I'm gonna get sick from all the Bakuman I'm doing...

Shuujin: Why won't "PCP" become an anime!?
Hattori: Actually, it would be better to say that you shouldn't assume it'll get one...
Side: A shocking admission!!
Title: "Bakuman"
Original Story / Ooba Tsugumi
Manga / Obata Takeshi
Shuujin: Like I asked, why!?
It's getting a drama CD and a novelization, why not an anime!?
Title: Page 101
Complaints and a Desire to Improve
Hattori: Drama CDs and novelizations are easy for Shueisha to put out, but animes are different.
膨大な手間と人手お金がかかるスポンサーがつかなければできない
The huge amount of time and manpower costs money. Without sponsors attached to it, it can't be done.
And it's difficult for "PCP" to gain sponsors.
Shuujin: Why is that!!? It's popular with everyone from adults to children, and I've even seen children imitating it tons of times!
Hattori: That's exactly why!!
Saikou: !?
Page 2:
Hattori: "PCP" is getting complaint phone calls... And they're not shown to you two, but there are lots of protest letters addressed to the author.
Every manga gets them to a certain degree, but....... "PCP" is getting quite a few more.
They say things such as:
"I'm worried about children imitating this" and "Is 'Jump' encouraging children to commit crimes and pranks?" [Phrases in quotes are big/bold]
Ashirogi: !
..........
Hattori: Of course, we know it's not that kind of manga.
But even if we explain, though some people will understand that, not all will.
And we also understand the concerns of parents whose children are raving about "perfect crimes" and their uneasiness about their children imitating them.
Shuujin: I-I understand that, but...... if that's the case, then wouldn't we not even be able to draw the manga anymore?
Hattori: Of course, you two aren't doing anything wrong. How far you're allowed to go is up to the judgement of the editorial department.
And I think for "PCP", it being enough for people to want to imitate it is a good thing.
Saikou: It's different from the techniques in battle manga. The fact that it can really happen makes it interesting...... Otherwise, it wouldn't be able to compete with battle manga.
Page 3:
Hattori: Exactly. It's strangely realistic, so it's not impossible.
That may be this manga's biggest selling point, but...
also its biggest weakness for being considered to be made into an anime!
Shuujin: I've been careful not to put in anything too bad, though...
Then, how about we do more perfect crimes that can't be imitated...?
Or make it so they absolutely only do good things?
Saikou: We can't do that!
Shuujin: Saikou............
Saikou: It'll definitely make it less interesting. We can't destroy "PCP"'s current structure which made it popular.
Shuujin: But...
Hattori: Mashiro-kun is exactly right. I'm against changing the current structure, as well.
Understand...? In a way, "PCP" is Ashirogi Muto in perfect form......
A popular cult style manga! It's exactly the manga I was aiming for.
Page 4:
Hattori: You haven't got anything wrong, Takagi-kun.
I really think you've been bringing out the best Ashirogi Muto can do in the original stories you're writing.
Shuujin: ..........
I think so, too.
.........But it can't become an anime..............
Hattori: Why are you so fixated over it becoming an anime......?
It's fine as long as it's popular, isn't it? Actually, the fact that it doesn't have an anime and is so high ranked is something to be proud of, isn't it?
Do you think that if you're running in "Jump" and you don't have an anime that you're not succeeding?
An anime is a something that follows results, it's not something to be aimed for from the beginning.
Shuujin: That's true, but we..........
Saikou: Shuujin, it's okay.
Shuujin: It's not okay! Hattori-san, I'll say it flat out.
Hattori: ? What is it?
Shuujin: An anime is.......
Ever sine when I paired with Mashiro in middle school... getting our work get made into an anime...
Page 5:
has been our dream!
We want our work to be made into an anime no matter what!!
Saikou: Shuujin...
Shuujin: That's something we've always considered..............
Saikou: ..........
Hattori: This may sound harsh, but...... Takagi-kun, you're the type who writes things that are well thought out.
Shuujin: !? Yes......
Hattori: And like I just said, as Ashirogi Muto's manga, "PCP" falls into that area.
But, if you say you want it to be made into an anime no matter what, then......
Page 6:
Hattori: You would even have to have written it with becoming an anime in mind.
Shuujin: !
Hattori: The subject matter of "PCP" isn't suited for an anime.
Shuujin: Write it with becoming an anime in mind...
It's true that I didn't think that far when I was making it...... I didn't have that luxury. Whether or not we could remain in "Jump" depended on being able to compete with Niizuma Eiji's works. Just because of that.........
Hattori: It's exactly because of that, that you were able to make something good. From the perspective of "PCP" also becoming an anime, it can't.
It's not a manga that was made with becoming an anime in mind. Do you think you can make a good series that also takes that into account?
Shuujin: .........
If you put it that way, then I'll write our next work with the aim becoming an anime.
Saikou: ! Shuujin.
SFX: BAH
Page 7:
Hattori: ............Having a desire to improve is a good thing, but why go so far...
Shuujin: Well..........
Saikou: !
Shuujin, I said it's okay!
"PCP" is a popular manga.
Let's do our best with this for now, and just really aim for an anime version when we get to our next work.
Shuujin: Saikou.............
Saikou: We're still only 20 years old.
Shuujin: ......Well, that's true...
Hattori: ...............And like I said to begin with, it's not 100% certain or anything. If you work hard, you could possibly get a late-night time slot like "Rakko 11 Gou".
Shuujin: Late-night is fine!
Saikou: .........I think what Hattori-san's trying to say is we should just be happy having "PCP".
Shuujin: Ah, I see.
Hattori: Right.
Shuujin: .............I understand.
Page 8:
Yoshida: Unfortunately...... The Rakko anime is ending this Fall.
Hirmaru: Eh!?
Is-Is there nothing we can do!? The Rakko goods are selling, aren't they!? And the ratings are good, aren't they!?
Yoshida: Well, there was a long two season plan that went for a whole year. I'd say it's done pretty well, wouldn't you? And if you work hard on the series, there could be a "Rakko 11-Gou 2".
(In Bubble): Maybe...?

100 million... 120 million! ...When did you...... The volumes aren't even selling that well.
Yoshida: Uhuhu... And I've already paid all my taxes for the year.........
?
Yeah... A billion... If you had a billion and lived frugally, you might be able to manage, somehow.
Hiramaru: A billion!? You've gotta be kidding!
Yoshida: Of course, the value of money changes over time. For the level you live at, Hiramaru-kun, to live safely while just having fun, would be 2 billion.
Hiramaru: 2 billion...... That'll be impossible unless I keep drawing for the rest of my life...
Yoshida: Exactly. So, get drawing until you've saved up 2 billion.
Hiramaru: Yoshida-shi, you've been saying some utterly ridiculous stuff, recently. If you don't work harder to persuade me, you're not gonna lure me into feeling like drawing. You need to manipulate me properly.

Shuujin: So there's no way "PCP"'ll be an anime? What a shock~~~~
Saikou: I could tell you were thinking in the interest of Azuki and I, and I'm really thankful for that, but...
honestly, "it won't become an anime" was a shock...
Shuujin: I know, right...? It's all because I didn't give becoming an anime enough thought...
Sorry...
Saikou: Wh...
What're you apologizing for? Like we said, "PCP" is a popular manga thanks to you, Shuujin.
SFX: KACHA
Shuujin: I wonder how many years "PCP"'ll continue, huh~~~~~~~?
Saikou: I guess we'll have to think about that sorta thing now, too............
Shuujin: But if it's really popular and goes for 10 years without becoming an anime, we'll be 30.
Azuki, too.
Saikou: .........Azuki said she wanted to get married by 40.
Shuujin: You're half kidding about that, right............?
......Hey, Saikou...
Saikou: Hm?
SFX: KACHA
Shuujin: Why don't you try texting her... asking straight out when her ideal time to get married would be?
Saikou: EEH~~~
Shuujin: It's important. Whether the ideal age is 22 or 30 makes a big difference.
Saikou: I told you, you don't need to think that far into it. Just work on making good, original stories.

I haven't got anything to be worried over......
"PCP"'s doing great, and we still haven't won against Eiji with "CROW".
SFX: GIH
Saikou: Eiji......
SFX: GIRI
Page 11:
Saikou: ......That's right... Eiji's drawing two series, "CROW" and "NATURAL".
And "CROW", he's even doing alone.
If the two of us, Shuujin and I... split the work between original story and drawings.
We'd be at a better advantage to draw two series than Eiji.
One more series!
Like Shuujin said, one calculated even for becoming an anime......
And both him and I have managed to get a little free time.............
No, I shouldn't say something like that to Shuujin.
We should focus our attention on "PCP".........
I'm the one who said we were still only 20", wasn't I.............?
............I'll see how things go for a little longer. But even so, if we have free time...
Page 12:
SFX: PINPOON (doorbell chime)
Saikou: Huh? We've still got two full hours before work starts.
Shiratori: Ah, I promised to meet with Takagi-sensei and have him take a look at my adjusted name.
Saikou: Ah, is that right?
Shuujin: Yeah, yeah.
Shiratori: Sorry, I know you're busy with being serialized, and all.
Shuujin: Not at all. The research has been good for stimulating me to come up with ideas, too.
This is an important scene, so you'll want to use the whole right page for it.
Shiratori: Ah, I see.
Saikou: Like I thought, Shuujin has a decent amount of free time... In that case, before long...
Shuujin: That's about all the advice I can give you.
There's still an hour until work starts, so can you at least adjust the things I just mentioned?
Shiratori: Okay. Thank you very much.
Saikou: Hattori-san should be here at 11 today, so maybe you could show it to him.
Shiratori: Eh? I don't want to get in your way, like that.
Saikou: We're fine with going afterwards. And I'm sure Hattori-san won't say no.
Right?
Shuujin: Yeah.
Page 13:
Orihara: Sensei, it looks like we'll have it up by 8:30! We're getting faster and faster.
Saikou: !
8:30... He's not coming to pick up the manuscript until 11.
Phone: *Pi*
*Pi*
Hattori: Oh, Mashiro-kun, what's going on?
Saikou: Could you drop by at 9 instead?
Hattori: Looks like you're getting the manuscripts done faster, huh? Do you want to get the meeting done earlier, too?
Saikou: Yes, that too, but hold on a second please.
Shiratori-kun, it'd be better if you said you wanted him to take a look at your name yourself.
Shiratori: Eh... Okay.
Moriya: !... A name to the editor?
Shiratori: Th... This is Shiratori, um...
Page 14:
Shiratori: Before your meeting with the senseis, do you think you could look at my name?
Hattori: Oh, so that's what this is about! Okay then, I'll come over at 9.
Moriya: Shiratori-kun, could I have the phone, too?
Shiratori: Eh,
okay.
I'm handing the phone over to Moriya-san.
Hattori: ?
Moriya: I finished a name, too, so could you look at mine then, too?
Hattori: What!? Seems like everyone's really ambitious. Sounds good!
Moriya: So you'll look at it, then? Thank you very much.
SFX: PIH
SFX: CHIRA (glance)
Orihara: Aw, man.
I've gotta write a name, too..........
Page 15:
Hattori: All right, let's get started right away.
I'll start by looking at the one by the older, more experienced author, Moriya-kun.
Moriya: !
Please.
SFX: PARA...
Hattori: Speaking about it as a whole, it's just too complicated, it's just not suited for "Jump".
Moriya: !
Hattori: First and foremost, though I understand that the city is alive and growing, it's hard for me to believe that it's the humans that are helping it grow, even with the reasons given.
Moriya: ..........
No......... You see, with this work I'd like to have the readers think about the connection between human life and cities... and on a larger scale, the earth.
Hattori: Readers don't want to be preached to, like that.
Sorry, but I don't think this is the kind of work that can be fixed. You should go with another story.
Moriya: !
..........
Hattori: Okay, next is Shiratori-kun's.
Shiratori: Like I thought, he's really strict...
Please...........
Page 16:
Hattori: Interesting!
Shiratori: !
.........
SFX: YORO... (tottering)
Moriya: Well, I think I'll be taking my leave...
Orihara: Ah, I don't have a name written, so me, too..........
Saikou: Ah, good job today.
Orihara: Same to you.
SFX: FURA...
Orihara: Don't get discouraged, Moriya-san. This always happens in the beginning.
Moriya: I'm not discouraged... Art is something that's rarely understood in any age.
SFX: GACHA... Fura... Fura...
Hattori: This sentiment and friendship between the human and dog is really well written.
There've been manga where animals can talk, but that you can do this without them talking to each other directly is amazing...
The story's organization is good, I'm surprised.
Maybe this could go for the Treasure award... No, it's a safe bet for "NEXT!".
Shiratori: Wah.
Page 17:
Shuujin: You did it!
Saikou: Congratulations! Well, it might be a little early for that, huh.........
Shiratori: Ha... Hattori-san.
I don't think I'm going to submit this name, after all.
Hattori: !?
Why not? You did a good job.
The drawings are good, too.
And if you're popular in "NEXT!", then you could even get serialized.
Shuujin: He's right. This is your chance, ain't it?
Saikou: Yeah, I thought your drawings were good, too, Shiratori-kun.
Shiratori: But...
I'm not the one who made this name...
Shuujin: !
Hattori: What do you mean?
Shiratori: Before you, Hattori-san, I had Takagi-sensei look at it and adjust it three different times.
It wasn't done on my own skill.............
Hattori: Three times...... Is that true, Takagi-kun?
Shuujin: ...Yes. He wanted me to look at it, so.............
Page 18:
Hattori: So that's it...?
I did think this was too good for someone's first time writing a name...
SFX: Para...
Shiratori: He-He's right... If the story went smoothly and got all the way to being serialized......... I wouldn't know what to do with it.
Hattori: ..........
Shiratori-kun, if possible... do you have the first draft of this name before you adjusted it...?
Shiratori: Yes, I have it with me. And the other two adjusted drafts.
Hattori: Let me see.
.........
Takagi-kun's almost too skilled.
I'd like to show this work to the higher-ups,
but if it were to run, how about...
Original Concept and Drawings: Shiratori Shun,
Original Story Ashirogi... No, Takagi Akito? [Everything but "no" is big/bold.]
That's the only way we can do it.
Shuujin: !
Page 19:
Saikou: .........
Hattori: And if this got to serialization, it would be good if Takagi-kun made the story.
Saikou: !
H-Here, if Shuujin did the original story for another work...
Hattori: Takagi-kun usually has some free time alongside "PCP". [The PCP face is after the title. This kinda is done a lot so I'm not writing it every time.]
I don't mean right away, but could you think about doing the original story for this, too?
Shuujin: Eh......?
But I can't do it unless Mashiro feels the same way.
Hattori: Ah, sorry, you're right...
Shiratori: ......
Saikou: ..........
As...
As long as it doesn't affect "PCP"....
I want Shiratori-kun to be serialized, too.......... and I want Takagi to get better as an original author, so...
Insert: Excitement!! Unable to hide it...
Bottom: Bakuman。
