160th Climb Alder King
Narration: Franz Peter Schubert
"Erlkönig"
OP.1 D.328
Johann Wolfgang von Goeth
TL Note: The Japanese title of this Dutch poem is "Maou" meaning "demon king" which derives from the incorrect English translation "Elf King". Though the correct translation of the title Erlkönig is thought to be "Alder King" which is a type of flowering shrub. You should read the poem if you want this chapter to make sense. Schubert is a singer who sang the lyrics.
[If you didn't figure it out, you're supposed to listen to that while reading this chapter. Here's a link:

Katou: I have with me now, a bivouac sack, a thermos, a jet boiler, 5.5mm rope,
and a small supply of food.
Starting here I'm only bringing essential climbing gear.
I'll switch to a light-weight day pack.
I'll put a tent, a mat, and reserve fuel in my rucksack,
and make a V-thread with a screw, and hook it through a sling and deposit it here----
Page 3:
A hanging glacier. An ice wall starting from 70 to 80 degrees.
I'll go free with double axes. I don't have the spare time for security.
Page 4:
Katou: I'm relatively sure about my footing.
By the degree I can hook my ice axes,
I can gain balance.
Keep my breathing steady.
Climb by relying on the "feet".
Page 5:
Katou: As I expected, I guess I can't see all the way to the top.
I'll just have to trust the map in my head.
Here it comes again.
As I should expect from the wind on an isolated peak, I'm stuck...!!!!
Page 6-7:
[This is where the poem comes into play.]
Page 8:
Katou: No matter how limiting the situation may be,
I'll definitely get home alive-----!!!!

Annapurna
Dhaulagiri
Patagonia
Himilaiyan Peak 29, Manaslu,
Nanga Parbat...
I've been called the climber
that's come closer to death than any other.

Someone: We have
a path for both of us to keep moving on. And because we're together.
even in the battles we have alone,
we've been able to stand and face them without fear----

Oh, no...!!!

[The Alder King and his daughters.]
Page 14:
[Do you want to come with me, pretty boy? My daughters shall wait on you finely; My daughters will lead the nightly dance, And rock and dance and sing you to sleep.]
Page 15:
Katou: Maybe...
Page 16:
That father
wasn't riding the horse to protect his child,
but perhaps it was because
the thrill of being chased by the Alder King
gave him joy.

[Nyaaaw...]

[The son dies at the end.]

Katou: Can I really forsake everything------...?
