[Bakuman 6 Translation by Kewl0210]
Page 165:
Page: Semi Finalist Prize Winner! [Top, white]
Prize: 1,000,000 Yen [Starburst]
Semi Grand Prize Winner [Also the starburst]
Large bander [This is already English]
Niizuma Eiji (15) Aomori [Under the title]
Tezuka Award [Large Black on Right]
Selection Results [Small, white, Right]
Results!!! [Large, black on right.]
Saikou: He got a semi-finalist award at 15, that's amazing.
It says he got high praise from all the judges.
Title: Page 6 Good and Bad
Saikou: Niizuma Eiji... This guy kinda pisses me off.
Shuujin: Hm?
Saikou: Look at the acceptance speech.
Paper: Hoyous Words of the Winner
This is the result of persevering and working hard while everyone else was playing games. I'm gonna keep doing my best and I hope to play an active role in the pages of a magazine.
[Bottom stuff's unreadable or not important.]

Page 166:
Saikou: I was plating games a week ago, so it feels like he's insinuating me.
Shuujin: ..........
I'm telling you, we can surpass someone like this.
If you look closely, what he's getting praised for is just his artwork.
Saikou: You sure have confidence, Shuujin.
Shuujin: "Confidence", "effort" and "luck", right?
Saikou: It was "hubris" "effort" and "luck".
Shuujin: "Confidence" sounds nicer, and it means the same thing.
This week's Kochikame is funny.

Page 167:
Shuujin: There are a decent amount of people aiming to become mangakas like us.
Like in class 1.
Shuujin: That guy Ishizawa?
There's no way in hell he'll become one. I was in the same class as him in second year.
He only "drew manga" to get attention of people around him.
People: That's so cute.
Draw me, next.
Shuujin: He wasn't drawing manga, only head-shots of creepy girls. I didn't think a single iota that I'd team up with him.
Saikou: I was in the same class as him in first year, and I got the same feeling.
He could only draw one type of drawing, yet he judged them all like he was some great pro.
If you looked down on him or make fun of him, it wouldn't do him any good.
Shuujin: Yeah. So our real rival is Eiji.

Page 168:
Saikou: Eiji is probably already having talks with the editors about how "as soon as he graduates high school he'll get serialized".
Shuujin: Eh!? You think he's already talking with editors?
Saikou: I'm 100% sure. If they get a prize, it's automatic. And even if they don't win a prize, you could get an editor if there's one interested in you.
In my 6th year of elementary school, I heard from my uncle, and I'm sure it's the same now.
Sign: Winning a prize
Face: Editor
Sign: Rejection
Face: Editor
Editor: I think this work is interesting, though.
Shuujin: Editors, huh? I sure wish I'd heard more about them like that.
Though he did say that there are good and bad editors, too, so you may not always want to take them on.
Shuujin: ? What do you mean?
You have to admit that editors affect new authors especially, so if you get mixed up with a crappy editor, you'd be better off just drawing on your own without them.
Mangakas can't choose their editors, so whether you get a good editor or not just depends on luck.
Shuujin: So it's about luck there, too...?
So there are good and bad editors?

Page 169:
Saikou: Listen to the urban legends. And what's posted on the Internet.
Shuujin: Ooh, this is getting exciting.
Saikou: There are a editors that almost never pick up their phones in the afternoons, and at night, if they do pick up, they're always hanging around at a cabaret club, and stuff.
Editor: Eh, sensei? I'm afraid I can't hear you.
SFX: Kyahaha
Shuujin: Seriously?
Saikou: I said think of it as an urban legend.
Shuujin: That sucks.
Saikou: That guy at least still came to pick up the manuscripts so he was still all right...
Shuujin: Eh... You mean there are worse ones? Hey, Saikou, is that story inspired by your uncle's experience?
Saikou: Ah, sorry, maybe that's a bad example. If it's disheartening maybe I should stop.
Shuujin: No, I'd like to hear more...
Saikou: Then let me tell you a story I found a bit moving, about an editor.
Shuujin: Ooh.

Page 170:
Saikou: He told a newcomer that had a one-shot published in another magazine "your work has promise, so keep writing full manuscripts and bring them in." And on the tenth time, after the editor finished reading
SFX: TON TON
Saikou: Without saying a word, he put the newcomer's manuscript in a shredder right in front of him.
Shuujin: That's terrible!
SFX: Gagagaga gagagaga
Shuujin: If something like that happened nowadays, they'd get sued. It wouldn't be just about "losing the manuscript", right!
And how could you find that moving?
Saikou: It's all right to be harsh against a newbie, isn't it?
Shuujin: E~~~~~~H?
Saikou: It's because that newcomer was always getting rejected after only having the first few pages of his manuscript read. He was glad to have it read all the way to the end, and he used the frustration of seeing his work shredded as motivation, and proceeded to become a popular author.
Shuujin: Oh, well I guess if you get that far, it's a good story. So the guy didn't let it get to him, he just thought "I'll show that bastard" and worked harder.
SFX: GARI GARI GARI GARI GARI GARI GARI

Page 171:
Saikou: Later, at a meeting for a serialized work, the editor apologized, saying "The work I put in the shredder was interesting, but I thought you would grow more if I didn't praise you there, and did on impulsively."
Editor: I'm sorry for what happened back then.
Guy: Thank you so much.
Saikou: And the author thanked him.
Shuujin: Y... You liaaaaar, that sounds like a story out of a manga!
Saikou: I told you, it was a story I heard from my uncle. So it might be a lie, but
he said that editor became the editor-in-chief.
What I'm trying to say is most editors out there are just as passionate about manga as that.
Shuujin: ...Guess, so... If that wasn't so, I'd be worried. Though I'd be worried about the shredder, too.
Hey, Saikou, you've never met an editor in real life, right?
Saikou: No. As you'd expect, I wasn't allowed in when the editor was coming.
Shuujin: Wanna go meet one?
SFX: BUH

Page 172:
Shuujin: If we call them and say "We'd like to bring something in", we can meet with one, right?
Saikou: Well I'd like to, but we still don't have a manuscript to bring in.
Shuujin: .........
Saikou, if we're gonna get serialized it should be in "Jump", right?
Saikou: Yeah, if our goal is to get an anime, I think "Jump"'s the best.
Shuujin: I think if we're aiming to be number one in Japan, "Jump"'s best, too.
In other words,
if it weren't Shueisha and "Jump", any shitty manuscript would be fine, right?
Let's go bring a bad manuscript like that in to an editor and see what kinda reaction they have.
Saikou: ........................

Page 173:
Shuujin: I'll just think up some random story and you just give it some random pictures.
We could use it to study publishers, or rather, observe editors? .......
............
Saikou: .......
Shuujin: Ah, like I thought, you'd not into it.
I'm a little too curious. And you'd hate to just draw something random, right?
Saikou: No.
SFX: Pata...
Saikou: You really are pretty smart. Let's bring a bad manuscript into "Shounen Three"!
TL Note: Shounen Three isn't a real magazine. It may be a parody of Shounen Sunday, a rival weekly magazine to Jump.
Shuujin: Gyaha
SFX: CHUUUUH (sip)
Shuujin: Well, if we've got that decided, let's go to the work place.
I've already got a few "whatever" kinda stories in my head.
SFX: BAH
Shuujin: Ah, is it this late already? I told my folks I was "going out to get something to eat". It'll be okay if I just phone them.
Saikou: I've had that kind of pattern, too, recently.
But spending 280 on daily round trips like this is tough on my wallet. Maybe I should get a fixed commuter's pass? Or go by bicycle or something......
Shuujin: Hey, there're three beautiful girls up ahead.
Saikou: Eh?

Page 174:
Saikou: Azuki.
Shuujin: I knew she had a little sister in the 5th year of elementary school, but she's really cute, too.
Saikou: Aw, man, what do I do?
Shuujin: This isn't a time for "aw, man". It's your chance to ask her email address, ain't it?
Saikou: Don't be an idiot, she's with that powerful mother of hers.
Shuujin: Would you ask her if it was one on one?
Saikou: Shut up about that.

Page 175:
Saikou: We'll just pass by and pretend we didn't notice them, okay?
Shuujin: You'd notice her normally. There's no way that'll work.
Saikou: Just do it.
Shuujin: Oh, it looks like Azuki noticed, too.
She's clearly blushing, and she's moved behind her mother.
Saikou: I don't need the play-by-play.
SFX: Su...

Page 176:
Miyuki: What's this? Miho, aren't those friends from your class?
Azuki: !
Saikou: !
SFX: PUH...
Mina: Ah, sis, you're blushing.
Azuki: Be quiet, Mina. I just don't want to be seen with my parents.
Shuujin: Wow, you two sure are shy.
I'm surprised you can feign indifference when you're in the same classroom.
Saikou: I said shut up!

Page 177:
Saikou: Heeeew... I knew that mom would just have to say something.
What's with that " What's this?".......
Shuujin: Yeah. I couldn't hold in a laugh.
Saikou: .......................
I worked up my courage and tried turning around.
And by coincidence, Azuki turned around at the same time.
Time stopped and everything around us became transparent.

Page 178:
Box: Saikou: A tenth of a second felt like 10 seconds. Then I turned back and hurried forward.
But I turned back again for 2 or 3 seconds.
And far away, Azuki was facing back, too.
Azuki and my wavelengths matched perfectly.

Page 179:
Shuujin: Wavelengths?
But Azuki turned around 10 times and just 2 of them happened to meet with you.
SFX: Sah sah
Saikou: She did not!
Shuujin: That's awesome. You felt wavelengths... I don't get it, so all I can say is I'm jealous.
Saikou: The first time I saw Azuki was in my sixth year of elementary school.
Shuujin: Yeah.
Saikou: You and I went to Ake elementary, but she went to Akeni elementary.
It was at a swim meet between our schools. When I was on the opposite side of the pool and she was spectating, we gazed at each other the whole time.
And at that time neither of us felt embarrassed.

Page 180:
Sign: School Entrance Ceremony
Saikou: And at the middle school entrance ceremony, our eyes met again in front of the school gate.
Then, we were pretty close to each other, and turned away quickly.
Shuujin: What? You were conscious of each other since elementary school? And, I mean, you liked each other?
Saikou: But it's really only looking back now that I realize it.
Something: *Sah* *Sah*
Shuujin: Well, okay, but no matter how much your wavelengths match, if you don't exchange email addresses you can't call have a conversation.
Course, it's a different matter if you can communicate telepathically, being on the same wavelength.
Saikou: It'll be fine as long as I get her email by graduation. Right now, let's concentrate on manga.
Shuujin: Ah, right. Here, I wrote 5 pages so far.
Saikou: That was fast.
SFX: SAH
Saikou: Title "W (Double) Earths: Futatsu no Chikyuu
Shuujin: The W Earths thing is a joke. Just read it.
TL Note: "Double Earths" may be a pun on "Double Arts", a short lived manga with the same name except for one character. Also, the letter "W" is abbreviated as "double" in Japanese, which is the source of the pun.

Page 181:
Box: The Earth we live on is nothing but a clone of the real Earth.
Top Circle: Real Earth
Bottom Circle: Our Earth
Box: And we humans are nothing but clones of the humans on the real earth.
Yes, we were made by them as materials for experiments.
By being in the same environment, we are left independent and observed by our copies in order to create a better world.
So for the real Earth, researching us has brought an end to war and global warming.
Saikou: Shuujin......
Shuujin: Hm? Sorry, it was getting to be a pain so I did really big panels. I'll be putting tons of meaningless double-page spreads in later, and stuff, too.
Saikou: Did you rip this story off from somewhere?
Shuujin: I didn't, but anyone could come up with something like this, so forgive me if it has something in common with something else... If I'm being honest, story-wise I'm trying my best with this.

Page 182:
Saikou: This isn't something anyone could come up with! At least I couldn't. And there are mangas that rip off the premises of other manga and games that get serialized, too.
Actually, I'm really getting drawn in by this setup.
Shuujin: You're kidding!
Saikou: Seriously.
Shuujin: No, well that's just the setup. I was actually going to have the people from the real Earth fight with these humans...
[The manga page there is the same from the last page]
Saikou: I'm attracted by it because I can picture that happening. You could have fellow humans going into all out battles with each other with this.
Hey... Write this properly, how about we bring it into Jump after all? I'll work hard on it, too, and try to do some decent drawings.
Shuujin: Eh...?
Saikou: Or do you have anything more interesting than this in mind?
Shuujin: Hmmmmmmmmmmm, well I had an idea for a sports story called "Gurasan Pitcher". [The title is written really big.]
TL Note: Gurasan Pitcher = Sunglasses Pitcher
An elementary schooler with a strong fast ball is trying to make it to the pros, but in a little league game he gets hit right in the forehead by a hit shot towards the pitcher, and goes blind.
Ten years later, suddenly an unidentified pitcher wearing sunglasses appears on a pro mound. And with 180 km/hr throws at top, bottom, inside, and outside angles, he pitches a perfect game.

Page 183:
Someone: Next, 38.
Shuujin: Having never given up on his dream of going pro, there's a story of secret special training he did for 10 years with his dad.
Someone: Okay.
Shuujin: The fact that he can't see gets out, and while he's disputing with the baseball association, he battles with rivals trying to hit his shot.
SFX: KUWAH
Shuujin: ..........
Saikou: I knew you had talent, Shuujin!
Normally nobody could come up with that much of a story on that setup! They'd think it would sound stupid and give up! But you took something that seemed stupid at a glance and----
Shuujin: S-Seriously? You really think I have talent!?
I-I'm so glad... Honestly, I've been trying desperately to come up with stories every day...
But even I thought I might've been over confident and wondered if I was really any good...
But now that you've recognized me, I've really got confidence. Thank God... Thank God~~~
Saikou: Shuujin...
On Page: You said you like sports stories, and all.
Saikou: I convinced Shuujin that, with a deadline of the end of summer vacation, to have a proper manuscript done for "Futatsu no Chikyuu" and bring it into Jump.
Shuujin: The ideal page count is 31 to 45 pages, is that okay?
Saikou: It'll probably be okay!
