Title: File 746 Ask Holmes
Text: Does this have anything to do with the case...!?
02
Mouri: Hey, Ran?
Mouri: Ran!?
Mouri: Hey!!
Ran: Eh?
Mouri: You're tea's overflowing.
Margin: The morning after she showed her tears to Shinichi...
Ran: Ah!
Mouri: You left last night saying you were getting those two, but you came back to the room alone.
Mouri: Thanks to that, I even had to perform a kesa-gatame for that old woman and her friends.
Ran: Oh, that's right! Did Conan-kun and the professor come back to the hotel?
Mouri: Yeah, but they didn't come back to the restaurant last night.
Mouri: Apparently, that glasses kid caught a cold.
Mouri: They said he's going to spend the day in the hotel.
03
Agasa: He started trembling pretty soon after he finished talking to Ran-kun on the phone.
Agasa: He must have worked up a sweat running around London and the night wind cooled it.
Ran: He did have a bit of a cold before the trip. Maybe it came back.
Mouri: Geez. And we're going back to Japan tomorrow night.
Shinichi: Cough cough
Agasa: W-well...He took some medicine and his fever has gone down, so if he just rests today, he'll be fine!
Shinichi: So don't worry about me.
Shinichi: Cough cough
Shinichi: Sis Ran and Uncle Kogorou need to crack that code!
Shinichi: Cough cough
Shinichi: The seven lines of the code...
Shinichi: probably refer to buildings in various places!
Mouri: How do you know that?
Shinichi: Sh-Shinichi told me...
04
Ran: Sh-
Ran: Shinichi did...?
Ran: Come to think of it, when he was in front of Big Ben...
Ran: Shinichi said that the "rolling bell" referred to Big Ben's chime.
Mouri: When he was in front of Big Ben? Don't tell me that detective kid is here in London.
Mouri: Wait...Did you know about this?
Ran: I-If I did, I wouldn't have made a souvenir list for him!!
Agasa: A-anyway...
Agasa: You two leave Conan-kun to me...
Agasa: and focus on that code.
SFX: Close
Shinichi: Hoo...We managed to fool them.
Agasa: I can't believe you took the antidote you need to get back to Japan.
Shinichi: I had no choice.
Shinichi: If I hadn't, she would have found out that Edogawa Conan is just a young Kudou Shinichi.
05
Agasa: What are you going to do to get back? You don't have another pill!!
Shinichi: And I can't ask Haibara to come bring me one.
Shinichi: Well, I'll stay in here and think of something.
Agasa: Hm? You're not going out?
Agasa: Aren't you going to meet up with the other two and work on the code?
Shinichi: You idiot! I can't just walk around outside when I don't know when I'll turn back into Conan!
Shinichi: And right now...
Shinichi: it's a bit hard to look her in the eye.
Shinichi: Anyway, look at this morning's newspaper!
Shinichi: They've found a suspect from fingerprints they found on the papers with the code on them!
Agasa: Eh!?
Shinichi: His name is Hades Sabara!
Shinichi: He's a serial killer on the run!
Shinichi: I need to do some research on him first.
Agasa: But if they've figured out who it is, won't they catch him before long?
Shinichi: You idiot! Since he left his fingerprints on there...
Shinichi: it means he plans on doing something he's prepared to get caught for!!
06
Mouri: But how are we supposed to solve this thing?
Mouri: I mean, he said the first line's "rolling bell" is Big Ben, and that makes sense...
Mouri: but from the second line on it's a "long nosed wizard in a castle", an "egg", "a pickle", a "cake", and "two swords".
Mouri: How are we supposed to look for them? We don't even know where to start.
Mouri: Unless there was an egg-shaped building like the Tokyo Dome around here.
Ran: Excuse me!
Ran: Is there an egg-shaped building here in London?
Woman: Yes, there's city hall near the tower bridge!
Ran: So there is!!
Mouri: Eh?
Text: City Hall
07
Mouri: I can't believe there's really a building shaped like that...
Ran: Okay, the third line is "My portion is a chilled boiled egg like a corpse."
Ran: It must be referring to city hall here!
Boy: What are these words...a code?
Boy2: Is it a name?
Ran: Eh?
Boy2: This doll's name is Mazarin Stone!
Ran: Mazarin Stone...
Ran: How did you get that doll?
Boy2: I've found ones like it all around here! Like beside the bench and in the shrubbery...
Ran: Can I see it?
Boy2: You can keep it! I've got a lot of them!
Mouri: Hey, why are you taking things from kids?
SFX: Dash
Ran: It might have something to do with the code!
Ran: The man handing out the papers said to ask Holmes if you couldn't figure it out, right?
Ran: So there might be something related to Holmes in the areas the code points to.
Ran: And I heard from Shinichi before that "Mazarin Stone" is the name of a Holmes story.
Ran: Hey!
08
Ran: I went out of my way to make you some lunch and you haven't touched it at all!!
Shinichi: Oh, sorry!
Shinichi: I was doing some research for a case Inspector Megure asked me for help with.
Ran: C'mon! If you keep getting so focused on this stuff that you forget you're hungry, you're going to starve!
Shinichi: But in "The Mazarin Stone" Holmes said...
Shinichi: "The faculties become refined when you starve them."
[TN: This is the same line Ran recalled Shinichi saying last chapter, I just wasn't able to find the original quote without knowing what story it was from so I just translated the Japanese then.]
Ran: Again with Holmes?
SFX: Put down
Shinichi: "I am a brain, Watson.
Shinichi: The rest of me is mere appendix!"
Ran: If everything but the head is extra...
Ran: the head is all that matters.
SFX: Pop
Mouri: H-hey, what are you doing!?
Ran: Huh?
Ran: There's something written here!
09
Ran: T...
Ran: I see! There's a letter hidden at each place from the code and you get a word if you put them all together.
Mouri: But...
Mouri: After the "egg" is "I finish with a whole pickle."
Mouri: There's no way you're going to find a building with such a thin, cylindrical shape.
Mouri: No, wait...That huge Ferris wheel, London Eye, looks kind of like a pickle.
Ran: But the code says it's a whole pickle.
Ran: That would be one before it's been sliced.
Mouri: Don't be stupid!
Mouri: A pickle is a young, pickled cucumber!
Mouri: You're not going to find such a long, narrow, and round building even if you searched the entire...
Mouri: planet...
10
Ran: Ahh! It has to mean that!
Mouri: You're kidding!
Mouri: I-it really exists...
SFX: Dash
Ran: Anyway, let's go!
Mouri: Th-
Mouri: There's something wrong with London.
Shinichi: This Hades Sabara guy...
Shinichi: is bad news.
Shinichi: He started off as a hard-working company employee...
Shinichi: but his mother came down with a serious disease and he borrowed a lot of money from friends to pay for her operation.
Shinichi: He put the money in stocks and bookmaking, but he lost it all.
Shinichi: Thanks to that, his mother couldn't get her operation and passed away July of last year.
Shinichi: Hades had a huge amount of debt and his only relative was now dead. He completely changed as a person and started committing crimes.
11
Shinichi: His friends were demanding that he repay his debts...
Shinichi: so he invited them all to his house, slaughtered them all, and ran off.
Shinichi: A week after that, he suddenly appeared at the house of the friend who advised him on what stocks to invest in...
Shinichi: and killed him along with his family.
Shinichi: Apparently, he dug out all of their hearts.
Agasa: Wh-why their hearts!?
Shinichi: Probably because his mother died of a heart disease.
Shinichi: And on top of all that, he went around blowing up all the hospitals that refused to perform his mother's surgery. It caused quite a few casualties.
Agasa: B-blew them up?
Agasa: He used bombs!?
Shinichi: Yeah. While he was on the run, Hades met a female bomb expert named Hestia who used to be in the army.
Shinichi: She helped Hades carry out his revenge!
Shinichi: It says that women blew herself up the other day when the police found where she was hiding, but the body was blown to bits.
Agasa: So it could have been someone else's body and she's still alive?
Agasa: But how have they not caught someone like that?
Shinichi: Apparently, he keeps getting plastic surgery while on the run.
Shinichi: Someone like him is likely to do any number of horrible things.
Shinichi: There's a bookmaker where he bet on quite a few things and he might have a grudge on the country of England itself.
SFX: Vvv
SFX: Vvv
12
Shinichi: Wah...
Shinichi: It's Ran.
SFX: Vvv
SFX: Vvv
SFX: Vvv
SFX: Vvv
Shinichi: S-sorry, but could you answer it?
Agasa: Huh!? It would be weird for me to answer with that phone!
Agasa: Just answer it already!!
Agasa: They might have figured something out about the code!!
Shinichi: Th-that's right.
SFX: Beep
Shinichi: H-hello...
Mouri: Geez...
Mouri: If you're there, just answer it right away, you moron!!
Shinichi: Huh? Isn't this Ran's cell?
Mouri: Ran kept fidgeting around and not calling, so I made the call myself!
Mouri: She said you would know better than anyone when it came to Sherlock Holmes!
Shinichi: Holmes?
13
Mouri: Yeah! The "egg" in the third line was the egg-shaped city hall!
Mouri: And the "pickle" in the fourth line is some cucumber shaped building called "The Gherkin".
Mouri: The problem is that there are things related to Holmes scattered around them.
Shinichi: Like what!?
Mouri: Near city hall were dolls that said something about a stone on their chests.
Ran: It was "The Mazarin Stone"!
Ran: You had said there was a scene in it where Holmes said that everything but the brain is mere appendix...
Ran: so I took off the doll's head and there was a letter "T"!
Shinichi: I see. So it's based on lines of Holmes' from the titles you find...
Shinichi: and that shows you a keyword with which to solve the case?
Ran: Right!
Ran: Next to that Gherkin building were a bunch of scratched-up pens.
Ran: The side of the pen says "Dancing Men." Is that the title of a Holmes story?
Shinichi: Yeah, "The Adventure of the Dancing Men".
Ran: I thought there might be something hidden on this one too, so I took the caps off of the top and bottom, but didn't find anything.
Shinichi: A scratched-up pen with caps on the top and bottom...
Shinichi: Okay, take the two caps off and put them together!
Shinichi: The scratches will probably match up somewhere.
14
Ran: They do!
Ran: It says "N"!
Ran: But how did you know?
Shinichi: In that story, Holmes said "If one simply knocks out all the central inferences and presents one's audience with the starting-point and the conclusion...
Shinichi: one may produce a startling, though possibly a meretricious, effect."
Ran: I see! So you took the pen in the middle out...
Ran: and put the top and bottom caps together!
Shinichi: So was there something near Big Ben from the first line?
Ran: I thought there might be so that's where we are now...
Ran: but we haven't found anything with the title of a Holmes story on it.
Ran: Dad found a strange arrow on the pathway in front of the gate to Big Ben though.
Shinichi: An arrow?
Ran: Yeah. You know how there's a bridge right next to Big Ben?
Ran: It points to that.
15
Shinichi: There's a drain with its cover taken off partway across the bridge. Go find it!
Ran: O-okay...
Shinichi: There should be something written next to the drain.
Shinichi: The title is...
Shinichi: "The Valley of Fear"...
Shinichi: It's the final Holmes novel!
Ran: Here it is!
Ran: I found it, Shinichi!
Ran: Where is the keyword hidden here?
Ran: Sh-Shinichi?
Shinichi: "The Valley of Fear"... That one's an entire novel...
Shinichi: Was there a bridge in it anywhere?
Shinichi: No, it doesn't have to be a bridge.
Shinichi: Drain...River...Water...
Shinichi: Water!?
Shinichi: When water is near and a weight is missing it is not a very far-fetched supposition that something has been sunk in the water.
Ran: Eh?
Shinichi: That's Holmes' line from the novel that is most likely being referenced here.
Shinichi: That means...
Shinichi: there should be something sunk in the Thames there.
16
Ran: There's a string tied to...
Ran: the street light on the guardrail and it leads into the river!
Mouri: Okay.
Mouri: I'll reel it in.
Mouri: Hm?
Mouri: "A"!
Mouri: It has "A" carved into it!!
Shinichi: The letters we've found are "T", "N", and "A".
Ran: Hey, Shinichi! Next up should be a building shaped like a cake. Where should we go?
Shinichi: I'm not going to make any progress doing this over the phone!
Shinichi: Wait a second! I'm on my way there!
Ran: Eh?
Box: To be continued in Issue 41
Margin: Those two are acting oddly awkward. Can they mend their relationship!?
