Text: What do those eight beads mean!?
Title: File 740 The Eight Forms of Benevolence and Justice
02
Ran: Hey...
Ran: Kazuha-chan...
Ran: Kazuha-chan!
Kazuha: Hm?
Kazuha: What is it?
Ran: C-could you go with me to the bathroom?
Kazuha: Sure!
Margin: Conan and Heiji seem to have solved the mystery, but...
Mouri: Geez. At your age you should be able to go to the bathroom on your own.
Ran: But we were attacked by the demon dog in the garden.
Kazuha: We're afraid it might show up inside the building this time!
Kazuha: And why are you awake?
Ran: You're worried about the demon dog too, aren't you? Since you actually saw it...
Mouri: W-well, yeah...
03
Mouri: Although it looks like little four-eyes...
Mouri: and the Osaka detective boy are fast asleep.
Kazuha: Well, of course!
Ran: It looked like they had figured out who the murderer is.
Mouri: Th-they know who did it?
SFX: Sit up
Mouri: You're saying they know which of the adopted children is the murderer?
Kazuha: Yeah! But they wouldn't tell us who.
Ran: They seemed to have gotten some kind of clue after hearing about the adopted children's names!
Mouri: Their names?
Kazuha: Miyuki-san told us...
Ran: Her family name used to be Tamaki.
Kazuha: Also she said that, if Takako-san had been male, her name would have been "Kouki" with the kanji for "think" and the kanji for "season".
Ran: And if Yoshiya-san had been female, his name would have been "Yuuka" with the first kanji in "Yuutenji" and the kanji for "flower".
Kazuha: And if Tomoaki-san had been female, his name would have been "Chiharu" with the kanji for "knowing" and "spring".
Ran: That's right! And Shinichi-san who died in Tokyo used to be named "Hitoshi" using the kanji for "benevolence"!
Mouri: I see...
Ran: And the rosary Satomi-san was holding may have had something to do with it.
Mouri: A rosary?
Mouri: I thought she was bedridden.
04
Kazuha: She was holding a rosary that she had actually gotten up out of her futon to get out of the dresser!
Ran: And the string had been cut leaving only 8 beads!
Mouri: Beads...8 of them...?
Kazuha: Was it some kind of fortune-telling?
Ran: I've never heard of any that uses 8 beads.
Mouri: No, it wasn't fortune-telling; it was story-telling
Ran: Story-telling...
Mouri: Eight beads and a demon dog.
Mouri: And if you take the names of the members of the Inubushi family...
Mouri: It has to be the "Nansou Satomi Hakkenden"!!
[TN: This title roughly translates to "The Chronicles of the Eight Dogs of the Satomi Family in Nansou"]
Kazuha: E-
Ran: Eight dogs!?
Kazuha: What's that?
Ran: Is it a story about 8 dogs!?
Mouri: You don't know it?
Mouri: It's a famous novel from the Edo period by the literary master Takizawa Bakin!
05
Mouri: Satomi Yoshizane saw his castle fall to enemy attack before his very eyes and jokingly told his pet dog, Yatsufusa, that, if he brought him the head of the enemy leader, he would give him his daughter, Princess Fuse.
Mouri: Yatsufusa then entered the enemy camp lines and actually brought back the head of the enemy leader.
Mouri: He said that, even if it was a promise to a dog, a ruler mustn't go back on his word, so he let his daughter Princess Fuse go with Yatsufusa into the mountains. And that's just how the story begins.
Kazuha: Wh-what was with that dog?
Ran: Was it cursed?
Mouri: Exactly! In order to become the lord of the castle, Yoshizane had actually defeated a treacherous retainer who had betrayed and killed the previous lord of the castle...
Mouri: but the wife of that treacherous retainer, a woman named Tamazusa, had said when she was beheaded...
Mouri: "If you destroy my body, my soul will become a vengeful spirit and curse the Satomi family for eternity!"
Ran: And that Tamazuki woman's curse was put on that dog?
Mouri: Yeah. But Princess Fuse continuously read Buddhist scriptures to the dog until the curse disappeared.
Kazuha: A-and what happened to the princess and the dog after that?
Mouri: Yoshizane ordered one of his retainers to kill the cursed dog and rescue the princess. But the princess took the bullet for the dog.
Mouri: When that happened, the 8 rosary beads Princess Fuse had scattered into the heavens.
Mouri: Eight warriors from various places with the names of dogs to whom the beads were gifted gathered under Yoshizane and attacked and repelled the vengeful spirit of Tamazusa!
Kazuha: Ohh...
Ran: But what does that have to do with the names?
Mouri: There was a single kanji on each of the 8 rosary beads.
SFX: Beep
SFX: Beep

06
Mouri: Benevolence, Justice, Courtesy, Wisdom, Loyalty, Sincerity, Respect, and Obedience.
Mouri: The kanji for the "Eight Forms of Benevolence and Justice"!
Kazuha: But those kanji aren't in the names of anyone in the Inubushi family!
Ran: Shinichi-san was Hitoshi, but it was changed because it was too simple.
[TN: "Hitoshi" uses the kanji for "Benevolence".]
Mouri: It wasn't just because it was simple! It was because it was the kanji itself!
Mouri: If you put together the left part of the first kanji in "Shinichi" and the two bars on top of the second...
Mouri: You get the kanji for benevolence!
Kazuha: I-it's true...
Ran: I see! Instead of being the kanji itself, the parts of the kanji were put into his name!
Ran: If you take the top radical in the kanji for "think" in Takako-san's name and put the second kanji along with it, you get the kanji for "Respect"!
Ran: And "Kouki", the name for if she had been male, has the same parts in it!
Kazuha: Oh, the left of the first kanji in Yoshiya-san's name along with the last bit of the second kanji gets you the kanji for "Courtesy"!
Kazuha: And for Tomoaki-san you just have to take the top of the 2nd kanji and put it under the first to get "Wisdom"!
Mouri: And for the murdered ones, Keiji-san is "Loyalty", Miwako-san is "Justice", Saki-san is "Sincerity",
Mouri: and President Tsunechika's was "Obedience".
07
Ran: So was Satomi-san called "Princess" because the kanji for "Woman" at the bottom of the first kanji in her name and the second kanji in her name made the kanji for "Princess"?
Kazuha: Oh, yeah! I bet President Tsunechika really loved the Chronicle of the Eight Dogs so he named all of his kids after the beads!
Ran: Oh, but what about Miyuki-san?
Kazuha: Yeah, her name was just spelled with the kanji for "Happiness" before, but...
Mouri: Well, that tells us who the murderer is.
Mouri: With her old family name of "Tamaki" and all but the very top of the kanji for "Happiness"...
Mouri: you get the villain of the Chronicle of the Eight Dogs, "Tamazusa"!
Kazuha: Ehh!?
Ran: You're saying Miyuki-san is the serial killer killing the members of the Inubushi family using the demon dog!?
Mouri: Yes...
Mouri: She's acting as Tamazuki killing the adopted children who are the eight dog-warriors and leaving balls at the scene as proof.
[TN: A "rosary bead" in Japanese is literally a "rosary ball" hence the balls left at the murders.]
Ran: Th-that can't be true!!
Kazuha: Miyuki-san's a good person!
Mouri: You can't say someone isn't a murderer just because they're a good person.
Ran: N-no way...
Kazuha: Heiji, say something!
Kazuha: Miyuki-san isn't the murderer, right!?
08
Kazuha: Huh?
Kazuha: Heiji isn't here...
Ran: Conan's gone, too!
Kazuha: No way!
Mouri: Hey...
Mouri: Did Miyuki-san say what she was doing tonight?
Kazuha: She said she was going to stay up all night looking after Satomi-san.
Ran: To make sure she didn't get out of her futon again.
Mouri: What!?
Mouri: Miyuki-san's gone!?
Tomoaki: I thought looking after mother all night would be difficulty, so I came to switch with her and all I found was this letter.
Mouri: A letter?
Mouri: I am going to make up for...
Mouri: all of my sins in the cabin where I raised the demon dog.
Mouri: Miyuki.
09
Takako: Ah!
Takako: Is that scooter collapsed in front of the cabin Miyuki-san's?
Yoshiya: Woah, now...
Yoshiya: She isn't letting the gas leak out, is she?
Mouri: Well? Does anyone want to go check on your sister?
Tomoaki: I-I'd rather not!
Takako: I'll stay here, too.
Yoshiya: Looks like it's up to you, Mr. Detective!
Kazuha: If Heiji was here, he'd just barge right in.
Ran: Yeah. Conan-kun too. Where are they anyway?
SFX: Appear
Ran & Kazuha: Eh?
10
SFX: Roar
Ran & Kazuha: Kyaaah!
Takako: Th-the demon dog!?
Yoshiya: It's appeared!!
Yoshiya: It's headed for the cabin!!
Mouri: If that gas catches fire, the whole cabin'll...
SFX: Appear
Ran: Eh?
11
Ran: C-
Ran: Conan-kun!?
Kazuha: W-watch out!!
Ran: Get out of there!!
SFX: Roar
Ran: Ah...
12
SFX: Grab
Conan: It's okay!
Conan: Don't be scared.
Ran: Huh? It isn't on fire...
Mouri: It's just glowing red.
Kazuha: And what's that cloth stuck on its body?
Heiji: Fake fire!!
Kazuha: H-Heiji!?
Heiji: They were using it on the set of that quiz show you were watching, remember?
Heiji: They take shiny cloth lit by red LEDs and blow wind on it to make it look like fire!
Heiji: It's the same with that dog!
Conan: He's wrapped in cloth so it'll flap around when he runs. And with red lights under the cloth, he looks like a demon dog!
13
Heiji: And you just have to turn off the lights with a remote to make the dog disappear!
Mouri: Then what are these burning footprints?
Heiji: Look closely! It's just a bunch of cheap lighters made so the gas is always on strung together with piano wire!
Kazuha: So when I tripped, I was smelling the gas from the lighters?
Heiji: Yeah! The gas is naturally odorless, so they make it smell like rotten onions as a safety measure!
Heiji: And you pushed the lighters into the ground when you tripped. That's why the footprints were missing in that spot!
Mouri: But without any fire, the gas wouldn't do anything.
Conan: They were lit by this charcoal briquette in this wire mesh that was attached to the dog's tail!
Conan: That way the lighters would light at as the dog went by.
Conan: And I'm sure the dog wasn't attacking anyone. I bet he was chasing the gas smell the murderer lined up on the ground.
Ran: But after we were attacked in the garden...
Ran: there weren't any lighters on the ground.
Heiji: At the end of piano wire, there was something for the dog to grab onto.
Heiji: That's why you heard a clattering sound and the fires were jumping around after the demon dog disappeared!
[TN: I translated it as a "dry sound" previously. A "clattering sound" is the correct translation.]
Heiji: The lighters must have been bumping around on the rough ground while they were being pulled with the piano wire.
Ran: But when the dog attacked Tomoaki-san, his sleeve caught fire and he was burned.
Heiji: Well, of course he was burned.
14
Heiji: The murderer just set his own sleeve on fire...
Conan: to make it look like the demon dog was really on fire!
Takako: So Tomoaki-san is the murderer?
Yoshiya: B-but you were attacked by the demon dog.
Heiji: Oh, he just got his beloved pet dog to joyously come running over to him!
Heiji: He just put the lighters and piano wire he had in his bag on the ground while we were investigating the cabin...
Heiji: and used a dog whistle to call the dog from the nearby cabin in which he was actually raising the dog!
Heiji: And when he fell out of sight on the bank with the dog, he turned off the dog's lights and set fire to his own sleeve!
Heiji: That's also when he put out an onion to fool us about what Kazuha smelled!
Ran: What about Miyuki-san's letter about making up for her sins?
Heiji: Tomoaki-san wrote it!
Heiji: He was trying to make it look like Miyuki-san was the murderer.
Kazuha: Yeah, but where's Miyuki-san?
Conan: She was asleep in the cabin, so we moved her somewhere else!
Conan: She was looking for something here with Tomoaki-san...
Conan: so I bet you asked her to come look for some medicine you claimed to have dropped when the dog attacked you.
Tomoaki: Y-you saw that!?
15
Heiji: Yup. We followed you from the mansion, so we saw it all. You put Miyuki-san to sleep with some medicine and took her into the cabin.
Heiji: You were trying to make it look like she committed suicide by burning to death along with the demon dog!
Tomoaki: No, I was...
Dog: Whine
Conan: Don't play dumb! A dog doesn't forget his master.
Conan: Hachi always barked at you because he smelled this dog on you, didn't he!?
Heiji: And old lady Satomi saw right through you too!
Tomoaki: Eh?
Heiji: Well, you were always with her to create an alibi for yourself, so it's obvious she could tell when you lied and said you were nursing her.
Heiji: Of the 8 rosary beads she was holding, the 4th from the top was a black "Heaven Bead".
Heiji: Which meant that the person with the kanji for the 4th of "The Eight Forms of Benevolence and Justice", which is "Wisdom", in his name was the murderer!
Heiji: Do you think maybe there was a tear running down her cheek because she was hoping you would find the beads first and turn yourself in?
Heiji: That way you wouldn't commit any more crimes!
Mouri: Eh?
Mouri: He was doing it to get a bigger share of the inheritance!?
Mouri: He said he killed 4 people for THAT?
Yamamura: Yes. He said one share wasn't enough.
Heiji: What did he need so much money for?
16
Yamamura: He said he needed it so he didn't have to give up the castle-like Inubushi mansion.
Yamamura: Apparently the inheritance tax is absurdly expensive.
Yamamura: He said Satomi-san was kinder to him than his real mother and he didn't want to give up the castle in which all of his memories with her lay.
Yamamura: So he killed the 4 who weren't going to help preserve the castle.
Yamamura: He told us this in the questioning room with tears running down his face.
Mouri: But Shinichi-san had abdicated his right to the inheritance, right?
Yamamura: He said he did it to make it look like the murders were due to Tamazusa's grudge and not for the inheritance.
Yamamura: It seems he really did think Miyuki-san was Tamazusa come to destroy this castle.
Yamamura: Satomi-san even collapsed while out gathering wild plants with Miyuki-san.
Ran: N-no way...
Miyuki: I'll protect this castle!
Kazuha: Miyuki-san!
Miyuki: After all, I'm a princess of this castle...
Miyuki: just like mother!
Takako: Well, unlike mother...
Yoshiya: you're quite an unrefined princess.
Miyuki: You don't have to say that!
Conan: No, they're the same.
Conan: If you take the "Bushi" of "Inubushi" and put it with the "Ki" of "Miyuki"...
Conan: they're both Princess Fuse!
[TN: Those two kanji make "Princess Fuse".]
Text: The next two issues will have no chapter so the author can do research.
Box: To be continued in Issue 33
Margin: With two Princess Fuses, the castle is sure to have peace!
