Why do I climb? The answer should be obvious...
This chapter, my friends, marks the end of the VOMICs. And we're back to part 1. Which they thought to stick this monologue in it.
http://vomic.shueisha.co.jp/kokou/
And also I've finished Volume 5. One more cliff surmounted. I can say I've made progress, but the top is still far away.

Title: 52nd Climb Those Who Climb
[Now I'm really sure I've seen THIS picture before... dunno where though...]
Page 189:
Mori: Why do you climb mountains?
Page 190-191:
Mori: "Because the mountain is there---..."
"Hmph. That sounds like a line I've heard before."
"But the world below is full of annoying things, it's such a pain. On mountains, you can be free."
"Free? Even on mountains there are annoying human connections. When you come to a mountain, all the problems you carry don't just go away, right? Despite that, why do you climb mountains?"
"...I like them, mountains. Those cold rocks, the clear air, the pure white snow beds that no one's ever stepped on, the ridge lines that feel just like you're walking in the sky---"
"So it gives you pleasure? But is it worth risking your life for?
Today, you may be climbing in high sprits, but tomorrow you may lose your footing and fall to your death. That's the world of mountains.
Even so, you climb mountains?"
Page 192:
Mori: "Yes."
"I climb them."
[Little note to scanlators, it's the same picture just mirrored. You can copy and flip it horizontally to avoid redrawing.]

Kase: It finally cleared up.
I can see Mount Shirouma really well.
Ever since we entered the from Oyashirazu on the Sea of Japan, it's been a constant snowstorm these seven days.
Kunieda: This is the false good weather, characteristic of the Sea of Japan.
It was created by low pressure systems. It's really just an air pocket.
Kase: Heh. I know that much.
This weather won't last two hours.
Komatsu: Well, then we ain't got time for pointless babble.
SFX: Sakuh
This ridge traversal ain't just training. For the K2 Attack Team it's doubling as our debut for our sponsors...
So if you make a blunder, there'll be things you could've gotten that you won't get!
Page 201:
Komatsu: C'mon, let's get a picture.
And make sure not to hide the precious sponsors' names!!

Komatsu: Mori!! From here you take the top of the path for our switchback climb.
We're late for getting to our meet up point with Captain Ninomiya.

Komatsu: Mori Buntarou... He's a pretty interestin' guy.
With this he's got plenty of hope even for K2!

Climbing Glossary
There are technical terms that appear in "Kokou no Hito". Here, the terms appearing in volume 5 are explained!!
無酸素登山
Climbing Without Oxygen
The concept of mountain climbing without oxygen in compressed cylinders. As humans defy limits, it is valued as something in style. In high places, air pressure decreases. The oxygen content at elevation 5000m is half that of ground level. At elevation 8000m it becomes one third. Therefore because of the many different obstacles on the human boy bottled oxygen has been used in the Himalayas. In recent years, climbers adapt their bodies to low oxygen environments beforehand allowing themselves to go onto mountains without the cylinders of compressed oxygen.
Altitude Sickness (P 24)
The general term for an impediment due to the lower pressure and oxygen when climbing to high places. Also known as "Mountain Intoxication". Headaches, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and such occur, and it can become a serious illness, such as causing pulmonary edema or cerebral edema. Regardless of age or physical strength, it's a disease that outbreaks when you first go over 3000 meters in altitude. By adapting to high altitudes beforehand through low oxygen rooms and such to cope with the conditions is suggested.
Normal Pressure Low Oxygen Room (P 24)...............................1
A room where the oxygen is artificially lowered. The air pressure is the same as at ground level. For long-time training that includes sleep, also artificial walls are put in place and imitation super-high climbing training is also done.
VO2 max (Maximum amount of oxygen absorption) (P 28) [Once again, the 2 is a subscript. And the places in the paragraph, too.]
Inside their bodies, humans burn nutrients (fat and carbohydrates) with oxygen to produce energy. The amount of oxygen taken into the body in one minute is the oxygen absorption amount, (VO2). Because severe exercise requires a lot of energy, the energy absorption can become bigger, but the upper limit of that is called the VO2 max. It's proportionally related to the rate of oxygen absorption and energy production. In endurance sports like marathons the more a person excels in VO2 max the better results they can produce.
Oxymeter (P 51)...............................2
A tool to measure the oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the blood. In the lower world with lots of oxygen, it will display a number near 100(%). At an elevation of 6000m the oxygen concentration will be at approximately 75(%), at 85000m approximately 30(%). As the altitude goes up the value will go down. Insufficient oxygen inside the body indicates the decrease of body's ability to function. Also, with the method of efficient deep breaths, the oxygen concentration can be brought up.
Mount Yari (Yariga-take) (P 61)...............................3
A mountain in the Northern Alps, Hida Mountains, on the boarder of the Nagano Prefecture's Matsumoto City and Oomachi City and the Gifu Prefecture's Takayama City. At an elevation of 5000m, Japan's 5th highest mountain. Due to the conically sharpenedd shape of its peak, it's called the tip of a spear. Because of the Kitakama Ridge of Mount Yari deep relation to mountaineering novels "Kokou no Hito" and "Fuusetsu no Bivouac" (Snowstorm Bivouac) as their settings, it's one of the most well known routes.
TL Note: "Yari" means spear. And here he's refferring to the novel by Jirou Nitta.
Bouldering (P 75)...............................4
A kind of free climbing. The sport of climbing big rocks or stones without any rope for safety insurance. Because there is no safety insurance, rocks can be informally and purely climbed so it's been established as a climbing genre done at the foot of mountains. Also, the bouldering grade (difficulty level) is a method of denoting difficulty level. And in the system popularly used within the country, level 5 is close to Free Climbing's 5.15.
Heavy Snow Field (P 78)
A snow field is a, on mountains or polar regions, a place where fallen snow remains in the summer later than the area around it. On the ridge of K2 there are heavy snow fields stretching over the mountain part-way up it, and are frequently the cause of avalanches.
Face (P 85)...............................5
In climbing, a classification given to a rock's shape. A face is a vertical wall with thoroughly no cracks.
Head Wall (P 86)
A rock or ice wall at the summit area of a huge peak.
Camp Ground (P 93)...............................6
The place where the tents are pitched.
Page 212:
Final Camp (P 96)
Being used for several weeks in Himalayan mountain climbing, an advance base (camp) established generally for use in mountain climbing when aiming for the peak. Their construction order is denoted with C1, C2 and C3 but the last camp for the summit attack is called the final camp or the attack camp (AC).
Ridge Line (P 128)...............................7
A line connecting one peak to another.
Deposit (P 131)
To store or safeguard cargo. For the winter, transporting food supplies, fuel and such to the mountain hut or some such thing for storage.
TL Note: I just translated this as "stash". Because they were talking about hiding money, it would've read awkwardly to write it literally as "deposit".
Ridge Traversal (P145)
A Ridge Traversal is a long continuing walk and climb along a ridge line from mount ain to mountain. Going from to every peak from the end of a mountain range to the other is called an all-mountain ridge traversal.
Switchback Climb (P 201)...............................8
In situations where the steepness of a mountain makes climbing it difficult, a way of tackling the slope by progressing diagonally.

[OOh boy. It's what everybody's been waiting for, sorta. Volume 6. Will everyone die in this one? Will they make it to K2? Will characters develop? I forget really, I read them all in a row so I forget what happens where. Probably the characters develop at least...]
