Climbing Glossary
There are technical terms that appear in "Kokou no Hito". Here, the terms appearing in volume 4 are explained!!
Kick Step (P49) ................................................*1
斜面
On sloping hard snow or ice, a climbing technique without crampons. Climbing on an ice surface kicking in with the toe-tips of the climbing shows.
Porter (Bokka) (P 52) ................................................*2
Someone who carries heavy luggage on their back and climb mountains. And like in the 42nd climb, people who are porters as a living (porters) are said to be incredibly strong.
TL Note: There's no exact translation here. In Japanese it's a verb, I used an equivalent English noun.
Mt. Mizugaki (P 84) ................................................*3

In the Yamanishi Prefecture, Hokutou City, a mountain with an elevation of 2230m. Next to what is called the "Yosemite of Japan" Mt. Ogawa, a granite rocky area with the same kind of crack developed in it as Mt. Ogawa. It's larger than Mt. Ogawa in scale, and is a popular spot for free climbing.

A path beaten by people walking it. Or to go over those footprints again.
Yosemite (P99) ................................................*4
A national park in the state of California in America. Inside that park is Yosemite Valley, a granite valley spanning a length of 10 km across with an elevation range of 500~1000m. And the pronominal "big wall" El Capitan and others are there. A holy land in the world of rock climbing.
Eight-thousander (P112)
The general term for one of the fourteen mountains that surpasses an 8000 meter elevation on the earth's surface. They are all located on the Himalayan Mountain Range. The first to climb an 8000 meter peak was a French team, who climbed Annapurna (1950). The first climb to the summit of the highest peak, Everest, was an English team in 1953. The first person to climb all 14 peaks is Reinhold Messner, which he finished on October 16th 1986. Currently, all variation routes have been climbed, but "K2's East Face" alone has still never been climbed by anyone. Also, Kangchenjunga on page 23 is an Eight-thousander.
TL Note: The standard English phrase is "Eight-thousander". In the context of that chapter I just wrote the literal translation "8000 meter peak". Remember all this, it will be on the test.

Mid-way on the approach to K2, the name of the confluence where the Baltoro Glacier flows into the Godwin-Austen Glacier at elevation 4600m. It's named another confluence in the Swiss Alps' Aletsch Glacier.

A Glacier in Karakoram in the Himalayas. The Baltoro Glacier, with a full-length of 69km and a greatest width of 3km, is also called a great glacier. As it says in this book, aiming for K2, going from the innermost area you can go to by car, the town of Askole, you treck over the rubble-covered Baltoro Glacier.
Base Camp (P124) ................................................*7
Established at the foot of a high mountain when going overseas to climb to high places. A camp area where you live for several weeks to several months from where you start mountain climbing.
Crevice (P144)
A crack in a glacier or snowy valley. A crevice covered by fallen snow is called a "hidden crevice". Cases where mountain climbers tread on these and get into accidents happen frequently.
Mountain Entrance Fee (P144)
In places including Pakistan and Nepal and China, to climb high mountains there is a mountain entrance fee (Also called a climbing fee, or royalty) that has to be paid. The amount of money varies for the number of people and the the desired elevation. Fluctuations also accompany the season. The fee for climbing mountains around K2's Pakistan is 12,000 dollars. Also, in 2008 due to the decrease in number of climbers due to terrorism, a measure of halving the mountain entrance fee has been taken.

Laborers that transport trekker's luggage, and expedition team's equipment to the base camp. They have climbing skills, and there are also high-altitude porters who carry things to high places. Recently, they are also called "climbing guides". Also, Sherpas, the name of a race of people, worked as porters during the pioneering days of the Himalayans.
TL Note: This is the less literal representation of a "porter". As opposed to the Japanese phrase which I've already said doesn't have an exact equivalent. It doesn't include the definition of "someone paid to carry" in general, which is what I meant by the original. This only refers to mountains. Also it's the English word "porter" put into katakana.
Government Communication Agency (P144) ................................................*9
現在政府から登山監視のために派遣される官吏。
In the high mountains of the Himalayas, a government official sent by the current government in order to observe the mountain climbing. Also called a liaison officer, or abbreviated as "liaison". Climbs to the base camp with the climbing team. They remain at the base camp until climbing activities have ended.
