi: Dunno...

Nakamori: So there wasn't any strange noise or light...
Suzuki: Yes...If anything, there was only the light of the stun gun and the cry when the boy in the glasses was knocked out...

Suzuki: The sound of the pillar moving was before that cry...
Ai: But if that sound was a fake that Kid used...
Ai: and he had finished handing out the keys to his companions...

Ai: they could simultaneously turn the keys when we were drawn away from the pedestals...
Ai: by Edogawa-kun's cry...

Suzuki: That's true, but were you really protecting the keyholes on the pedestals before that?
Genta: Yeah, I was!
Ayumi: I had my arms spread out like this!
Mitsuhiko: I was leaning against the hole, covering it up!

Suzuki: Incidentally, who was guarding which pedestal?
Genta: I was guarding...

10

Genta: that black pedestal!

Mitsuhiko: I was in charge of that green pedestal!

Ayumi: I had that white pedestal!

Ai: And I was here at the red pedestal!
Suzuki: But you weren't afraid?
Suzuki: Even though it was a blackout, there was still electricity running through the pedestals.

Mitsuhiko: Oh, about that...
Nakamori: Hey, old man!

Nakamori: This floor is rotting in places, but is there iron plating in it like the walls?
Suzuki: No...
Suzuki: The floor, ceiling, and pillars in the corners had complicated devices in them, so we couldn't do anything to them.

Suzuki: Well, the area below the floor has wire mesh around it, so no one could escape that way!
Shinkai: Umm...

11

Shinkai: If Kid has companions here, then I know someone who's suspicious.
Suzuki: Hm?
Masui: The guy in charge of the sound!
Hisumi: Eh?

Masui: We were supposed to have a young staff member coming, but this guy came in his place...
Hisumi: L-like I said...That's because I couldn't get a hold of him all of a sudden...

Hisumi: And if you're going to bring that up, you're suspicious, too!!
Masui: Huh?

Hisumi: I heard about how the cameraman was supposed to be an underclassman of yours from college, but you, the veteran cameraman, forced him to let you do it!
Masui: What are you saying!? He's the one who called me saying that he wasn't confident in being able to handle a live broadcast, and asked for me to switch with him!!

Shinkai: That's what I heard over the phone from the director... Since Counselor Suzuki was going all out by going out of his way to get the children matching parkas, they wanted to switch to a veteran.
Suzuki: Going out of my way...? I paid to have the outfits for the Detective Squad made because the TV station said that would get everyone more excited!

Suzuki: And the one who called me to introduce me to the manufacturer making the outfits was you, Ms. Reporter!
Shinkai: Eh? Me?
Shinkai: I don't know what you're talking about...

Nakamori: Hey, what's going on!?
Ai: Hey... Was the Detective Squad called here because someone told you something, too?

12

Suzuki: No, that was because of the postscript of his announcement!
Suzuki: It said, "This time, don't act so childish and let's settle this like adults"!

Suzuki: I could tell from that that he didn't like children, so I called for the Boys' Detective Squad!
Ai: I see...

Ai: If the phone calls the TV station got were Kid's doing...
Ai: then he was intentionally getting rid of all the young people from this place...

Ai: If so, why did he write that in the announcement's postscript?
Ai: From the counselor's personality, he should have been able to predict that that would have him call the Detective Squad here and we're even younger...

Ai: This case is just full of mysteries...
Ai: No one should have been able to get out of here...

Ai: and yet the stolen jewel is nowhere to be found.
Ai: And then there's the 4 keys the counselor nailed to the wall...

13

Ai: The ends of the four keys had fluorescent paint on them...
Ai: And since the same fluorescent paint is inside the keyholes on the four pedestals, I can only think that Kid used these keys...
Ai: But even if he managed to get the keys off the wall...
Ai: after he used them, putting them back would have made a pretty loud noise...

Ai: But there was no such sound in the recording from the blackout.
Ai: Could he even get the keys and put them back in the exact same spot in the dark in such a short time?

Ai: But since the four pedestals all have Kid's card on them...
Ai: it seems that Kid did do something to the pedestals in the dark...

Ai: If the fluorescent paint is just a trap...
Ai: then he really did do it without the keys like the writing on the pillar says.

Ai: But without knowing the "flow" of the pillars, I can't figure it out.
Ai: How do you put colors in a specific order?

Ai: Geez...
Ai: Instead of sleeping, could you share your wisdom...?

Conan: White...

14

Ai: Eh?

Ayumi: Conan-kun, are you awake?
Conan: Shh!
Conan: Not so loud...

Mitsuhiko: Eh? You want to keep it a secret that you're awake?
Genta: Why?

Conan: Idiot! This is the first time Kid's knocked me out...
Conan: I can't wake up until I figure out why!

Conan: And I've been wondering...What was that beeping noise?
Mitsuhiko: Oh...
Mitsuhiko: That means the electricity running to the pedestals is cutting off!

Mitsuhiko: It goes off with the sound in the order of: green, red, white, black.
Mitsuhiko: That's why the inspector asked us to guard the pedestals when the alarm went off!
Conan: Ohh...

15

Conan: And could you tell me the locations of the cards Kid put on the pedestals?
Mitsuhiko: The locations...?
Conan: Yeah... I can see that the one on the red pedestal is right above the keyhole...

Conan: And that the one on the green pedestal is a little higher than that...
Conan: but I can't see the black or white ones...

Ayumi: The white one is just above the keyhole like on the red one!
Genta: The black one is higher than the green one!

Conan: I see...
Conan: So that's it...

Conan: Hey, could you surround me so the others can't see me?

Conan: This position isn't very comfortable...
Ai: Oh...So you end up seeing things you don't want to see?

Conan: Ah, no, that's just a coincidence...
Ai: Perv...

Conan: Idiot. If I was really a perv, I would have kept looking without saying anything...

16

Ayumi: C...
Ayumi: Conan-kun!?

Conan: I've figured out why Kid knocked me out...
Mitsuhiko: Eh?
Genta: R-really?

Conan: And of course...
Conan: I've also figured out...

Conan: who among them is actually Kid!

Text in right margin: Who is Kaitou Kid disguised as? Next Chapter: The Resolution!!
